Velasco is a major antagonist in the video game Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below. The only surviving member of the Children of Night and the man responsible for the brainwashing of all monsters across the Kingdom of Arba, he desires to reawaken the Dark Dragon Shadroth to plunge the world into darkness. A complete fanatic that cares about no one, he is willing to do anything to achieve his goals.

Personality[]

Velasco is single-minded, being completely determined to complete the world in darkness. While he claimed it to bring balance to light and dark, it is nothing but him being a hypocrite, as his hate towards light hatred is as unhealthy as his obsession for darkness. As such, Velasco as wiped out both the Children of Light and the Children of Night, the former being done out of spite and to destroy the Pinnacle of Light while the latter was done to take the Circle of Night for himself.

Velasco is a cunning individual, possessing one of the Children of Light to enter the Shrine of Scales and faking redemption to buy time. He is also quite ruthless, being completely willing to drain the life force from numerous universes for his own benefit. Despite being nothing but a mere human, Velasco is still as much of a threat as with the other villains from other Dragon Quest games.

Appearance[]

Velasco is an older-looking man with purple skin, red eyes, and white hair. Fitting of his formal facade, he has a very neat sense of style, slicking his white hair back while having sideburns and a pencil mustache run across his face. For clothing, Velasco wears a black, one-piece outfit with strips of leather across his waist and a hood attachment, a dark brown chestpiece adorned with golden images of serpents and a singular eye over these robes, matching vambraces, a purple, wing-like cape attached with two tuffs of feathers to his shoulders, and gray boots. He also wields a staff adorned with a snake's head, with red gems embedded where its eyes would be.

Biography[]

Velasco is a powerful sorcerer hailing from the Children of Night, the worshippers of the draconic deity Shadroth. However, he is far more obsessed with darkness and Shadroth compared to other members of his tribe, leading to them killing the other members of his tribe to take the Circle of Night.

After this, Velasco made his way to the Isle of Fault, the island that is directly above Shadroth's prison. Gathering the immense dark energy from the land, he spent years creating a dark spell to drain the life force from other universes, using them as an energy source to awaken his god. A few years before the events of the game, Velasco caught wind of where the Children of Light lived. Knowing that their bloodline were the only people that could stop him, Velasco slaughtered the tribe (barring two infants he missed) before burning their village to the ground.

Once Velasco's dark spell was complete, the mage cast it on the land of Arba, causing monsters to become hostile. Together with his monster-summoning Nightmaws, Velasco used his newfound army to attack various cities, especially those with the roots of Yggdrasil, in order to weaken the world tree. Seeing the carnage Velasco was causing, the avian deity Empyrea summoned heroes from various worlds, hoping to raise a team of heroes to thwart the sorcerer's schemes.

At some point, Velasco headed to the desert town of Colissea, where he met the swordsman Terry in an arena. Sensing Velasco's evil nature, Terry fought the mage in a duel. As the battle ranged on, however, the Arban Army eventually charged into the battleground, hoping to stop Velasco. Upon seeing the two two captains of the army, Luceus and Aurora, Velasco cast a Zam spell in an attempt to fell them. However, this blast of dark magic had no effect on the heroes, their heritage revealed to Velasco in full. Knowing that any attack made on the Children of Light would be fruitless, Velasco summoned three Killing Machines to fend the heroes off as before fleeing the scene.

After this, Velasco is next seen leading an army to destroy the heart of Yggdrasil, also known as the Crown. Upon encountering the heroes once more, he told them about the partial tale of Shadroth being sealed away before capturing the Children of Light with a dark spell. However, one of them used their last bit of strength to save their comrade, allowing themselves to be captured by Velasco.

Later, Velasco followed the heroes to the Pinnacle of Light. Despite failing to stop them from talking with the goddess that sealed Shadroth away, the sorcerer controlled Bjørn the Behemoose into destroying the tower, the heroes barely managing to escape before its collapse. After this, Velasco followed the heroes to the Shrines of Scales, where he turned the other Children of Light into a Darkling in order to defeat the heroes. However, since his transformed minion ended up getting the true power of light, the hero managed to free themselves from Velasco's spell.

After being followed once again into the Crown, Velasco summoned a Barbatos to challenge the protagonists. However, the monster quickly falls to his foes' teamwork, and without any defenses against them, Luceus and Aurora managed to heal Yggdrasil using its dew. Despite this victory, the previous weakening of the World Tree was enough for Shadroth to awaken. With the dragon unleashed, Velasco challenged the heroes to meet him at the Isle of Fault before heading back to his base.

At the dark island, Velasco confronted the heroes for the final time, in which he showed them his dark spell before engaging them in combat. However, after a long-fought battle, the heroes ended up victorious. With his staff shattered by Luceus and Aurora, Velasco feigned redemption, claiming to be filled with light before pretending to commit suicide. However, this was merely to waste the heroes' chance in escaping from the rapidly deteriorating island. Velasco then separated his platform away from the heroes, laughing maniacally as he tossed himself into the lava below.

Despite of his demise, Velasco had one last trick up his sleeves in the form of a King Hydra, wanting to make sure the heroes will perish along with the Isle of Fault. Luckily, they were saved by Empyrea, who flew the heroes back to Alba in order to get ready to face Shadroth once and for all.
