“ | I'm Venna, but... You can call me "Mom". | „ |
~ Venna, introducing herself to Ryo after she ended up adopting him as a mother. |
“ | No one is safe traveling in the woods. Not as long as she is here. They are all doomed the moment they set foot into the forest. I've set up signs to warn them. I don't know if she knows I'm the one who's doing it. Even with warnings, it’s still too late for some of them. I at least find solace in believing their ghosts will haunt her forever. | „ |
~ One of Ingram's notes about his view on Venna and her potential victims. |
“ | Ryo: Hey, you're back! I haven't seen you in a while. Ingram: I know what you're looking for, kid. You want something subversive, right? Everyone talks about an evil witch in the woods, so you wanted to befriend her and prove them wrong, right? And then it turns out that it’s all one big misunderstanding! She was a good witch after all! Or maybe she was bad, and it just took the kindness of someone else to make her better. That's what all the storybooks teach you, right? Tough luck, kid. It doesn't work like that in the real world. Sometimes people are just evil and there's no helping it. And all the second chances in the world won't make a difference. Ryo: You keep saying this kind of stuff... But I don't understand. Ever since I met her, she's been nice to me. She helped me get back home, she cooks me dinner, she teaches me stuff. Ingram: And what do you do for her in return? Ryo: Huh? Ingram: No good favor goes unreturned. She's going to make you pay her back for those favors one way or another. And I don't think you'll be ready for when that happens. |

~ Ingram, Venna's previous son, in his crow form attempting to warn Ryo for the last time regarding Venna's true nature. |
Venna is the main antagonist of the 2021 indie horror RPG Crowscare. Essentially a seemingly evil humanoid crow-witch rumored by other people that lives in the woods near the farm where the main protagonist, Ryo the Scarecrow, and his father (Rune) lives, Venna then becomes an adoptive mother towards Ryo after he thanked her for helping him find his way home the other night. With her knowing the fact that Ryo doesn't have a mother as he was created by his father from stack of hay, which would turn him into a normal boy with his magic during the day and the fact that Venna's son, Ingram, was seemingly left her home all by himself, which resulted in Venna having "Empty Nest Syndrome".
Despite her motherly and friendly nature towards Ryo as she ended up nurturing him like a proper child, it was all revealed that she did all of this to manipulate and use Ryo, thanks to his naivety, in order to fulfill her own agenda. In addition, she is also revealed to be a serial killer who had killed many innocent people (thus making Venna the reason why numerous people went missing) in the woods so that she could make a secret potion to further her own agenda. It would also be revealed that she was also a severely abusive mother towards Ingram, even having turned her own biological son into a crow after he refused to obey to her.
Appearance[]
Venna appears as a beautiful, elegance yet refined woman around her late-20s until mid-30s. Her elegant appearance can be reflected from her fashion as she wears a rather formal yet monochromatic fashion, with her having a large black hair and her arms having grey bandages ending in black fingernails. Venna herself wears a large, matching elegant matching grey-ish black dress with a purple satin that decorated the bottom part of her dress, a dark brown band around the waist and several furs that decorated the upper part of the dress and a purple gem that lies in the upper center part of the dress near her bosom. In addition, she also wears a similarly black, bird-like masquerade mask with purple eyes and eyelashes.
When she went angry and turns herself into monstrous form, reflecting her true personality and nature as an evil monster beneath her motherly façade, she only appears as a scary silhouette that almost resembles a harpy during one of the bad endings, "The Sun Won't Come Out Tomorrow" yet when she appears as her monstrous form during the true and the good ending of the game, "A Smile To Match My Own", she still retains her original look albeit she has grow sharper teeth and it is shown that she also gained a huge black wings, showing the possible message that something that appear beautiful may as well can backstab you in the long run as her appearance in the true ending mixes her beauty with her rather monstrous personality.
Personality[]
“ | You should go back home. The witch they talk about... She ain't no joke. | „ |
~ Ingram, in his crow form, warning Ryo for the first time about going to the forest. |
At first glance, several people throws some rumor about Venna being an evil witch that lived in the woods where she had done several sinister things including Ryo's father who believes in the rumor as he forbids Ryo to go to the forest. However, when she first appears in the game, Venna appears to be a friendly witch that seemingly matches with her very beautiful and elegant appearance. This was shown where she decided to help Ryo during their first encounter and how she ended up becoming an adoptive mother just for him after seeing Ryo saying that he has no mother. This is due to the fact that her biological son, Ingram, seemingly left her for reasons unknown which left her with an "Empty Nest Syndrome".
As she becomes a biological mother to Ryo, she then nurtures him like a child she owns such as giving him several foods such as fruits and vegetables despite he is a scarecrow, letting him to stay at her house during the rainstorm and even teaches him to brew some potions. Her relationship almost serves as a parallel towards Ryo's relationship with his father as they are both nurturing and coddling Ryo in a very familial manner. This resulted in Ryo forming a bond with Venna and thinking that she is a nice and misunderstood witch that was treated like an outcast by a townsfolk thanks to the scarecrows that they put outside their homes and stores which could potentially made Venna fell ill and nauseous. Because of this, Ryo decided on wanting to help her in some way by convincing the townspeople to take down the scarecrows so that they could meet his adoptive mother who was nice to him. However, in the end, her nurturing, polite and friendly nature towards Ryo were revealed to be nothing but a sham.
However, as much as Ryo desperately wanted to believe there is a good-natured personality beneath her and how she was a misunderstood witch or despite her evilness, she can be a redeemed person as time went by, she is still a vile, psychopathic woman at her core. The real reason why she becomes nice to the point she nurtured Ryo like a child she never had before is because of the fact that she did this for pragmatic reason as she attempts to exploit Ryo's naivety under the pretense that he could repay her in return, by using him to further her own agenda as she gave him a vial with a strange liquid towards him so that he could pour it towards the statue of Luciana that holds a chalice during the Harvest Festival. It was then revealed that she plans to turn the world into her personal cattle where humans and possibly scarecrow act as a food so that she and her friends could celebrate a feast as she becomes the queen of this world and Ryo becoming her prince and does seemingly praises Ryo for helping her to accomplish her plans. However, when Ryo decided to disobeyed her, she has no hesitations to turn into a monstrous form, befitting with her true, monstrous nature that was buried beneath her beauty, and then attempts to kill Ryo by crippling his legs first, viewing Ryo as nothing but an expendable pawn.
It was also revealed that she is also a serial killer during her spare time, as shown when she has no hesitations to murder several humans who bypass through the woods and use their bones as an ingredient to make a potion to further her own plans. She is also revealed herself to be abusive as well as her son, Ingram, can attest to. This was shown during the journal where Ingram was locked in the closet for no reason other than made her angry for looking her the wrong way or confiscated all of the books that Ingram borrowed from the library and threatened to burn it if he reads it again. Ingram's opinion on his mom is extremely low and never look back when he discovered her plans to turn the world into her personal cattle where humans were turned into food or at the very least, her playthings. This resulted in him trying to run away and warned the townspeople. However, Ingram was turned into a little crow in the end, unable to go back unless he drinks a blood of a family member in which he knows it to be a futile attempt as her mother will crush him either way. As a result, he was unable to fight back and tried to warn several people by putting several signs in the woods even if it's futile as Venna will kill them anyways.
Despite the hell that she put Ingram through to the point that his opinion has gone rock bottom and seeing that there is nothing salvageable about her mother's rotten personality, Venna still claims that she still loved her child as a parent and according to her, a parent's job is to make her child happy. However, this is rather questionable at best, considering at the same time, she has no hesitations to abuse or even using intimidation tactics to get Ingram to kowtow towards her demands by turning him into a crow or locking him in a storage and also try to ripped Ingram's mouth out as a form of punishment. In addition, her motherly relationship was revealed to be a facade so that she could keep Ryo under her thumb and only praises him if he accomplish her own plans. Some players may argue that in a way, she does missed Ingram and the lack of company does make her sad to a certain degree before Ryo came in to the point she ended up getting plagued by an Empty Nest Syndrome. However, in the end, it was all just a facade that she put because of the fact that Ingram disobeyed her several times and tries to use Ryo's naivety by covering up what happened so that she could get what she wants.
Her relationship with Ingram itself can be considered a parallel or at the very least, served as a foil towards Ryo's relationship with his father where his father genuinely cares about him dearly to the point he will do anything to keep his son safe such as turning the world into darkness whereras Venna never gave Ingram any love and repeatedly abuses him on daily basis when he went against her wishes despite claiming to love him and wanted to see him happy as it got to the point where Ingram rebels against her after finding out her rotten plans that involved his real loved ones.
Perhaps her only positive trait was her high intelligence. This was shown where she is able to see the lie that Ryo spewed towards her during the True Ending as she intentionally broke the vial she had given to him which causes her to attempt to kill Ryo. In addition, she also uses her intelligence in order to manipulate Ryo by acting as a nurturing and doting mother towards him so that she could use the opportunity to take advantage of Ryo's naivety so that she could help her.
Biography[]
Not much is known about Venna's past. However, she was rumored to be an evil witch by the townspeople that preys on children to the point that Ryo's father warned him to not go to the forest. This turned out to be true as Venna had an ambitious plan: Turning the entire world as her personal cattle as she harvests the entire humanity so that she and her friends can have a feast on while she becomes the Queen of the World as she ruled it in perpetual darkness. To that end, she attempts to create potion made of human body parts such as 2678 bones and also their blood and as a result, she has no hesitations to murder anyone who got lost in the woods to further her own agenda.
In addition, she also has a son named Ingram whom she constantly abuses physically or mentally which causes their relationships to get strained despite trying to help her by either locking him in the closet for looking at her the wrong way or confiscating all of the books he had borrowed from the library due to her possibly being envious towards Ingram's relationship with the librarian, Ms. B, that acts like a true mother towards Ingram compared to her after Ms. B praises his efforts on honing his writing skills and become one of her best students.
Eventually, Ingram's perception towards his mother turned from strained into a pure hatred decides to rebel against his mother after seeing her mother's despicable plan which would turn Ingram's loved ones into a meat or at the very least, a plaything that will be harvested by his mother. As a result, he then attempts to warn the townspeople about her mother's appalling behavior to no avail because her mother caught him red handed and then turned him into a little crow, unable to go back until he drinks the blood of his family member, which is his mother, knowing the consequences that he would receive when trying to do so as Venna will crush him like a bug.
This in turn, resulted Ingram trying to seek vengeance against his mother by trying his best to warn other people that travel through the forest by putting several wooden signs without Venna noticing. However, his efforts prove to be futile at best as most of them that wander through the forest will be killed by Venna anyways. Despite this, Ingram just tried to find a solace that the spirits of his mother's victims that were unable to move on will haunt her in her home. Eventually, Ingram decides to hang around in the farm nearby the forest where the protagonist, Ryo, and his legless wizard father lives. Aware of the boy's naivety, Ingram then decides to warn Ryo about what will happened in the Harvest Festival and also warned him to stay out of the forest.
Before the Harvest Festival commence for few more days, Ryo decided to help his father with several chores including helping the people in the library by decorating its windowsills. When meeting with his friends in the town square, he then sees some of his friends hanging around with their respective mothers. Coming back home after seeing his friends with their mothers, Ryo then asks his father about his mother in which the latter responded that he doesn't have one as Ryo is revealed to be a scarecrow that was resurrected by his magic in which Ryo doesn't believe at first.
Despite this, Ryo's relationship with his father remain intact and when asked if he need to do another chore, his father initially wanted Ryo to pick mushrooms to make a potion that can be only found in the forest but ended up declining his request as he could take the mushroom for himself using his own magic that was saved for the Harvest Festival and also the rumors of evil witch that lives there. Deciding to ignore his father's warnings, Ryo then goes out to the forest alone at night to find the mushrooms so that he could help his father which causes him to change his form from a regular boy into scarecrow much to his surprise and when he meets with Ingram again in the forest, the latter then scolds Ryo for his stupidity and advises him to go back home. Despite this, Ryo still adamantly tries to pick the mushrooms and promises Ingram that he will get it quickly. While traveling through the forest, he found several belongings of other people lied on the forest path such as backpack and shirt that were torn apart by an unknown force.
However, after he got the mushrooms and tries to go home, the tree stump suddenly sunk into the chasm below, resulting on Ryo unable to go back home. Despite this, Venna appears in front of him and despite Ryo is scared with her at first because he doesn't want to be eaten, Venna decided to help him by building a bridge so that he could go home. During the morning, Ryo then performs his regular chores until he meet Ingram again in which Ryo tells him about his experience with the witch. However, Ingram then bluntly tells Ryo that the reason his mother spares him is because he doesn't have anything she needed as he was made of straw and fabric. When Ryo attempts to ask about the witch that his father mentioned the other day towards his father, the latter then tells Ryo that the witch is unable to get near the farm or the town itself due to the fact there are so many scarecrows that prevent her from coming close as she was revealed to be a crow too.
Despite what Ingram and his father has said about the witch, Ryo then decides to go to the forest again to meet with Venna, trying to thank her for helping him going back home despite Ingram's warnings on not going to the forest again in which Ryo ignored. Meeting with Venna again as she tends her pumpkins outside her house, she was startled on seeing Ryo manage to get to her house and ask him how did he get here. Ryo then answers that he managed to find her house thanks to the signs that warned him. Knowing this, she was amused by it as Ryo decided to give her some flowers much to her gratitude.
When she asks Ryo about his parents knew that he was at her house, Ryo then responded by saying that he would get into trouble by his father if he went to her house and also tell her that she doesn't have a mother. Seeing the fact that Ryo doesn't have a mother and how naïve he was, Venna then decided to use this opportunity by trying to adopt Ryo and become his adoptive mother in order to further her own plans to make the world into her personal cattle without him noticing while also claiming that the reason she did this was that she had a biological son before that seemingly left her and as a result, she developed an "Empty Nest" syndrome. Ryo then decided to accept her offer and as a result, the two form a strong bond together with her teaching Ryo new stuffs such as crafting potions, letting him reading several books in the library or feed him dinner.
As they form their bond together, at one point, Ryo then asks Venna if his existence hurts him because he was a scarecrow and there are so many scarecrows to keep her away. Venna then answers Ryo by saying that she could handle him but at the same time, couldn’t handle too many of them because it would make her sick and make her collapse. Despite Ryo wanting to introduce her to everybody in town, Venna prefers not to go there because she knows that she is unwanted there which resulted in him planning to convince the people to took down the scarecrow so that he could showcase that Venna is truly a good witch all along.
Things went fine and dandy for the two factions until the third night where he experienced something unusual as the rainstorm began to happen during that night which resulting in him having no choice but to stay at Venna's house and sleeping on the storage room. When he heard a loud scream however, he ended up getting awake which causes him to accidentally broke the lantern and decided to check where Venna is. During his investigation, he found a stack of hay that was blocking something in the library in which Ryo uses his knife that he found on the bathroom and cleaning up the hay which revealed a trapdoor that led to the basement.
When investigating the basement, Ryo then saw a laboratory with a huge cauldron filled with a putrid smelling red liquid there and also a door leading to another secret room. When solving several puzzles to open the secret room, he then discovered a lantern lies there and a recipe book for a nefarious potion. After getting out from the secret room, there is a glimpse of a ghost sitting on a chair in said room and when Ryo came back to check the secret room again, a skull lies on top of the chair. As he got the lantern, Ryo then plans to get out to check Venna outside the house only to find a dead girl that looks like Red Riding Hood that was brutally murdered lying besides the tree.
After Ryo was shocked by what he discovered, Venna then appears behind him and told her what happened. As a result, Venna then decided to check what Ryo has saw but ended up finding nothing because the person was nowhere to be found and this was confirmed to be true after Ryo decided to do a double check on what's outside. This resulted in Venna thinking that Ryo was just sleepwalking and having nightmares due to the stress that he had because he was unable to meet with his father. To compensate, she then tries to take Ryo home to his father before sunrise.
During the night before the Harvest Festival started, Ryo then decided to hang around with Venna again because she will unable to attend there only to be warned by Ingram for his naivety and all of the good deeds she committed was done so that Ryo could repay her with something. Ignoring his warnings again, Ryo then hang around with Venna again as usual until Venna gives a vial filled with strange liquid Ryo found during his investigation and then pour it on Goddess Luciana's Chalice statue. The player will have two choices: Either take the vial or refuse her offer despite Ryo's initial hesitations.
If the player decides to "Take the Vial" and pour it into Goddess' chalice at midnight, Venna then becomes elated and can’t wait to see the results. However, this action causes a horrific effects across the world where Ryo was unable to change back into his human form as his dad went missing and the surroundings suddenly turns into a mixture of red and grey as the moon turns into bloody red including the scarecrows with some of the faces were missing and the body becomes weirdly fleshy, heavily implied that they were murdered. In addition, when Ryo checked the town square, he also discovered that the statue of the goddess had been covered in blood and also several human corpses were hanged around inside the store as they were made for sale. Meeting with Venna at the town square, she then praises Ryo for things that he had done as she already become satisfied with the results because she already became a queen of the world and it was revealed that the harvest already gave her an endless supply of meat to eat as the humanity become a cattle for her. In addition, she also decides to invite her friends to celebrate the festival in the end which leads to the first Bad Ending, "Blood Moon Festival".
If the player refuses to take the vial however, Venna then becomes agitated and began to disown Ryo, viewing him as another disappointment as she began to turn into a monstrous form and attempts to murder him by crippling him first. When he tried to go back to his father, Venna then attempts to attack them both until he uses his magic to banish her from existence as in the end, Ryo's father decided to cover the world in darkness just to protect him, leading to the second Bad Ending, “The Sun Won’t Come Out Tomorrow.”
However, if the players decided to complete specific puzzles in order to get the true ending, Ingram will drop a key to his room during the last day before Harvest Festival started as Ryo went to Venna's house. As Ryo opens Ingram room, he then meets with Ingram and decided to read his journal lied on his floor. After seeing the true nature of Venna, Ryo decided to stay despite Ingram's offers to get out of the house due to his bond with her is so strong much to Ingram's disappointment. However, he also tells Ingram that he got another plan to sort things out.
It was then revealed that his plan is to intentionally break the vial filled with the strange liquid and then proceeds to tell Venna it was an accident. Unable to be fooled, Venna decided to disown him again as a son and turns into a monster in order to kill him just like in another bad ending. However, Ingram then attempts to stop her from hurting Ryo and tells the latter to ran away. Meeting with Ingram, Venna then tells him how much of a disappointment he was as he tends to get in her way, and when Ingram tells her that he isn't scared of her anymore, she then places her claw to Ingram's mouth and claims that she loved him and wanted to see him happy, despite her abysmal treatment she give towards him, as she proceeds to tear apart his mouth to the point it formed a horrific Glasgow Grin. Initially assumed that Venna murdered Ingram, it was revealed that it was the other way around, as Venna was revealed to have been killed once and for all, as Ingram had ended up asking Ryo's father for help to sew his wounded mouth. Happily, both Ryo and Ingram then formed a bond together and become a great siblings to one another as they enjoyed the Harvest Festival, leading to the good and true ending known as "A Smile To Match My Own."
Powers and Abilities[]
Being a powerful witch, Venna has several powers and abilities on her disposal, here are some of the standouts skills that she had shown over the course of the game:
- Black Magic: Being an evil yet formidable witch at least according to Venna herself as she explains towards Ryo that she is the strongest of them all to the point she could live in the forest alone, Venna has mastered the kinds of arts of Black Magic. One of the most notable example of her showcasing her using her black magic spells is when she is able to transform Ingram into a little crow where he ended up disobeying her as the curse that she inflicted towards him won't be able to be reversed unless Ingram drank the blood of his family member, which is his mother, which resulted in him having no choice to relent because of the fact that his mother could crush him like a bug. Another showcase of her black magic is her ability to use Transformation Magic whereupon she transforms herself into becoming a monster in two of the endings in order to murder Ryo after he disobeyed her by declining her offer or sabotaging her plans. It is also possible she also uses her black magic to make people disappear as was shown where after Ryo seen a female corpse that resembles Red Riding Hood girl, Venna then decided to transport the body into somewhere else so that when Ryo checked it for the second time, he would be convinced that there is no one there. However, it can be implied that it was the ghost of her victims that made the projection because even if Venna murders them in a gruesome manner, the ghosts of her victims won't move on to the next life, at least on what Ingram thinks.
- Intelligence: Aside from Black Magic that she has mastered, Venna also has a decent level of intelligence and cunningness under her sleeve. This was shown where she is able to manipulate Ryo easily by taking an advantage of his naivety in order to execute her plan easily as she acts like a charismatic, kind and nurturing parent towards him, knowing the fact that he doesn't have a mother to support him and even at times, lying towards him such as telling Ryo how her son, Ingram, seemingly left her alone. Another point where she displays her amount of intelligence is when she becomes aware of what Ryo had did during the True Ending route despite Ryo's insistence that he accidentally broke the vial that carries the strange liquid in order to be poured to the Goddess Statue's chalice before the Harvest Moon Festival which causes her to snap and attempts to kill Ryo with no hesitation. Another flashes of her intelligence in minor moments is her knowledge to craft and brew potions as she passes her alchemical knowledge towards Ryo in order to strengthen their bonds together in order to manipulate him easier.
- Alchemy Expert: Being a witch, it is also shown that she is an expert in alchemy subject or at the very least, brewing several potions. Her knowledge in alchemy is rather crucial to the plot as it can be shown where she brew a strange potion in her own laboratory located in basement that smelled putrid as it was made by 2678 human bones and possibly the blood of the innocent humans she had killed when they ended up getting lost in the forest. The potion itself is crucial to her plan so that she could turn the world into her personal cattle for human meat by pouring it to the Goddess's Chalice Statue. Thanks to her expert in alchemy, she also used her knowledge to teach Ryo in order to make several potions especially on the advanced stage much to Ryo's enjoyment despite it was the clear that she tries to manipulate her and taking an advantage of his naivety so that he could form a trust with her and win her heart.
- Cooking Expert: Aside from black magic sorcery she had mastered, having a decent level of intelligence and her expertise at crafting potion, Venna is also shown as a decent cook. It can be shown where she used her limited resources such as fruits and vegetables in order to cook some tasty and delicious food as she reserved some meat for a special occasion. The food that she had made was used so that she could feed both herself and Ryo much to the latter's excitement as he complimented the food he had made.

“ | Winter- XX/XX/XX, it hasn’t snowed yet. That makes me happy. It means that I can keep going into town. I used to hate going into town, because of all the scarecrows. Honestly, they still freak me out. It’s like they’re peering into me. Drilling their eyes into my very being. They know I don’t belong. But despite that… They don’t make me feel sick. Not at all. Not like they do to you. I guess that’s why you make me go into town instead, huh? Nah… I think even if they did make me sick, you'd have forced me to go anyway. | „ |
~ Ingram's journal Pt.1 talking about how he didn't feel sick towards the scarecrow unlike what happened to his mother. |
“ | Spring-XX/XX/XX, I saw Ms. B for the first time in a while today. She told me I got so much taller from the last time she saw me. She said she missed seeing me at the library. I was always one of her best students. I learned so quickly. She said she remembered helping me learn to write my name. She started getting emotional about it. I did too. Learning how to write was probably the best thing that ever happened to me. Even if it comes with its own consequences at home… That reminds me. I saw a woman in town getting mad at her kid today. Outside the bookstore, he was whining and screaming and making all sorts of noise. And she clearly had enough. You could see it in her face. She was mad. But she didn’t hit him. | „ |
~ Ingram's journal Pt.2 where he describes his experience towards his teacher where he was treated nicely and also saw a mother getting mad with a child, possibly reflecting the abusive relationship he had with his mom at home. |
“ | Summer-XX/XX/XX, She said I was late coming back from town today. I wasn’t. And I brought her everything she needed, so she had no reason to get so angry. But by this point, I understand that she doesn’t need a reason to be angry. She’ll lock me in the storage room all night for looking at her wrong. I’m sure she thinks it's a punishment, but it’s not like my room was much bigger than the storage room to begin with. She’s begun getting a lot easier to piss off lately, though. I’m not sure why. But it worries me. It’s the only reason why I’m still here. Getting older, it’s apparent now more than ever that somebody has to keep an eye on her. If only I was strong enough to do something about it. | „ |
~ Ingram's Journal Pt.3 where he described Venna's abusive behavior towards him. |
“ | Autumn-XX/XX/XX, I know what she wants to do now. And I know she’ll try to make me do it. I refuse. These are people, not her playthings. And certainly not her food. And they’ve been more of a family to me than she ever was. Too many times now, I listened to her because I was afraid. But this is bigger than me. And I won’t let her have her way. I’m not going to help her to do what she wants. This is the last straw. I’m running away. I’m going to town and I’m going to tell everybody about what she’s planning. I’m not afraid anymore. | „ |
~ Ingram attempting to rebel against his own mother because of her appalling plan that makes Ingram repulsed towards her. |
Dialogues[]
“ | Ryo: Can you tell me about the witch? Who lives in the forest? Ryo's Father: Haha. I'm sorry. Did mentioning it the other day scare you? You don't have anything to worry about, Ryo. Even though we live quite near the forest, she can't get near here, or the town. Ryo: Really? Why's that? Ryo's Father: That witch you see... She isn't just a witch. She's a crow too. That's why we have so many scarecrows, don't you know? They help ward off evil spirits including nasty old crows. |
„ |
~ Ryo's father telling him about the witch's nature and how she was unable to attack them due to so many scarecrows that prevented her to come to either town or the farm. |
“ | Venna: Do you always come out at night? Do your mom and dad know you're out here? Ryo: Oh! Uh... My dad doesn't know. I would get in trouble if he did. Venna: And your mom? Ryo: Ehehe... I don't have a Mom. Venna: I see... Would you like one? Ryo: Huh? Venna: I apologize, that must sound so sudden! It's just... I've been alone out here for so long. Why, I can't even remember the last time I saw another person. And it's just... Just... Forgive me if I appear a bit emotional, it's just... I had a child, once. But children don't stay children forever. That child grew up and left me here on my own. Ever since, I've been, well... Having a bit of "empty nest syndrome" as they say. Your generosity, and your kind smile... It just reminds me so much of my own little one. So I wouldn't mind if you wanted to come back again. Why, you could come visit me every night if you like! I could make extra dinner to share, and you can help me cook, or read in my library, or play in the yard. It would be like having my little one back home again. Do you like that idea? Ryo: (Being startled at first) Yeah. I really like that idea. |
„ |
~ Venna proposing Ryo to become an adoptive mother for him after hearing that he has no mother. |
“ | Venna: Your father has the right to be concerned, you know. There are many dangerous things in the night, and even more so out in the woods. Ryo: Really, then why do you live here? Venna: … Because I'm stronger than all of them combined. Ryo: Really? You must be a SUPER powerful witch then! Venna: Haha, you flatter me. But I don’t think so. I’m strong enough to handle the things that go bump in the night, but… Not as strong as I’d like to be. Ryo: How strong do you wanna be? Cause like, my Dad’s a pretty strong witch too! He brought me to life, after all! Venna: I can see that! Ryo: If you want, I can ask him how he did it! Then I could tell you, and you could get as strong as he is! Venna: Haha, that’s sweet… But I think I’ll be okay. I have my own plan to get stronger. And it won’t be too much longer before I can see it through. |
„ |
~ Ryo's conversation with Venna about how she could survive in the forest and her desire to grow stronger in the future. |
“ | Ryo: Uh… Venn--I mean, mom? Venna: Yes? Ryo: Can I ask you something? Venna: Of course, go ahead. Ryo: There’s a lot of scarecrows back in town. I was told it was to keep you away. Venna: Mm-hm. Ryo: B-but I’m a scarecrow! Do I, like… Hurt you? Or something? Venna: Oh, no, no dear! It’s true that the scarecrows keep me away… But you’re just one little scarecrow. And such a polite one, too! With a smile only someone as cute as you could pull off! You’re nothing I can’t handle. But, the amount of scarecrows in your town… My, it’s just nauseating! It feels like every home must have one or two sitting outside. I can’t stay around that many scarecrows for so long, I’d get terribly sick. I’d collapse! Ryo: I see… Venna: Don’t give me that look. Like I said, I can handle a little scarecrow like you. Ryo: But I want you to be able to see everyone in town, too! Venna: I’m sorry, Ryo. But I think it’s clear that they don’t want people like me there. |
„ |
~ Ryo's asking Venna about her stance with Scarecrows due to the fact that Ryo is a scarecrow himself. |
“ | Venna: So, are you excited for the Harvest Festival tomorrow? Ryo: Mmhm! It’s actually gonna be the first one I’m allowed to attend! Even my friends are gonna be there! Venna: Haha, sounds fun… (Suddenly pauses in silence) Ryo: H-hey, are you okay? Venna: Oh, yes! I was just thinking...That one day I would like to be able to attend, too. Ryo: I’m sure we can make that happen! I mean once everyone in town realizes that you don’t mean any harm n’ stuff. Venna: Yes, maybe one day… Still though, I’d like to contribute to the festival somehow, someway...So I made something for it. Ryo: Oh…? Venna: It’s this! Ryo: (This vial… The liquid inside looks like the red stuff from that cauldron I saw the other night. It smelled awful…) Venna: The town… There’s a statue in the center, right? Of a goddess, holding a chalice? Do you think you can pour this vial into the chalice she holds? It’s a good luck charm! I made this to ensure a wonderful harvest season for everyone. Ryo: O-oh, uh… I dunno… I mean, tonight the chalice is gonna fill up with moonlight! And it’s supposed’ta have the same effect…! Plus, um… I’m not supposed to touch the statue, really… It’s considered very sacred, and uhm...uh...If I touch it, I could get in trouble for uh… Vandalisms, n’ stuff… Venna: Please, Ryo? I spent a long time on it, and it’d really mean a lot to me. You don’t even have to come back after you do it! You can just go to bed at home! It really isn’t a big deal you know. I doubt you would get in that much trouble. And… I’ve done so much for you, haven’t I? Can’t you do this one favor? For me? For your mother? After all she’s done for you? (The players then have the choice to “Take the Vial” or “Refuse” her offer) |
„ |
~ Venna attempting to manipulate Ryo to do her own bidding. |
“ | Ryo: N... no, I’m sorry. I can’t do that. Pardon me? It wouldn’t be right… At least, not without asking first. I was always taught to respect the goddess’s statue. And that the only drink allowed in the chalice is moonlight. Venna: Really? After everything I’ve done for you? I fed you, I housed you, I taught you… And this is how you repay me? As if I owed you any of those things to begin with? Ryo: I know, and I’m sorry, Mom… I can’t do it. Venna: Then… You cannot be my child. Ryo: Mom…? (Suddenly, Venna turns into a monstrous form and then destroys his legs)' |
„ |
~ Ryo's fate if he refused to take the vial which would lead to second bad ending, "The Sun Won't Come Out Tomorrow". |
“ | Ingram: C’mon kid, let’s get you out of here. Ryo: Hey, hey, hey! I can’t leave yet! Mom is still waiting for me out there! Ingram: Ugh! You DON’T want that woman as your mom, kid! Don’t you see that by now? Look what she did to me the second I said “no” to her! What do you think is gonna happen to you!? Ryo: Stop yelling so much. Even… Even if… Even if Mom isn’t as nice as I thought, does that really mean I can just leave? Ingram: Of course you can! I’m giving you an out right now! Hop out the window and we’ll get back to town! Leave this old witch to rot in the woods by herself! Ryo: But she’s waiting for me out there. Ingram: Ugh, I should’ve known you’d be difficult about this. I’m trying to save you from my fate! Or hell, even worse! But of course you wouldn’t get it. You’re just a kid! Ryo: Yeah, and you’re just a teenager! Ingram: Kgh! Ryo: Besides, isn’t trying to run away exactly how YOU got caught? Ingram: …! J-jeez kid, alright--! I get it! But what are you going to do, then? She’s going to ask you to do something out there for her, you know. It’s harvest night. And she’s been planning for it. If you tried to refuse her... Ryo: I’ll figure something out! I’m a smart kid after all. And Mom, maybe it won’t be as bad as you think! Ingram: Don’t place your bets on it. I’ll be waiting for you outside. Whatever you do, get out that front door safely, alright? |
„ |
~ Ryo refusing to escape alongside Ingram because how indebted he is to Venna. Despite this, he'll make sure that he come out okay towards Ingram during the True End route. |
“ | Ryo: S-sure, I’ll take it…! Let me just… (Ryo then drops the Dropped the vial) Ah! I dropped it! I-I’m so sorry, Mom! It was an accident…! B-but it isn’t all bad! I’ll just go back home and tell everyone to take the scarecrows down, and then we can celebrate together and you wouldn’t have to… Venna: You dropped it. Ryo: I know, I know! But we can just… Venna: You dropped it on purpose. Do you think I’m stupid? Ryo: N-no, of course I don’t! I just… Venna: Outrageous. All my children know how to do is disappoint me. Ryo: Mom…? (Suddenly she then prepares to turn herself into a monstrous form to attempt to cripple Ryo. However, Ingram then appears and tries to stop her doing so) Ryo: H...huh? I’m… Ingram: NICE TRY. (Suddenly pointing his face towards Ryo) Get outta here, kid. Don’t just sit there, go! I’m going to take care of it. |
„ |
~ Venna attempting to murder Ryo during the true end if he ended up accidentally broke the vial until she was stoped by Ingram. |
“ | Venna: You… Look at what you… Doing what you know best. Getting in my way. You always were a disappointment to me, Ingram. Ingram: (Pauses in silence) Venna: ...Not going to say anything? Not even to your own mother? Ingram: … You can’t scare me anymore. That’s the real reason you cursed me, isn’t it? Because you knew you couldn’t scare me anymore. And when I’m not scared, I’m stronger than you. Venna: Ha! We’ll see about that! You know, Ingram. Despite all the heartache you’ve caused me, I am still a parent. Ingram: The hell!? (Suddenly, Venna then places her claws on Ingram’s mouth) What are you doing!? Get your ugly claws out of my mouth Venna: Did it make you feel better to say that? Are you happy now? It may be so hard for you to see, but I am a mother. And there’s nothing a mother loves more than to see her children happy. So, won’t you do your poor old lady some good and smile for mommy? (Suddenly the scene began to splatter its blood, as it was revealed that Venna attempted to rip out Ingram’s mouth with her claws)' |

Trivia[]
- The face that Ingram has thanks to Venna attempting to tear apart his mouth during ending almost resembled Jeff the Killer, an infamous creepypasta character from the creepypasta of the same name.
- The story of Crowscare paid some homages to several fairy tales such as Hansel & Gretel and Red Riding Hood, with Venna taking the role of a witch-like character that was living in the forest that apparently preyed on children and also has a penchant of eating human meat while also seemingly acted nice towards the main protagonists who are children which alludes to Venna's personality as a wicked witch who ended up pretending to be nice in order to get Ryo's trust to do her bidding. The Red Riding Hood reference can be seen with one of the victims of Venna who wears a Red Hood as she travelled through the forest and got killed by Venna, who acted as the Big Bad Wolf as a result.
- Besides her witch theme, Venna's design has so many symbolism to be analyzed such as:
- One of Venna's main theme is supposed to be a crow or at the very least, a raven, which makes sense as she serves as the crow or a raven that contrast with Ryo, a scarecrow that supposed to drive away birds. Venna's behavior and personality however, mostly matches the symbolism that the Raven has as according to Worldbirds.com, Raven symbolizes wisdom and affection as it's jet black colors represents the night which also makes sense due to the fact that Venna builds a rather motherly affection towards Ryo and gave him some knowledge in order to make potions and stuff despite it was all an act in the long run. However, according to uniguide, Raven also symbolizes intelligence and cunning and also partnership and guidance which also reflects Venna's relationship as an intelligent person who tried to take an advantage of Ryo's naivety by acting as a nurturing mother that teach Ryo new stuffs so that she could get what she wants.
- Venna's main color is black with a bit of a combination of dark grey and a bit of purple and dark brown colors that complimented with her design. According to incredibleart.org, the symbolism of color black represents the likes of power, evil, elegance, unhappiness, anger, formality or mystery which matched her personality as an evil yet elegant witch;the gray color that she has represents intelligence and maturity which reflects her as a manipulative person trying to take an advantage of Ryo acting as a doting and mature mother; The color brown that she has represents comfort, home and reliability despite it is shown in a rather ironic sense or at the very least, represent what Ryo had experienced at first with Venna as they bond together in which she gave him home, safety and comfort as a doting and adoptive mother despite her manipulative nature and lastly, the color that she has represents nobility, cruelty, transformation or arrogance as this reflects some of the tidbits of her personality as arrogance represents on how she acts as a haughty witch that is not scared with Ingram's threats and calling herself a strongest witch in the forest, nobility represents on how she elegantly dressed, cruelty represents her true and monstrous nature such as how abusive she was to her biological son and her attempts to make the human world as her personal cattle and the transformation represent her ability to transforms into a monstrous form in order to kill Ryo.
- It is also shown that Venna also wears a masquerade mask. According to dictionary.com, Masquerade means several things such as party or dance where people wears masks and very elegant costumes to disguise themselves, a facade and the activity or existence under false pretenses. It makes sense in context due to the fact that the word masquerade matches her manipulative yet seemingly fake personality as she portrays herself as a good and nurturing mother towards Ryo so that she could gain what she wanted and also hides her rather true and monstrous nature unknown to Ryo which resulted in Ryo ending up gaining her trust and believing her to be a misunderstood yet kind witch that can be redeemed despite it was not the case with her.
- Venna becomes sick if she is around too many scarecrows.
- Venna is not an ordinary human, and is actually a humanoid crow-witch.
- She, aside from The Monster, the Reginald Tetra/Blackwood Butcher, Embry, Lambchop, Enide, Ovidius, and Twila Sophio, are the only known antagonists made by arcadekitten.
