~ Vilu Daskar. |
Vilu Daskar is an antagonist in the Redwall book The Legend of Luke, and is the main antagonist of Part 2 of the story. He is a pirate stoat who terrorizes the north coast and routinely enslaves and massacres innocent creatures.
History[]
He is the captain of the ship Goreleech, and frequently invades woodland settlements and enslaves whoever he feels is strong enough to work with Bullflay being the sadistic slavemaster in charge of them. One day he comes to the north coast for repairs, but notices the tribe of Luke the Warrior, who have lit large fires during a celebration. Vilu deems them too weak to make slaves out of, but leads his crew in massacring the tribe "for fun", personally murdering Luke's wife Sayna. This causes a devastated Luke to swear vengeance against him, and he sets out in his own ship to find him.
Vilu later attacks another settlement and captures a maddened squirrel, Ranguvar Foeseeker, who he tries to break. He also executes one of his crew for holding back plunder. Ranguvar is chained below deck and learns of Vilu's sadistic treatment of his slaves, as when they grow too weak to work he makes them walk the plank, and they either drown or are eaten by the big fishes. Vilu later discovers Luke is pursuing him so he ambushes him, destroying Luke's ship and killing most of the crew, but Luke and two other mice are captured. Thinking fast, Luke makes up a story about there being treasure on the north coast and says only he knows the location so Vilu must keep him alive.
Vilu later finds that Luke's friends are sneaking onboard and stealing supplies, so he orders his crew to find the thieves. He also finds some unrelated thefts that were committed by his crew, so he has them brutally flogged and then orders their wounds splashed with salt water.
When Luke will not tell him where the treasure is, Vilu orders him to steer the ship to its location and shackles him to the anchor. This was Luke's plan as he hoped to guide the ship back to his home so his tribe could come to the rescue, but the plan backfires as his tribe have come under attack by Badrang and left the area. In desperation, Luke resolves to run the ship into the rocks, and has a ferocious fight with Vilu, who stabs him lethally, but Luke succeeds in wrecking the ship, which splits in half and sinks, killing both him and Vilu.
