~ Viltrum Mark's threat to Spawn/Wolf-Man, his most infamous quote. |
Markus Sebastian "Mark" Grayson, also known as "Viltrum Mark", is a minor antagonist in Invincible.
In his dimension, Viltrum Mark, became totally devoted to the Viltrum Empire, even to the point where he wore their uniform, and in his universe, he was powerful enough to slay Spawn, one of the most powerful heroes in the Image Comics universe. After he was recruited and subsequently betrayed by Angstrom Levy alongside eight other Alternate Mark Graysons, Viltrum Mark lived up to his strength and was the last one to be eaten.
Like the other Alternate Marks, he is voiced by Steven Yeun, who also played A. Traveler in The Twilight Zone, Ricky "Jupe" Park in Nope and Danny Cho in Beef.
Biography[]
Background[]
It is unknown what the point of divergence was between this Mark's life and the Mainstream's, however it can be assumed that Nolan took a less undercover approach to his early life and raising, perhaps educating him on Viltrumite culture and customs in order to secure his loyalty to the empire later on.
After an unknown series of events, Mark would fully develop his powers and became a loyal soldier to the Viltrum Empire, even donning their uniform in place of a superhero suit. In the midst of his conquer of Earth, he would even come face to face with one of Earth's mightiest heroes: Spawn. Somehow, Mark was able to kill him, possibly because this Spawn wasn't as powerful as his mainstream counterpart.
Invincible War[]
Viltrum Mark was recruited by the mainstream Angstrom Levy to ruin the reputation of the Mark Grayson of his dimension and, in exchange, Levy would help him expand his Empire across all dimensions. Naturally, he accepted the offer and was among the wave of 20 Alternate Mark Graysons that stormed the mainstream Image Comics universe.
On the second day of the invasion, Viltrum Mark came across another Spawn (presumably Jim Downings, who was the active Spawn around the time of publishing). Viltrum Mark announced that he had already killed him back on his dimension, and that he was ready to do it again. While this confrontation goes unseen, both combatants were shown to be alive by the end of the Invincible War, presumably meaning that Viltrum Mark bailed before things escalated.
During the final day, Viltrum Mark was seen in shame, hovering in his old home town, Chicago which was destroyed. Levy calls for a regroup over the Grayson's home. Once there, Viltrum Mark notices that he was nowhere around, only for Levy to show up through a portal seconds later saying that he prefers to make dramatic entrances. Levy asks the Marks for one last favor: to bring the Mark Grayson of this world and let him disfigure him as retribution. Instead Sinister rebukes saying they must move on or they'll kill him. Angstrom, disappointed at how they could see through his plan, pushes the remaining Marks into portals to a Wasteland dimension, leaving them to fend for themselves.
Ultimate Fate[]
As the days turned into weeks, the stranded Marks grew hungrier and hungrier. Acknowledging that without Angstrom they're effectively stuck in a dead universe, they realized that they would soon die. One Mark suggested that they might as well start eating each other to satiate their hunger, possibly using the Viltrumite custom of destroying the weak exhibited during the Great Purge as a point of reference. The other Marks, including Viltrum Mark and Mohawk Mark, begrudgingly agreed and attacked an unknown Mark that they all found annoying.
Eventually, only three Marks remained - Sinister Mark, Mohawk Mark (who went into hiding after the first one was killed) and Viltrum Mark. In a final altercation to survive, Viltrum Mark was ultimately defeated and cannibalized by Sinister Mark. It is suggested that Viltrum Mark had called Sinister out and blamed him of planning their deaths, given how the idea was still fresh on his mind by the time Mainstream Mark shows up.
