~ Roeg's last words before being dragged to the underworld by the innocent women he murdered. |
Vincent Roeg is the main antagonist of the 2024 gothic superhero action film The Crow, based on the 1989 comic book series of the same name by James O'Barr.
In his characterisation, he is a demonic crime lord who has immortality through killing innocent people for his own selfish gains. He is also Eric Draven’s arch-nemesis after murdering him and his girlfriend Shelly.
He was portrayed by Danny Huston, who also played Marlow Roderick in 30 Days of Night, William Stryker in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Victor Maynott in A Monster in Paris, King Richard I in the 2010 Robin Hood film, The Axeman in American Horror Story: Coven, Erich Ludendorff in Wonder Woman and Wade Jennings in Angel Has Fallen.
Biography[]
Vincent Roeg was born “centuries” ago, leaving his exact age unknown. When he was younger, he made a deal with the devil. In exchange for immortality, Roeg would be tasked with corrupting innocent people so that they would go to Hell when they die and Roeg complied. And to aid him in his mission, the devil gifted him the ability to control the minds of humans through vocal commands, and make them do horrible things.
Several centuries later, Roeg has obtained everything he has ever wanted; a massive criminal empire, vast resources and wealth as well as a near limitless supply of goons for hire to do his bidding. A while later, he met a young singer and band member named Shelly Webster and her band member friends. Thinking of them as the perfect candidates to corrupt, Roeg invited them to a party he threw. There, he used his demonic mind control on Shelly, and ordered her to stab her friend. This caused Shelly and her friends to go on the run from Roeg out of fear of him; and cause Roeg and his troops to hunt them down.
After months of searching, the friends finally got caught one by one, and killed by Roeg himself. Shelly would have been killed as well if it weren’t for Eric Draven saving Shelly. It wouldn’t last long however, as Roeg’s men caught them again, and this time Shelly and Eric were both killed. Thinking that was the end of it, Roeg carried on with his happy immortal life; unaware that Eric’s soul underwent a transformation, which granted him the power to defeat death itself. Upon learning of this, Roeg was desperate to capture Eric so he could steal his abilities.
After Eric killed all of Roeg’s right hand woman and all of his remaining henchmen, Roeg awaited for Eric at his mansion. Thereupon he used his demonic mind control to distract Eric long enough to siphon his power. For a moment, it worked; until Eric’s love for Shelly helped him snap out of it, which resulted in Roeg losing control over Eric’s powers. Angered by this, Roeg attempted to kill Eric once and for all, only to be tackled out of his mansion and into the world between the living and the dead.
By then, the devil had seen enough of Roeg’s failures and sent his demons to claim Roeg’s soul itself. Roeg pleaded with Eric to save him claiming he had no idea what kind of hell awaited him. Eric assured him he did, and beat Roeg senselessly before he then watched as Roeg was dragged down to Hell by the people he corrupted and murdered over the years and remained for all eternity.
Personality[]
Roeg was nothing but a greedy, arrogant, ruthless, sadistic, violent and outright dangerous man who would stop at nothing to have the power to live forever and let nothing stand in his way. He showed no care for his associates, as he did not even flinch upon learning that Eric slaughtered them all; proving Roeg did not have a high regard for human life. His immoral compass and selfishness would ultimately lead him to die, as he failed to not only damn Eric to Hell as per his agreement with the devil, but also sought out an alternate way to gain immortality by stealing Eric’s power, perhaps something that the devil saw as a breach of contract, which shows Roeg was also a liar and a cheater. But according to Marion, Vincent had a look in his eyes that showed he hated everything about himself; likely proving there was a small amount of humanity left inside of Roeg after all.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Immortality: As per his agreement with the devil, Roeg became an immortal man; this involved being able to live for centuries without growing old, getting sick and even avoid dying.
- Mind control: The devil gave Roeg the power to control human minds through vocal commands, and make them do bad things.
- Corruption inducement: Roeg’s job on earth was to corrupt people so that they would go to Hell when they died. To make it easier for him, the devil gave him the ability to induce madness and corruption in people. But according to Roeg, he could not make people go mad out of thin air. He had to amplify the darkness that was already within people.
- Intimidation: Everybody feared Roeg greatly, his associates, his targets and even his right hand woman. They all knew what Vincent was capable of, and dared not to step out of line, knowing what would happen to them if they did.
- Skilled hand-to-hand combatant: With the aid of his dagger, Roeg was skilled in hand-to-hand combat as shown during his final confrontation with Eric. However, due to Roeg still being able to die and Eric not, Roeg was overpowered by Eric and killed by both him and the demons he made a deal with.
Trivia[]
- Danny Huston was originally cast as Vincent Roeg in 2015 but dropped out of the film due to scheduling conflicts. Production languished for more than six and a half years, allowing Huston to return to play the character as he was now available.
- Like Eric Draven, there are differences between Vincent Roeg and the antagonist Top Dollar from the 90’s Crow movie. For one, Top Dollar’s true name is unknown whilst Vincent is referred to by his name and doesn’t have an alias he goes by. And for another, Vincent has demonic powers after making a deal with the devil, while Top Dollar is just an average crime lord.
