Victor as the Faceless

Victor Dhorstar, also known as The Faceless, is a 16th level human rogue who is the main antagonist of the Forgotten Realms novel Masquerades, part of the Harpers series. He is the leader of the guild of thieves called the Night Masks, who secretly rule the corrupt city of Westgate.

Appearance[]

Victor is in his thirties. He is a tall and handsome man with brown hair and bright blue eyes. He dresses well, but in a non-descript manner, unless it's a special occasion.

As The Faceless, he wears black robes, white silk gloves, high boots and a magic Helm of Disguise. The helm was stolen from a temple of Leira during the Time of Troubles. It appears as a wide, fancy black hat, from which dangles a face-obscuring mist of shifting colors.

Personality[]

Victor is greedy and ambitious above all else. In order to achieve his goals, he was willing to frame his own father for crimes he committed himself. He seduced the heroine Alias, using her and then betraying her, even having some smug satisfaction in breaking the heart of the swordswoman. He is superficially charming and good at manipulating people by pretending to be a kind-hearted man.

Victor's main goal was to find Verovan's treasure. With that, he could solidy his rulership of Westgate. He wished to remake the city in his own image, with him as his sole ruler. Greed and egotism are Victor's default emotions. He'll use the feelings of other people to prey on them and further his own goals.

History[]

Victor was the son of Luer Dhostar, the wealthy lord of Westgate and leader of its mercantile families, the closest thing the city has for a stable government. Victor wasn't okay with this, however, as he realized that much more money and power could be gained through illegal means, rather than honest enterprise. For this reason, he joined the Night Masks, the powerful Thieves Guild that really ran the city. He ascended through the guild's ranks quickly, his ambition always pushing him forward. He eventually replaced the former Faceless and became the guild's leader and the shadow ruler of Westgate.

In 1367 DR, the heroes Alias and Dragonbait arrived at Westgate on a minor errand and they are ambushed by members of the Night Masks. This event aroused Alias' curiosity, as she sensed there is something rotten in the city. She hired herself to Lord Luer Dhorstar to learn all she could about the Night Masks, their leader, the mysterious Faceless, and if there are ways to defeat them. During their investigations, the two heroes met with the halfling Harper and bard Olive Ruskettle, who was aiding a mercantile house ran by halflings. Victor introduced himself into the group and grew quite close to Alias. His amulet of misdirection prevented Dragonbait's paladin powers from revealing his true alignment and motives.

In truth, Victor had arranged for his father to employ the swordswoman once he became aware of her presence in the city. As an artificial human construct, Alias is immune to magical scrying and spying, therefore, Victor knew he had to stay close to Alias in order to see that she didn't ruin his plans. After all, what better way to keep an eye on the young warrior woman than to make romantic advances to her?

Victor's goal was to find the interdimensional tomb of a wizard named Verovan. Rumors said that the wizard's treasure was acessed through somewhere hidden in the city, but Victor lacked the key to open the portal to the wizard's tomb.

Victor framed his father, making the heroes believe he was The Faceless, and Victor planned his master stroke: an attack by a group of Iron Golems against the city's mercantile leaders during a masquerade ball. It was at this ball that Victor revealed his true self to Alias.

Alias, Dragonbait, Olive and others managed to stop the Golems, but Victor found the key to Verovan's treasure and quickly headed to its hiding place, in the old wizard's tower. There, Victor and the heroes entered into another dimension and fought not only each other, but also the monsters that inhabitated the place. After much sword fighting and soul-searching, Alias defeats Victor, making him fall to his death.
