When did he ever think of me? When did either of you think of me? Richardson, for all the family. I'll answer your questions... but not with these people here.
~ Verity rebuking her parents' selfish behavior before confessing everything to Morse and Thursday.

Verity Richardson is the main antagonist in "Arcadia", the second episode in Season 3 of Endeavour. She was the best friend of Thelma Anne Davis/Ayesha, and the daughter of Leo Richardson and Annette Richardson.

She was portrayed by Gala Gordon.

Biography[]

Verity Richardson was the daughter of Leo and Annette Richardson. She once was an representation of AMNOX organization and went to Africa to participate a legal business, before she met Cuthbert Mukamba and became close with him. Shortly afterwards, however, she went back to England and discovered she was with Mukamba's child. Her parents, trying to keep up their family's reputation, sent her to an unwilling abortion.

There, Verity met with Thelma Anne Davis, also known as Ayesha, from the House Beautiful, who was also under an abortion. Through Ayesha, Verity met with Ayesha's colleague and artist Simon Hallward, and the trio colluded with each other to extort money from Verity's parents.

To enact their plan, they plotted a fake kidnapping as well as sending a threat to Leo Richardson, claiming they would put a non-lethal amount of cathartics in the products from Richardson's store. Simon recorded his recording to enact kidnapping. However, growing impatient over Leo Richardson, who refused to pay ransom money anyway, Simon went to the extreme by putting a lethal amount of poison into food products, which caused the death of a customer because of it, and even put grinded glass in baby food.

However, neither Verity nor Ayesha wanted to murder any unrelated or innocent customer through food tempering, and all they wanted was merely money, so they make a plan and blew up Simon's house when he was in his bed, killing him in the process. During the police's investigations on both Simon's murder and food tampering case, Verity and Ayesha planned their fake kidnapping with the recordings of Simon. Morse began to believe Simon was still alive and set out to rescue Verity.

With Trewlove's help, Morse and Jakes managed to locate Verity's location, which was a chalk mine. After discovering Verity inside with a time bomb near her, Jakes risked his life managed to save Verity and escort Morse out, before the bomb exploded. Fortunately, Jakes managed to survive. However, it turned out that the explosive was detonated by Ayesha (on both her and Verity's purpose), who only detonated it after seeing Morse successfully rescuing Verity from the cave to ensure Verity's safety.

After being sent to the hospital, Verity was looked after by Trewlove and received many cards from those whom she knew, but she only torn the one from Mukamba into pieces. Morse discovered this and found Mukamba, who revealed his relationship with Verity as well as what her parents had done. After further investigation on Ayesha's identity, Morse and Thursday went straight towards Verity, revealing they had learned about her past and learned about Simon being killed for real, and they needed her to confess everything.

However, their discussion was soon interrupted by Verity's parents, who discouraged Verity from confessing everything. Nevertheless, Morse had encouraged Verity to speak out, and Verity refused to obey her parents, saying all they ever tried to do was merely for the good of their family's own reputation instead of what she really wanted. Then, Verity got rid of her parents and revealed everything to Morse and Thursday, about her relationship with Ayesha and their plan in killing Simon for going too far.

Morse and Thursday returned back to the city police headquarters and delivered Verity's testimony to Bright, Strange and Jakes. In the meantime, Verity escaped from the hospital through an emergency exit. When Trewlove discovered this, she immediately reported to Bright about Verity's escape. The police soon went straight towards the House Beautiful.

Back into the House Beautiful, Verity revealed to Ayesha that Morse and Thursday had discovered the truth, and they prepared for a double suicide during the House Beautiful's lunchtime with Librium. However, Verity immediately gave up because of her fear of death, and Ayesha poisoned herself alone. When the police arrived, they found that Ayesha already collapsed and was dying. After explaining her suicidal motive to Morse, Verity could only cry in despair as Morse cradled the dying Ayesha in his arms until she slipped away.

Later, Strange delivered the news that Ayesha was dead and the police could do nothing about it. Stricken by grief, Verity revealed to Morse that she and Ayesha originally planned to use this money (extorted from her parents) to found an orphanage in Africa, before she let out a sigh. She silently accepted her arrest immediately and was taken away by Trewlove for the crimes of murder and extortion.
