Becoming Venom[]
During a time when Jameson's son Colonel John Jameson was returning a mission in space, the shuttle was returning at Kennedy Airport with a new isotope known as Promethium X, that Colonel Jameson says is more powerful than plutonium, and Brock was struck in traffic in his car on the George Washington Bridge intending to report on the shuttle landing. Unfortnetly, something goes wrong with the shuttle which causes it to lose control and make a crash landing on the Washington Bridge. While everyone on the bridge is told abandon their vehicles, Brock stays intending to get pictures of the crash. After narrowly avoiding being hit by the shuttle, Brock witnesses the Rhino steal the Promethium X from shuttle, which he photographs, and Spider-Man pulling out Colonel Jameson and his partner out of the shuttle before it falls off the bridge. When Jameson arrives at the scene, Brock confronts him, lying that Spider-Man robbed the shuttle and offers Jameson the photos he took in exchange for old job back, which Jameson accepts, placing a bounty on the capture of Spider-Man.
At the Bugle, while Brock is praised by Jameson for his photos, they are both confronted by Spider-Man, now wearing a new black suit and acting more aggressive, and then Spider-Man reveals that it the Rhino then robbed the shuttle, not him, which Jameson does not believe, before security arrives but Spider-Man manages to escape. However, when Jameson visits his son at the hospital, he reveals to his father that the Rhino did rob the shuttle. A furious Jameson then confronts Brock about this, and fires him yet again for lying, while Brock tries to explain to Jameson he did it for him, Jameson isn't fooled rebutting it saying to Brock that he didn't for himself, forcing Jameson to suspend his bounty on Spider-Man. Now with his reputation shattered, Brock returning to his apartment, venting about Spider-Man, only to learn he has been evicted. While sitting outside, Brock is confronted by a man calling himself the Shocker, telling him that his boss is demanding the photos of the shuttle crash, and attacks Brock, but Spider-Man, who was looking for the photos himself, arrives fights the Shocker giving Brock the opportunity to escape.
The next night, Brock follows Jameson and Spider-Man to an old church, after the Shocker kidnaps Jameson's son in exchange for the Promethium X, which Spider-Man had taken from Shocker and Alistair Smythe the previous night, then Brock gets in the middle between Shocker and Spider-Man and tries to attack Spider-Man for revenge but he in turn is attacked by the Shocker, as he still has business with him. After Spider-Man chases Shocker up a bell tower, Brock interferes again, but Spider-Man traps him in a web and places under the bell to keep him from doing so. Later, Spider-Man defeats the Shocker, but breaks free from the symbiote, his black suit after discovering it's weakness to sound when bell starts ringing, the symbiote finds Brock, who is still hanging the web, and bonds with him instead. Now having joined together the symbiote and calling themselves Venom, they vow revenge on Spider-Man.
As the symbiote tried and failed to bond with Spider-Man, it grants Venom immunity to the Spider-Sense, as well as reveals the knowledge of Spider-Man's identity, Peter, and important people in his life such as his Aunt May, and the girl he loves Mary Jane Watson. After Venom prevents both Shocker and Rhino from killing Spider-Man, as he wants to do it himself, Venom reveals himself, and his knowledge of his secret identity, to Spider-Man. After briefly fighting Spider-Man, which he gains the upper-hand due his immunity to the Spider-Sense, Venom spends the night psychologically torturing him. He starts by threatening to revealing his identity and attempting to have unmasked with the help of Jameson, then showing up on Peter's date with Mary Jane and following the two of them for a short time, and then finally showing up at Peter's home, and charming Aunt May, whom he threaten earlier. As a fed up Spider-Man had enough, and decided to fight back, Venom finds his home with newspaper clippings of his firing, then Venom begins to chasing Spider-Man to a military launch pad, where a shuttle named after Colonel Jameson, which his father had Peter and the other Bugle employees earlier that night, is being deployed in to space. After following Spider-Man to the top of the shuttle walkway, Brock is separated from the symbiote thanks to the loud noise from the shuttle's engine, then Spider-Man uses his webbing to attach the symbiote to the shuttle before it takes off. After Spider-Man escapes, he leaves Brock to found by MPs who arrest him.
Due to his ramblings about being Venom and the symbiote, Brock was sent to the Ravencroft Institute for the Criminally Insane. At Ravencroft, Brock falls in love his psychologist Dr. Ashley Kafka, who tries to convince Brock that Venom and the symbiote was a stress related delusion.
Fight against Dormammu and Carnage[]
One night, after a session with Dr. Kafka, Cletus Kasady, a dangerous and insane criminal who fought Spider-Man, was incarcerated at Ravencroft, placed into the cell next to Eddie's, and flirted with Dr. Kafka, then Eddie took a mutual dislike towards Kasady. Later that night, Eddie was contacted in astral form by sorcerer Baron Mordo, who offers him his symbiote back in exchange for Brock offering his services to Mordo's master, Dormammu, which Kasady overhears and offers his services instead. After Brock tells Kasady to stay out of it, Brock agrees to help Dormammu.
The next day, Brock is visited by a woman who is actually possessed by the symbiote, then it bonds with Brock once more, allowing him to become Venom again, and convincing Dr. Kafka that it wasn't a delusion. Venom then escapes from Ravencroft, despite Dr. Kafka's pleas, and goes to Baron Mordo's lair, where Dormammu speaks to him from his dimension, and explains how he had Mordo manipulate the shuttle into returning to Earth. Venom goes to attack Stark Industries to retrieve an Inter-Dimensional Probe under Dormammu's orders, as the probe will allow him to be brought to Earth. Once there, Venom fights against Spider-Man, who is given help by War Machine, Iron Man's partner. As the two start to gain the upper-hand over Venom, he then gets help from the offspring of the symbiote, Carnage, as the symbiote was about to reproduce which was another Dormammu had it brought back to Earth, and had the new symbiote bond with Kasady. Dr. Kafka then shows up, as she saw the news coverage of Venom attacking Stark Industries, tries to Brock stop what he's doing. Just as Carnage was about to kill Spider-Man, Venom stops him, as he still wants to do it himself, then he and Carnage try to kill each other, before Mordo stops them and reminds them of their deal with Dormammu. Both reluctantly agree and escape together with the probe.
After bringing the probe to Mordo, Venom and Carnage resume trying to kill each other, before Dormammu intervenes, telling them he also needs an equal life force to also enter Earth. As Venom sees his debt has been paid, he refuses and escapes. Brock then arrives at Peter's house, where after a brief confrontation with Mary-Jane, he learns from Aunt May that Peter is at the Bugle and goes there. At the Bugle, after trying to attack Jameson, Venom fights both Spider-Man and Iron Man, but hindered by presence of Dr. Kafka, who tries convince Brock to fight symbiote, before Venom escapes and takes Ashley with him, while Spider-Man and Iron Man follow.
Brock brings Ashley back to Ravencroft, where he explains how the symbiote is starting to see her as a threat, they then go to Dr. Connors, who is able to separate Brock from the symbiote and put it a containment unit. While Brock is recovering from the separation, he learns from that Ashley, who had her life drained by Carnage, had been kidnapped the latter. After Spider-Man and Iron Man show up and enlist Brock's help to find Mordo's lair, Brock chooses to become Venom one last time, despite Dr. Connors' warning he won't survive another separation, takes the two to Mordo's lair. Once there, they fight against Mordo, Carnage and Dormammu, who just entered Earth, Spider-Man quickly reverses the polarity of the probe to Dormammu back through the portal, which releases the souls Carnage collected including Ashley's, but the portal could not be closed unless Carnage goes through it too, as Dormammu developed a connection with.
