I'VE KILLED YOU BEFORE AND I'LL KILL YOU AGAIN!
~ Viltrumite Invincible's threat to Spawn[1]/Wolf-Man[2], his most infamous quote.

Markus "Mark" Sebastian Grayson, also known as Viltrumite Invincible, is a minor antagonist in the Image Comics comic series Invincible, and its animated adaptation of the same name.

In his dimension, Viltrumite Invincible, became totally devoted to the Viltrum Empire, even to the point where he wore their uniform, and in his universe, he was powerful enough to slay Spawn, one of the most powerful heroes in the Image Comics universe. After he was recruited and subsequently betrayed by Angstrom Levy alongside eight other Evil Invincibles, Viltrumite Invincible lived up to his strength and was the last one to be eaten.

Like the other Alternate Invincibles, he is voiced by Steven Yeun, who also played A. Traveler in The Twilight Zone, Ricky "Jupe" Park in Nope and Danny Cho in Beef.

Appearance[]

Almost the same as the original counterpart, except his hair bangs are a bit extended, Viltrumite Invincible does not have full bags underneath his eyes. Viltrumite Invincible also wields the default uniform of the Viltrum Empire (albeit with two of the empire's logos on the shoulders), showcasing his full allegiance to the empire.

Personality[]

Viltrumite Invincible, much like the other evil Invincibles, willingly participated in the invincible war, showing a disturbing lack of care for the death and destruction he inflicted. He is shown as sadistic and bloodthirsty when it comes to fighting, both in various comic panels and in the show, and, similar to other Viltrumites, he believes that strength is above all.

Despite these deplorable traits, this variant differs slightly from his peers by showing some semblances of a conscience, being that he likely wholeheartedly believes the Viltrum Empire's goals are righteous, and that they will protect humanity should they be assimilated into the empire. Interestingly, while some panels depict him with a bloodthirsty expression, other panels and frames, such as his introduction, show him more somber and downcast. He also visibly reacted when Full Masked Invincible voiced his regrets, showing his sadism is widescale, but not absolute.

Biography[]

Background[]

It is unknown what the point of divergence was between this Invincible's life and the Mainstream's, however it can be assumed that Nolan took a less undercover approach to his early life and raising, perhaps educating him on Viltrumite culture and customs in order to secure his loyalty to the empire later on, or that Nolan did not call Debbie a pet and Invincible sided with him, believing his goals were righteous, and helped conquer the earth, entering Viltrumite ranks.

After an unknown series of events, Invincible would fully develop his powers and became a loyal soldier to the Viltrum Empire, even donning their uniform in place of a superhero suit. In the midst of his conquer of Earth, he would even come face to face with one of Earth's mightiest heroes: Spawn. Somehow, Invincible was able to kill him, possibly because this Spawn wasn't as powerful as his mainstream counterpart.

Invincible War[]

Viltrumite Invincible was recruited by the mainstream Angstrom Levy to ruin the reputation of the Invincible of his dimension and, in exchange, Levy would help him expand his Empire across all dimensions. Naturally, he accepted the offer and was among the wave of 20 Evil Invincibles that stormed the mainstream Image Comics universe.

On the second day of the invasion, Viltrumite Invincible came across another Spawn (presumably Jim Downings, who was the active Spawn around the time of publishing). Viltrumite Invincible announced that he had already killed him back on his dimension, and that he was ready to do it again. While this confrontation goes unseen, both combatants were shown to be alive by the end of the Invincible War, presumably meaning that Viltrumite Invincible bailed before things escalated. Moreover, Viltrumite Invincible lacks any visible green blood/Necroplasm spatters on his body, implying that he couldn't significantly harm Spawn.

During the final day, Viltrumite Invincible was seen in shame, hovering in his old home town, Chicago which was destroyed. Levy calls for a regroup over the Grayson's home. Once there, Viltrumite Invincible notices that he was nowhere around, only for Levy to show up through a portal seconds later saying that he prefers to make dramatic entrances. Levy asks the Invincibles for one last favor: to bring the Invincible of this world and let him disfigure him as retribution. Instead Sinister rebukes saying they must move on or they'll kill him. Angstrom, disappointed at how they could see through his plan, pushes the remaining Invincibles into portals to a Wasteland dimension, leaving them to fend for themselves.

Ultimate Fate[]

As the days turned into weeks, the stranded Invincibles grew hungrier and hungrier. Acknowledging that without Angstrom they're effectively stuck in a dead universe, they realized that they would soon die. One Invincible suggested that they might as well start eating each other to satiate their hunger, possibly using the Viltrumite custom of destroying the weak exhibited during the Great Purge as a point of reference. The other Invincibles, including Viltrumite Invincible and Mohawk Invincible, begrudgingly agreed and attacked an unknown Invincible that they all found annoying.

Eventually, only three Evil Invincibles remained - Sinister Invincible, Mohawk Invincible (who went into hiding after the first one was killed) and Viltrumite Invincible. In a final altercation to survive, Viltrumite Invincible was ultimately defeated and cannibalized by Sinister Invincible. It is suggested that Viltrumite Invincible had called Sinister out and blamed him of planning their deaths, given how the idea was still fresh on his mind by the time Mainstream Invincible shows up.

Trivia[]

  • The Viltrumite uniform this Invincible wears has a few differences with the mainstream one, mainly the two symbols around his arm.
  • In a interview around early 2010s, a fan asked Ryan Ottley to draw Viltrumite Invincible killing Spawn.
  • Since Spawn did not appear in the Amazon Prime series due to his character rights belonging to Todd McFarlane, he was instead replaced by the Astounding Wolf-Man.
