Which isn’t okay, family or not. |

~ Veneer redeeming himself as he stands up to his sister for her abuse towards him and confesses their crimes to the people of Mount Rageous. |
Veneer is the secondary antagonist of DreamWorks' 45th full-length animated feature film, Trolls Band Together, the third installment in the Trolls franchise.
He is Velvet's younger twin brother, and he and Velvet are from Mount Rageous who faked their fame and talents to become famous. However, Veneer is more sensible than his sister and secretly didn't want to be famous but keeps pretending to support her while trying to convince her to be more understanding.
He was voiced by Broadway veteran Andrew Rannells, who also voiced eNeMeE in the English dub of Kirby: Right Back at Ya! and Decoe in Sonic X
Personality[]
The film’s director stated in an interview that both Velvet and Veneer are in essence "90s Pop Divas", implying that Veneer is very into music and out-dated references.
On the outset to maintain a public image, he tends to put up a more smug and arrogant front when accompanying Velvet publicly, and imitates her terrible behaviors on trying to look good by being a jerk. Compared to Velvet, he is not too smart, and gets caught off guard more easily. He, befitting his namesake, is more of a follower who follows Velvet's orders. He is also the more clumsy one, unlike his more apt sister. But he can be sassy when voicing his reasons.
Despite being in the role of an antagonistic character, he would later reveal that when not being with Velvet, he demonstrates a softer, but still weak-willed and cowardly side. He dislikes taking part in Floyd's torture and abduction but due to being constantly compromised with money and fame and feeling he needs to stand by his sister, he feels like he has no control over his own decisions and is long numbed to Velvet's abuse towards him in hopes of being loved by her.
It's later discovered by Floyd that Veneer isn't an evil person, but more of a shy, emotionally sensitive, misguided, and mentally broken individual who had lost sight of who he really was: a nice and honest individual. He is not without his merits, which is his loyalty and care to those he truly loves, but he is loyal to a fault to those who exploit his care for them. He's terrible with lying and doesn't like keeping dishonest secrets, and yet his people-pleasing tendencies are a direct result of Velvet's nonstop abuse.
Owing to Velvet's successful lies, Veneer is unable to speak for himself, and goes along with her decisions due to his over-dependency on her, wanting her to give him affection. This subsequently results in him being a lonely, confused and miserable kid, who doesn't know how to speak for himself or have decision making skills in order to befit with his sister's desires on manipulating him into becoming the person she wants from him, as well as society's expectations in pursuit of being loved and acknowledged. This extends to how he has almost no functional or healthy relationships before meeting Floyd.
Thanks to Floyd's persuasion, however, Veneer is eventually able to stand up for himself by confessing his and his sister's crimes. By coming clean with himself and accepting the consequences, Veneer is finally able to find happiness by having Floyd as his first friend and have a better future with dignity. Though while he's still punished alongside his sister regardless, he happily accepts and goes through with his arrest without complaining. This further shows how much more responsible and kind he's become, as he willing faces up to the consequences of prison for their crimes, despite the long journey for him to slowly recover from Velvet's abuse and manipulation.
Appearance[]
Veneer, similar to Velvet, is a spindly, attractive, pearly-white-skinned humanoid giant, resembling a doll. He has short green hair that is styled into a long quiff, green eyebrows, deep-blue eyes, a lavender-pink oval-shaped spot on each of his cheeks, and wears makeup consisting of grayish-cyan eyeshadow and green lipstick.
For attire, Veneer and his sister wore matching outfits; a bronze, V-neck crop-top with spiked shoulder pads, followed by a set of matching short-shorts. His accessories includes a choker, bracelets on both his wrists, and high-heeled platform boots; all of them made out of indigo-blue-colored crystals. He completes the look with a small, simple, bronze hoop-earring on his right ear.
Biography[]
Backstory[]
Velvet and Veneer were raised by dentists who were also their parents when they were younger. While Velvet felt she deserved better and more, she frequently threw tantrums over not getting what she believed she deserved, whereas Veneer didn't mind or care how they lived. However, due to implied to be the less loved child, he was bullied and later abused by Velvet throughout his whole life, and he eventually gave up resisting Velvet's tyranny towards him.
Floyd was imprisoned in a diamond bottle by the twins before the events of the movie, and the only family that could free him from this prison would be the ideal one. As they became well-known, they recruited Crimp, their assistant.
Trolls Band Together[]
After using Floyd’s talent, Velvet and Veneer because famous and widely known around Mount Rageous. Trivia[]
- Veneer is the third Trolls antagonistic character to redeem themselves since Queen Barb and the Rock Trolls, and the Bergens.
- He is also the first one to be solo redeemed, and also responsibly accepting his punishment.
- Veneer and Velvet's relationship is an ironic juxtaposition to the Trolls. While the Trolls help their siblings with love and care despite their previous separations to lift one another up in the end, Veneer gets metaphorically and literally dragged down by his sister.
- Despite Veneer being unable to sing, his voice actor, Andrew Rannells, is ironically a talented singer.
- There are hints that foreshadow his redemption:
- He is often mistreated by his older twin sister Velvet, making him feel with much misery.
- He seems uneasy about hurting Floyd.
- He had second thoughts about his fraudulent fame after Floyd convinces him to stand up to his sister.
- Velvet and Veneer are nods to fake-celebrities. This happened from time to time in the 80s and 90s, wherein people with talent were deemed not good enough to promote, so their talent was used, while someone else much more marketable was taught how to pretend, with the most famous example of this being Milli Vanilli.
- He used to own a pet goldfish named Sparkles as a child (which would later be flushed down the toilet by Velvet some point during his life).
- Veneer and Velvet are the only Mount Rageons to be confirmed to have parents. However, both parents remain mentioned and are left unseen.
