Velagunder is a boss from the Ys series and a minor antagonist in the 1989-1993 anime adapted from it.
Appearance[]
In Ys II, Velagunder is a massive red mouthless cycloptic demon with clawed hands and two eyes on each shoulder in most versions of Ys II.
In Ys Origin, it has a considerably different look where it has tentacles around its eye, holes across the sides of each arm, a mouth on its bottom half with two eyes, and four insect like legs. It also walks with its arms on the ground akin to a gorilla.
When it first appears in the Ys anime, Velagunder wears a white robe with a hood, gloves, and a scarf that covers its mouth, leaving only its red eye visible.
When it sheds its outer robes, the demon has blood-red skin, a single eye, and a tree stump-like lower half, which is similar to its vg incarnation, save for it having a mouth.
Powers and Skills[]
In Ys II it fires light blue projectiles from its eyes.
In Ys Origin, it can fire toxic bubbles from its mouth, fire a laser from its eye, draw enemies towards its mouth, throw punches with inflamed fists, and use its arms to sprint around the arena. However, if it gets stunned, the player's character can scale its arms and attack its weak point.
It can also spawn small pillbug like creatures.
In the ova when it assumes a humanoid guise, Velagunder is capable of riding horses and will use a sword to fight those who oppose it.
In its true form, it can launch fireballs.
Games[]
Ys Origin[]
Prior to the events of the game, Velagunder was one of the six massive demons that were controlled to attack Ys as a result of Dalles's and Cain Fact's mechinations, claiming the lives of half the population in one night, forcing the survivors to retreat into Solomon Shrine and rise the mountain it was on into the sky.
Later on the creature was encountered on its chamber of Darm Tower where the protagonist of the chosen route finds themselves having to kill the creature in battle before proceeding further into the tower. In Toal's route, when he kills the fiend, Epona explains to Toal that Zava was fond of creatures like Velagunder, but Toal tells her that she has to deal with this.
Ys II: The Final Chapter[]
Prior to the events of the game, Velagunder has been terrozing the Rasteenie Mine and claimed lives for six months after Darm was unleashed. Adol investigates and finds himself having to use fire magic to fight the demon in order to slay it.
Anime[]
Velagunder arrives in the village of Rance with several others to seek out the new sacrifice of the day when it nearly picks out a young child only for Lillia to intervene and take the child's place as the sacrifice.
Sada was opposed to this, but he was held back as the monsters could attack the town if they intervene. As the demon is carrying Lillia to be sacrificed at ruins on a mountain, a reformed Dark Fact shows Adol a vision of the demon taking her there.
At the ruins, Lillia is placed on a column as the demon plans to sacrifice her. She pleads that there must be no more sacrifices, but the demon does not comply with this as it craves for its race to be more powerful.
Just then Adol arrives and cuts through the monsters, prompting the demon to draw its sword out of anger at Adol's defience of the demons. They proceed to cross swords as Adol proclaims that the people will not need to obey it. In the end, Adol breaks the demon's sword and cuts it down. The demon is in disbelief that it was not invincible before it seemingly expires.
Lillia warns Adol that the demons will soon choose another sacrifice, Adol counters that he will put a stop to this. However, the robed demon survived its wounds and tears off its robes to reveal its true form, a blood-red monster with only one eye and a tree stump-like lower half.
As it lashes out at Adol, it launches a fireball from its mouth, but Adol avoided it and rushes to save Lillia as the colomn collapes. The demon asks Lillia why she protects Adol who asks her to run. The power of the priests enables Adol to use magic against the demon, much to its shock.
Adol tells Lillia to get down as he dispatches Velagunder with a fireball, the dying demon asked why Lillia sided with the humans as she should have been with them.
