The Villengard Corporation are the main antagonists of the Doctor Who Series 14 episode Boom and the 2024 Christmas special Joy to the World.

History[]

The Villengard Corporation are the largest weapons manufacturer in the galaxy during the 51st century, selling weapons to all sides of a conflict. These include the Smartmines, and Automated Ambulance Units, which are fitted with an algorithm which maintains a "personalized casualty rate" to keep war going indefinitely, and thus an unending flow of profit. As well as this, the automated Ambulances will kill combatants whose healing would be too costly.

Boom[]

Smartmine

A Smartmine, a land mine created and sold by the Villengard weapon factories

Villengard technology was used the Anglican Marines in a war against the Kastarions. Months into the conflict, two soldiers, Carson and John Francis Vater, were killed, the former via a camouflaged landmine and the latter by the Ambulances after his temporary blindness was deemed too efficient. Immediately afterwards, the Fifteenth Doctor arrived and attempted to help, accidentally standing on another landmine. He and Ruby managed to prevent it going off immediately by him controlling his adrenaline and movement. However, the landmine would eventually go off, and take out half the planet. The Doctor managed to work out that this conflict was in fact algorithmically generated, as the Kastarions did not exist, and the Marines firing a warning shot simply began a war of attrition against their own hardware, grinding themselves down just enough to keep themselves engaged, keep the combat ongoing, and keep the money flowing to Villengard. The Doctor managed to convince an AI copy of Vater to prove the war was a falsehood, which led to all Villengard equipment shutting down, ending the war.

Joy to the World[]

Star Seed

The star seed they made that became the Star of Bethlehem.

On Christmas of 2024, Villengard sent out a briefcase containing a star seed, which will turn into an actual new star. Their goal was to use the star as a customisable and functionally infinite energy source. It was kept in a briefcase with a handcuff, anyone carrying and got cuffed would have their consciousness hijack. If the briefcase was transferred to someone else, the body of the previous holder disintegrates, but their consciousness will forever survive in the seed. Villengard thought the collateral sacrifices were necessary. However, if the seed exploded, it would kill every living thing.

The first known being of this was a human named Mr Single, he was sent to the Time Hotel, a special hotel that offered its guests the opportunity to travel to any year of Earth's history. Villengard wanted the full-fledged star to bloom in the ideal time period. The seed disintegrated Single, the hotel manager, a Silurian named Melnak, a barman, and Trev Simpkins. The briefcase soon takes control of Joy Almondo at the London-based Sandringham Hotel. After the Doctor spends a year working at the Sandringham Hotel, befriending the manager Anita Benn, he manages to obtain an override code for the briefcase via a bootstrap paradox. This allowed him to save Joy, but the briefcase soon got eaten by a Tyrannosaurus rex. It ended up in a shrine, where Joy decided that she will join the star seed and guide it into the sky. By this point, thanks to the seed's extensive travel throughout time, she and the others whose consciousness had been hijacked and absorbed had grown well beyond Villengard, leaving the resulting star far outside their control. Joy and the other people "killed" by the seed pilot it safely into space to detonate. At various points in time, the star gives hope and comfort to those who see it (including Ruby Sunday) and saves Joy's mother. The Doctor realized her name and captions showed that he was Bethlehem in 0001, revealing that the star was in fact the Star of Bethlehem.

Trivia[]

  • The Villengard Corporation was first referred to in The Doctor Dances, as where Captain Jack Harkness bought his Sonic blaster, to which the Ninth Doctor recalled destroying their weapons factories and replacing them with a banana grove. The planet Villengard would be seen in Twice Upon a Time, when it had been overrun by Daleks.
  • The Doctor ranked Kastarion 3 7/10, saying that the mountains were particularly great.
  • One of the ambulances' interfaces seen in "Boom" was later revealed to be a creation of Sutekh.
