Handsome fighters never lose a battle!
~ Vega

Vega (also known as Balrog in the Japanese version) is one of the "Four Heavenly Kings" of Shadaloo and an antagonist in the Street Fighter series, initially appearing as a major antagonist in Street Fighter II.

In the Japanese version, he has been voiced by Shō Hayami, the late Kaneto Shiozawa, Yūji Ueda, Kazuyuki Ishikawa, Nobuyuki Hiyama, Chihara Junior, and by Junichi Suwabe in all appearances since Street Fighter IV.

In the English version, he has been voiced by Richard Cansino in Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie and Street Fighter II Vs Animaze dub, Vic Mignogna in the ADV dub of Street Fighter II V, Paul_Dobson in the cartoon (who also voiced Doctor Doom and Shuma-Gorath since Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds), and Doug Ergoltz in all appearances since Street Fighter IV.

Biography[]

Past[]

Vega is a Spanish nobleman born to a beautiful mother. However, the status of his family had dwindled and his mother was forced to remarry for financial security. As he grew up, Vega began showing an interest in bullfighting, which was a national sport and a cultural tradition. After becoming a skilled matador (bullfighter), he traveled to Japan to learn ninjutsu, a fighting style which he believed mixed well with his natural grace and speed.

Before long, he joined an underground fighting circuit, and quickly became a renowned fighter. But tragedy struck when Vega's hideous stepfather murdered his wife, believing that she did not respect him. This event took place before Vega's eyes, causing him to snap from the trauma. From that minute, Good and Beautiful (the qualities he saw in his mother) would be mutually inclusive terms in his mind, as would ugliness with evil, what his cruel stepfather represented. He stabbed his stepfather with his claw through his chest, killing him and lived a dual life: an honorable nobleman by day, a sadistic murderer by night.

Street Fighter Alpha 3[]

Vega oversaw the assassination operations for Shadaloo, and was associated with Cammy and the Shadaloo assassins known as the Dolls. When Cammy rebelled, however, Vega was assigned to capture her and, although he failed in that mission, she stepped up and defeated M. Bison, freeing herself and the other Dolls from his brainwashing. When the effort to undo the brainwashing (as well as a deadman trigger in the brainwashing that was supposed to kill them if they betrayed Bison) caused Cammy and the other Dolls to collapse, Vega rescued them from the burning Shadaloo base because he didn't believe somebody as beautiful as them should have died.

Street Fighter II[]

Vega is one of the four bosses of the first Street Fighter II, and he later became a playable character in its Champion Edition.

Street Fighter IV[]

Vega makes a brief appearance towards the end, when he's seen with Balrog on a Shadaloo helicopter. As a badly injured Seth drags himself aboard, he delivers a message from Bison, telling him that while he "put on a fantastic show", S.I.N.'s success has only come about through the manipulation of Shadaloo working behind the scenes to ensure their good fortune.

Street Fighter V[]

Vega keeps an eye on the Dolls and thinks F.A.N.G is foolish for making them follow Shadaloo's orders so faithfully.

In New York, F.A.N.G, Balrog, and Vega bicker over the successes and failures of Operation C.H.A.I.N.S. When Bison shows up to report on the "other device," F.A.N.G brings two Shadaloo soldiers to test against Balrog and Vega. After defeating the soldiers, the two kings threaten F.A.N.G. Chun-Li and Guile show up and watch the carnage, before finally seeing Bison. Chun-Li confronts them, despite Guile's efforts to stop her. Bison steps forward and confronts her himself, stating that she was foolish to come. With a blast of Psycho Power, Bison knocks Chun-Li to the ground. Guile rushes to her aid, but is intercepted by Vega who challenges him.

Later in Brazil, Vega watches as the now fugitive Cammy runs away with Juri and Decapre, obsessed with his mission to subdue Cammy. Vega continues to stalk the trio until they arrive in London, where he springs into action and attacks Cammy. After easily defeating the former Doll, Vega approaches the unconscious Cammy to admire her beauty, taking one of her braids. However, before he gets the chance, he is interrupted by Juri who claims that Cammy was hers because she took it first.

As Juri holds Vega off, Cammy regains consciousness. When she sees Vega standing over Decapre, she quickly removes his mask, forcing him to retreat. As Cammy defends the unconscious Decapre, Vega chuckles and retreats.

Vega is later seen during the Street Fighters' assault on the Shadaloo Base of Operations, where he once again encounters Cammy, who had just defeated the brainwashed Juri. After dodging his slash, Cammy gets into position as Vega taunts her. Cammy tries to attack him with a Spiral Arrow. He dodges her attack and continues the battle. Although Vega emerges victorious once again, before he can finish her off, Decapre appears and saves Cammy. After the other Dolls are freed from their brainwashing, Vega exits.

Other Media[]

Street Fighter X Tekken[]

Vega appears in Street Fighter X Tekken as Balrog's canonical partner, both rivaling each other to own the Pandora's Box.

Super Smash Bros.[]

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Vega appears as a primary attack type spirit that lowers the fighter's weight when equipped. His spirit battle is a stamina battle against Meta Knight on the Ω form of Arena Ferox where all fighters have reduced jump power, despite the enemy loving to jump.

Movies[]

Vega served as a major antagonist in both the 1994 live action Street Fighter movie (as the right hand man of Sagat and primary foe of Ryu) and Street Fighter II : The Animated Movie. He also appeared as a supporting antagonist and arch-rival of Ken Masters in Street Fighter II V .

Personality[]

The heart and soul are meaningless to me. I believe only in beauty.
~ Vega

Vega is a headstrong, manipulative, and uncompromising narcissist. He thinks he is the most beautiful man in the world. He hates anything ugly, and will kill anyone he deems "imperfect" without hesitation. Due to the nature of the tragedy of his childhood, he finds it incomprehensible that a beautiful person could be evil or that an ugly person could ever be good. He is also notably sadistic, traitorous, vituperative, and psychotic, so he loves to torture his victims and the sight of blood. Therefore, he tends to prolong his fights, just for the mere pleasure of watching his enemies suffer. Furthermore, he usually lacks any honor as he is willing to use dirty tactics to win despite his attempts at being affable.

His narcissism drives him to wear a mask over his face in combat. Not to hide his identity, but to protect his "perfect" face from any scarring or bruising. He is a very formal and authoritative person and enjoys classical music, particularly orchestrated strings and Spanish guitar. Therefore, in addition to judging people by their looks, he often lacks respect towards those who don't have a fine taste in culture.

Abilities[]

Come, now dance!
~ Vega to Cammy
  • Master Martial Artist: Vega is a highly skilled fighter. His fighting style is a self made hybrid martial art called "Spanish Ninjutsu" which combines Spanish bullfighting with Japanese Ninjitsu (Taijutsu in-particular). He able to fight highly skilled opponents such as Chun-Li, Cammy, Juri-Han, Ken Masters, Guile, E. Honda, Balrog, and F.A.N.G. His skills have allowed him to enter the second and third World Warrior Tournament, reaching an advanced position.
    • Claw Mastery: Vega is highly skilled in using his claw in combat. He uses it to quickly wound an opponent, giving himself an advantage in a fight. He is skilled enough to slice a motorcycle into pieces while in mid-air. He can even throw his claw to use as an improvised projectile.
  • Master Acrobat: Vega is well known for his nimble and agile maneuvers in combat, even climbing on the cage walls of his area. He is able to casually leap off walls, vertical leap dozens of meters in the air with ease, support his own body weight while hanging from a chandelier by his feet.
  • Expert Tactician: Despite being just an enforcer for Shadloo, Vega is a skilled strategic planner. He is very adept at using the environment to his advantage such as climbing the the chain link fences of his arena or hanging from a chandelier. He once planted an explosive before hand to cut the lights and make his escape. He could hide from agencies such as the Interpol on his own, somehow faking his death, and kept living a comfortable life.
  • Stealth: Due to his Ninjitsu training, Vega is Shadoloo's top assassin and infiltrator.
  • Expert Bullfighter: Vega is highly adept at bullfighting in his civilian life, which he incorporates into his fighting style.
  • Piloting Skills: Vega is capable of effectively piloting a helicopter.

Equipment[]

  • Mask: Vega wears a white mask with a purple symbol on the left cheek which he wears not to hide his identity as one would naturally assume, but rather to protect his face while in a fight. Some versions have the mask be metallic which adds to its protective nature.
  • Claw: Vega uses a three bladed claw on his left hand to gain a lethal edge over his opponents. It appears to be a modified version of the real life ninja weapon called the "Tekko Kagi" (Back of the hand hooks) which fits perfectly into Vega's Ninjitsu training.
