Harold "Harry" Osborn, also known as Venom with his symbiote, is a minor character in both the 2018 superhero video game Marvel's Spider-Man and its 2020 spin-off Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales and one of the two main antagonists (alongside Kraven the Hunter) of its 2023 sequel Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
He is the son of Oscorp's CEO and Mayor Norman Osborn, who had bonded him with an alien parasite-like organism called a symbiote as a means of keeping him alive to save him from perishing like his wife. The symbiote, codenamed VNM-252, initially went off to bond with his best friend, Peter Parker after he was nearly killed by Kraven the Hunter, before it eventually returned to him, perfectly fusing the two into Venom. With the combination of the symbiote's corrupting influence and Harry's dream, Venom intends to "heal the world" by terraforming all human life into symbiotes, with the symbiote becames the arch-nemesis of Miles and one the archenemies of Peter in the process.
Portrayals[]
- Harry Osborn was voiced by Scott Porter, who also voiced Damian Wayne in Injustice 2 and Heimdall in God of War: Ragnarok, in the first game and by Graham Phillips, who also played Nick St. Clair in Riverdale, in the second game.
- The symbiote was voiced by Tony Todd, who also played Candyman in the franchise of the same name, Grange in The Crow, Captain Darrow in The Rock, Earl Jenkins in Smallville, King Deucalion in Minotaur, Shadow in Shadow: Dead Riot, Benjamin Juma in the 24 franchise, Reverend Zombie in the Hatchet film series, The Fallen in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Dreadwing in Transformers Prime, Darkseid in the LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes film series, Zoom in the Arrowverse, Space Kook in Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!, Darkseid in the DC Animated Movie Universe, Luther Thompson in Scream and William in Tales from the Hood 3.
Appearance[]
Initially bonded to the symbiote, Harry adapts a black tactical armor, with elements of the Spider-Man suit, such as black and white lenses. He later forms a stylized spider emblem after the symbiote comes in contact with Peter Parker.
Eventually, after being separated from Peter and bonding with Harry once again, the symbiote grants Harry a more muscular humanoid form. This form is the biggest seen yet, standing at exactly 10'4 feet tall. This form also has a mouth with two rows of long bloody fangs, an elongated tongue, and the white spider emblem its previous forms had. For eyes, this form uses distinct, alien-like white eyes, which have curves in some places.
In some special situations, Venom adapts a new form when he becomes enraged. This new form of his acts as a shield, granting him extra layer of symbiote mass, and makes him grow a rougher, pore filled body, as well as extra tendrils growing on his back and shoulders. His eyes also grow a somewhat transparent second layer, while his spider emblem changes with it being much more noticeable and sharp, removing the curves the original had.
Venom later gains the ability to sprout gigantic wings out of from his back. The outer frame of the wings are colored black, and beige spikes adorn the frames. The inner wings are crimson colored, with tattered edges. When these wings sprout, they modify Venom's emblem slightly. Instead of the insignia being connected on its back and stomach, the connection is broken, and the back emblem is removed. The stomach half however, still remains.
Personality[]
“ | We are healed. Finally free. We can give that gift to everyone. But we need you with us, Pete. Heal the world. Together. | „ |
~ Venom's desire of healing the world with Peter. |
Harry Osborn was originally a bright and cheerful friend of Peter Parker's, who he had hung out with a lot during their school days. He loved both his parents, with him wanting to follow his mother's footsteps in helping those in need as an environmental attorney. His mother's death would eventually serve as a motivation for him to help heal those in need around the world.
However, when he became inflicted with an illness, Harry's initial bright future took a negative turn. He slowly developed envy towards Peter, due to how successful Peter's life seemed in comparison to his but nonetheless, he still acted as a good and supportive friend of him, and when he was bonded with the symbiote for the first time, he was inspired to become a hero much like Peter, helping him on his missions as Spider-Man.
Despite this, his inner jealousy remained and it would ultimately come to fruition when being separated from the symbiote, developing a hatred for both Kraven the Hunter for nearly killing Peter and later Peter himself, foolishly believing that he would rather allow him to die after he had saved his. The symbiote in turn would develop a hatred for both Kraven and Miles Morales for separating it from Peter as well. Likewise, when both the symbiote and Harry reunite and bond with each other, their inner wrath and hatred allowed them to perfectly fuse together into the being known as Venom.
Initially, Harry was shocked at his transformation due to the actions he committed, including eating Kraven, but soon accepted his potential as Venom when the symbiote intended to fulfill their dream of healing the world through terraforming the world into symbiotes. Ultimately, Venom is the result of Harry's inner bitter feelings being unsuppressed, as well the symbiote's strong desire to be with its host. Due to this, Venom acts in a manner that suggests he is and has always been Harry, using both his memories and his motives to convert them as his own.
Despite his bitter feelings, Venom genuinely believes his actions help his hosts for the better, in which the symbiote was all the more willing to help make Peter be a better Spider-Man at protecting New York and later aiding Harry in accomplishing their goal of making the world a better place for everyone. It's also for this reason that Venom wants no harm done to Peter and instead wants him to rule the world together, due to both Harry and the symbiote's attachment to him.
However, this attachment does not extend towards Peter and Harry's friends and loved ones, as Venom is more than willing to endanger their lives and convert them into his minions without much regard for them. Part of this is due to the symbiote's feelings of betrayal and rejection from Peter, believing that his friends and family caused Peter to turn against it, as well as Harry's suppressed anger over his illness. The only possible exception to this would be Norman, who Venom considers himself to still be his son and that his state is exactly what Norman wanted, thus fulfilling his own goal of saving his son.
Because of the symbiote's corrupting nature however, Venom appears to have a warped sense of what's best. His actions are in response to Harry's desire for healing the world, but his solution to this goal is to terraform the world into symbiotes, in which while this would keep everyone healed, it would stripping away of their free will and reduce the world into a place full of feral monsters. By having complete control over everyone through his hive mind, Venom believes his actions to be a gift for all life without seeing the alternative negatives behind them. Because of this, Venom does not take it well when Miles accuses him of being motivated by selfish desires and feels betrayed that Peter wants to stop what he believed is what Peter and Harry always wanted.
In the end, however, Harry would come to realize that his actions as Venom have done more harm than it has done good for others. Due to this, he is more than willing to let Peter sacrifice him and the symbiote, as a means of ensuring that his actions as Venom would come to an end.
Biography[]
Past[]
Harry Osborn was born to Oscorp CEO and founder Norman Osborn and environmental attorney Emily Osborn with Harry growing up as a close friend of Peter Parker. He helped his mother with her many efforts, including special stations designed to monitor pollution in New York City, up until her death. A year before the events of Marvel's Spider-Man, Harry became terminally ill with an unknown illness so Norman placed him into a stasis tube whilst creating the cover story that Harry was studying in Europe.
In desperation, he worked with Wilson Fisk to create a medicine that would come to be known as Devil's Breath but the formula was soon abandoned and locked away since its instability made it more like a bio-weapon, which would come into possession of Mister Negative and the Inner Demons.
At some point years prior, a meteorite had came down to Earth, containing a black-goo like substance. It was discovered by a team led by Norman and Dr. Curt Connors, in which they brought it back to Oscorp for further study, labelling it as VNM-252. The incident would be kept under the archival footage, GR-35. They later discovered that the substance was a living organism that could bond with someone at a sub-cellular level, leading them to dub it as a symbiote. Norman opted to have it bond with his son, Harry, in order to keep him stabilized in his stasis tube, until they could develop a proper cure for him.
Marvel's Spider-Man[]
Although he is not present during the game, Harry is mentioned at multiple points due to his cover story and a message on Norman's answering machine can be found when Peter infiltrates Norman Osborn's apartment. His voice can also be heard when Peter uncovers his mother's research stations as he does not want Oscorp to shut them down. In addition, Yuriko Watanabe jokingly asks Spider-Man if he has a black and white suit. When looking through a shop window, a black-suited Spider-Man action figure can be seen among other collectibles.
During a post-credits scene, following the defeat and imprisonment of Doctor Octopus and the Sinister Six, Harry is seen in a stasis tank with the symbiote attached to him, which reacts and copies Norman when he places a hand on the tank.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2[]
After being bonded with the symbiote long enough, Harry manages to recover from his illness and proceeds to reunite up with Peter and Mary Jane at May's old house. Harry then takes Peter back to Midtown Highschool where he surprises Peter with a gift, that being an official key card of the organization Harry founded, Emily-May Foundation.
The symbiote continued to remain dormant inside Harry until an attack on a theme park on Coney Island where Harry helps Peter Parker/Spider-Man save a few people on a roller coaster. Harry then teams up with Peter, using the symbiote to form a suit of his very own, and assists in helping him save Tombstone from the Hunters. After successfully saving Tombstone, Harry and Peter depart on their own matters to attend to, but not before receiving a symbol on his chest, similar to the spider symbol on Peter's suit.
Harry later accompanies Peter on a mission to rescue Mary Jane, who had been attempting to save Dr. Connors from Kraven's capture. In the ongoing conflict, Peter ends up being stabbed by Kraven, causing Harry to lash out and beat Kraven. Harry eventually goes back to check on how Peter is doing with Mary Jane, but as he griefs over losing his friend, the symbiote proceeds to bond with Peter and heals his injuries, granting him its powers.
Peter manages to held off his own with the symbiote against the Hunters, long enough for him and Mary Jane to escape with Harry. After learning that the symbiote is what was keeping Harry alive, Peter later attempts to bond it back to him, but the symbiote refuses and remains attached to Peter. With no luck, Peter and Harry decide to track down Connors in order to remove the symbiote from him.
Peter and Harry then manage to develop an antidote to restore Connors back to his human self, in which Peter later uses it in a confrontation with the Lizard, successfully curing Connors. After being cured, Connors immediately becomes horrified once he sees Peter wearing the symbiote, in which he explains that it is a sentient alien that came into Oscorp's possession and requests that it must be destroyed. Peter refuses, however, due to the symbiote slowly corrupting him and keeps it with him.
Over time, the symbiote slowly begins corrupting Peter's moral sense, driving him to become more hostile and ruthless around his friends and enemies. Eventually, it reaches to the point where Peter begins losing any sense of his actions and causes him to become a feral and barbaric being, severely straining his relationship with his friends. Meanwhile, Harry's illness resurfaces and his health begins to deteriorate. He tells Peter twice at this point that he needs the symbiote back, but Peter makes it clear that he has no intention of returning it, as Norman is working on an alternate cure, but with no success.
Peter later arrives to save Miles, who had been captured by Kraven to fight Martin Li, in which Peter manages to do so. Under the symbiote's influence, however, it drives Peter to nearly kill Kraven, before Miles prevents him from doing so. After a fight between the two, Miles manages to help Peter get the symbiote off of him and put it back in its containment.
After successfully separating the symbiote from himself, Peter takes it back to Oscorp in an attempt to destroy it, but Harry prevents him from doing so, breaking the containment and rebonding with the symbiote, transforming him into Venom. Venom then goes on a rampage through Oscorp before eventually reaching outside in the city, where he fights off against the Hunters. Venom then encounters Kraven, who desires to die in a glorious battle with him. Venom manages to kill him by biting his head off, ending the Russian murderer's reign of terror and avenging Peter, who nearly died to him. Horrified at his actions, Harry briefly regains control and visits his mother's grave to reflect, but the symbiote proceeds to persuade him that together they can "heal the world" by infecting everyone with symbiotes.
Venom later visits Mary Jane and keeps her hostage, until Peter manages to arrive to save her. Unfortunately, as Peter insulting it as a "thing", Venom angrily smash the table and transformed again. He manages to infect Mary Jane with a symbiote of her own, transforming her into Scream. Venom then proceeds to leave them be where he makes further preparation. for his plan. Venom later recovers the meteorite that originally brought the symbiote to Earth, as a means of making him powerful enough to expand the symbiote corruption across the world.
After receiving a brand new symbiote known as Anti-Venom, which is created by the fusion of Martin Li's powers and the remnants of the symbiote with him, Peter works together with Miles and Mary Jane on how they can stop Venom. They later arrive to his lair where Venom reveals himself and battles against Peter. Venom gives Peter many opportunities to join him, but despite this, Peter refuses, causing Venom to be greatly upset. He then discovers that Miles and Mary Jane had stolen the meteorite from his lair, promoting him to form wings and fly to their location at the EMF.
Venom eventually arrives with Peter and attempts to reclaim the meteorite, but Miles manages to hold him off, long enough for Mary Jane to use the particle accelerator to destroy it. As a result, Venom's symbiote spawns begin to disappear and Peter then proceeds to use the powers of his Anti-Venom symbiote to separate the symbiote off of Harry, burning it away.
With the symbiote off of Harry once more, Harry is left unresponsive, but Miles successfully uses his electrical powers to resuscitate him and he slips into a coma. He is then brought out of the EMF Foundation to a nearby ambulance by Peter, Miles and MJ. Norman manages to arrive to see his son in his state, which causes him to angrily blame the Spider-Men before leaving to accompany his son. Eventually, Harry was brought back to his home to rest, while Norman laments over the current state of his son.
Venomverse Reborn[]
Immediately after Harry and the symbiote bonded together, Venom was taken by Knull into another world and showed him an envisioned dream of his where he has successfully conquered the world, in an attempt to persuade him into joining his army. Venom however refused, as he did not share the same dream that Knull envisioned for himself. Knull laughed at this notion and attempted to correct him by sending one of his minions after him, causing Venom to fend for himself.
As Venom fights off against Knull's minion, he makes it clear that while he enjoys depriving those from his world their free will, it's to help improve their lives, while Knull does it solely out of self interests. Knull then attempts to correct him on this that he his their god and he will have him submit. Venom then reveals himself as Harry, who tells Knull he already has a father named Norman that already loves him and can see through his lies, before making it clear that he has no intentions of submitting to him as he defeats Knull's minion. Venom then suspects that Knull only wants him because he is not of his universe but due to this, he has no real power to compel him. Knull then threatens to kill him, but stops midway, which makes Venom suspect that even someone like Knull is bounded by rules that prevents him from interfering with his world at this current time.
Ultimately, Knull decides to send Venom back to his world, assuring him that he will not forget his acts of transgression. Venom then returns back to his world, with his memories of this encounter being erased in the process.

Trivia[]
- Venom is overall the second role of Tony Todd in which he merely voices the character in a way his secret identity is hidden and played by another actor, his first being the Arrowverse's take on Zoom in The Flash. This is ultimately played with, in that while Todd does have a few lines as Venom before Harry Osborn fuses with the symbiote again, Todd starts voicing the symbiote regularly after it has rejoined Harry, and most of the cast are aware that Harry is wearing the symbiote.
- Tony Todd stated that he really enjoyed playing Venom in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, citing Venom as one of his favorite characters.
- This is one of the few incarnations of Venom who has no intention of murdering Peter after the latter forcefully separates from it. However, Venom does attempt to kill Peter during the final battle, showing that any care the symbiote had for Peter has subverted.
- This is the second interpretation of Venom not to have Eddie Brock as its host the first being the Ultimate Spider-Man TV series, where Harry Osborn was also Venom. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 creative director, Bryan Intihar stated this was because they wanted to tell an original story and something that departures from the Marvel Comics and films.
- In contrast to other iterations of the character (and even symbiotes in general) where extreme heat is one of his few weaknesses, this incarnation of Venom is immune to fire. Intihar stated that the symbiotes having several weaknesses posed a problem for the team, as they discussed how they would be able to convey all of them in the story. Therefore, the decision was made to streamline Venom's weaknesses down to just high-frequency sounds instead.[1]
- A small running gag throughout the third act involves Venom getting offended when people refer to him as a "thing". This is likely an allusion to his Sony's Marvel Universe counterpart's contempt towards being referred to as a "parasite".
- Venom's plan to turn the entire world into symbiotes is similar to the symbiote's Web of Shadows counterpart, Spider-Man: Spider's Shadow counterpart and Marvel's Spider-Man 2017 animated series counterpart.
- This is the second time Venom has been a playable character in a Spider-Man video game, the first being the 2005 video game Ultimate Spider-Man. Much like his counterpart in said video game, Venom is the first ever character in Marvel's Spider-Man to be playable while also serving as an antagonist.
- Peter shares this distinction as well, albeit in the opposite way, serving as a boss to be fought by Miles after being pushed too far by Kraven with the black suit on despite being one of the game's primary protagonists. Much like Harry, it's due to him falling victim to the symbiote's corruption.
- Scott Porter, who voiced Harry Osborn in Marvel's Spider-Man, was recast with Graham Phillips in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 because the developers wanted to have Harry play a more prominent role in the story, in addition that they wanted to go "photorealistic" and Porter's age gap would likely have some issues with that.
- When Harry first fully dons the symbiote to help out Peter, the suit heavily resembles Agent Venom.
- The symbiote's archive footage name, GR-35, is a reference to its proper debut in the Ultimate comics, Ultimate Spider-Man #35. Its codename, VNM-252, is also a reference to its original debut in the comics, first appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man #252.
- Oscorp's designation of the symbiote "VNM-252" is similar to the designation of the symbiote as "V-252" in the 2017 animated series Spider-Man.
- It is the first Venom to sprout wings to achieve flight, rather than relying on super jumps or web-slinging.
