Gognitti was a highstrung whiner on the verge of breaking apart like an overamped Energizer bunny. He had the brains to run the business but he lacked the balls, always falling short, taking his frustration out on under-aged addicts and call girls.
~ Max Payne describing Vinnie Gognitti.
Payne? Freakin' Fed! I knew from day one there was somethin' screwy 'bout you! Waddya think yer doin'? Yer a freakin' cop. Ya ain't got squat on us. Ya can't just come in here wavin' yer piece like it meant somethin'--
~ Vinnie face to face with Max in his office before he is shot.

Vincent "Vinnie" Gognitti is a supporting antagonist in the Max Payne video game series. He is a mafia Caporegime and later underboss of the Punchinello Crime Family.

He is voiced by Joe Dallo and performed by the Finnish guitarist of Poets of the Fall, Olli Tukiainen in the first game. In Max Payne 2, he was voiced by Fred Berman (who also voiced Vincent Tuzzi in True Crime: New York City) and performed by Stephen Gregory.

Biography[]

His background is unknown, but, according to Max Payne, Vinnie was a whiner and coward who runs away from any situation. When he was without hope, he begged for his life, crying like a baby.

Vinnie had the brains to run the Punchinello family's business, but he always lost control. He would take out his enormous frustration on underage addicts and call girls. Vinnie was mortally afraid of his boss, Jack Lupino. Due to addictions to the drug Valkyr, Jack went crazy, killing his own men, causing Vinnie to stay away from his own boss.

Vinnie sent a letter to the Finito Brothers about the V deal, and that Rico Muerte, a hitman, is coming to Lupino's Hotel. He warned them that if anything went wrong, everyone would be killed, including the Finitos.

Valkyr Case[]

During these events, Vinnie suffered an attack from the Russian Mob, commanded by Vladimir Lem, while he was hiding in one of Lupino's rental buildings. This was because of a war Punchinello was plotting with the Russians. Max finds a letter from him saying that the Russians only had weapons left, and that they could be bought. Max had his first face-to-face confrontation with Vinnie in his office. Vinnie was shot in the stomach by Max, causing him to run away. Gognitti jumped on top of a train in an attempt to escape from Max. However, Max jumped on another train, chasing Gognitti. While he was escaping, he ordered all his men to kill Max, even as they continuously failed.

Vinnie confronted Max, but lost all his breath, causing him to fall to the ground in despair. Max then interrogated Vinnie where Jack Lupino was. Vinnie then cowered, and he told Max that Lupino was hiding in Ragna Rock, a nightclub. Vinnie cried and begged Max for him to be arrested and taken to jail. After the chase, it is unknown what happened to Vinnie afterwards. It is possible he had informed Punchinello about Max's whereabouts at the Ragna Rock nightclub.

Cleaner Case[]

After the events of Max Payne, Vinnie was now an underboss of the mafia after Lupino's death. Against the Punchinello boss’ wishes, Vinnie and his henchmen attacked Vladimir Lem's restaurant Vodka, formerly the Ragna Rock night club. Max arrived at the scene, and realized that the restaurant had been attacked, Max went through the back door, killing all of Gognitti's men, making Vinnie flee the restaurant while the NYPD arrived at the scene.

Vladimir explained to Max that the Cleaner hitmen were Vinnie's henchmen (In reality, they were Vlad's men; Lem lied to Max as a distraction). Max suspected Vinnie was linked to the Cleaners who killed Annie Finn and selling illegal firearms.

Mob War and Death[]

Max visited Alfred Woden. It was here where Woden revealed that Vladimir Lem was the one behind everything going on around them, and that the Cleaners were Vlad's own men. Max decided to go to Vodka again to confront Vlad, but he was not there, though he did find a diagram of a Captain Baseball Bat Boy costume, indicating that Vinnie is in trouble. A mob war started between the Punchinellos and Vladimir's men on Roscoe Street, and due to Vinnie's actions and arrogance, the Punchinello boss refused to send reinforcements to Vinnie, making him a useless coward without help.

Max decided to go to Vinnie and found him trapped in the Captain Baseball Bat Boy costume. Vinnie informed Max that the costume has a bomb, and that Vinnie needed help. He made a deal with Max to help kill Vladimir. Eventually, Max and Vinnie finally managed to escape from Vlad's men. Max said he would take him to Mona Sax's hiding place, as Max didn't know how to defuse a bomb, but Vinnie insisted that Mona is a psychopath like Vladimir. As soon as they arrived at Mona's hideout however, they discovered that Vlad was waiting for them both.

Vlad ordered Max to put down his weapons, and after a conversation between the two, Max was shot in the head. As soon as Vlad leftthe place, he activated the detonator, blowing up Vinnie's suit, which ended up killing him instantly. Mona would later find Vinnie's remains, mourning him.

Legacy[]

After his death, Vinnie's remains were buried in Golgotha Cemetery, and because of his death and his actions, the Punchinello crime family became much weaker as the years passed, leaving open a power vacuum that Anthony DeMarco and his crime family would fill as time went on.

Personality[]

Vinnie Gognitti was a man with an extremely childish personality. When his men didn't do what Vinnie said, he screamed like a spoiled child. Vinnie had a very irritating, ridiculous and laughable voice, Gognitti always lost control when a call girl called him, and he had a dangerous frustration towards underage addicts. On at least one occasion, he had a session with a prostitute that ended with him assaulting her.

During the Valkyr case, Vinnie had a fear of Jack Lupino due to his addiction to Valkyr, since Jack killed one of Vinnie's men, Dino. While he was chased by Max, Vinnie had extremely poor aim. Despite his bluster, Vinnie's true persona was that he was a coward, a whiner who ran away from any situation, even in an intense firefight. During the rooftop chase in New York neighborhoods, Vinnie cowardly begged Max to be taken to jail. In Vinnie's last moments, he cried as Vlad psychologically tortured him on Max's nightmare sequence.

Trivia[]

  • EbHzFGXVcBEPGTL

The early versions of Vinnie Gognitti. Note that he was supposed to be the boss battle in Ragna Rock, and he was also the old version of Jack Lupino.

In the early alpha versions of Max Payne, Vinnie Gognitti was supposed to be a Valkyr addict, insane and a cruel Satanist and also the boss was going to take place in the Ragna Rock nightclub, but Remedy scrapped this idea, and then, Jack Lupino becomes the Valkyr addict and a insane, as Vinnie is a coward and childish.
  • Vinnie Gognitti is huge fan of Captain Baseball Bat Boy. This is confirmed in the chapter "Dearest of All My Friends". In his apartment, he has a lot of Captain Baseball Bat Boy memorabilia, alongside with Frankie Niagara.
    • If Max destroys one of Vinnie's collector's itmes, he becomes furious with Max for destroying his favorite superhero character's collection.
  • Vinnie is the second antagonist who was not killed by Max Payne, the first was Angelo Punchinello who was killed by Nicole Horne's henchmen, the second was Vinnie. Then, it was Arthur Fischer, killed at the hands of Serrano.
  • Vinnie appears as a playable character in Max Payne 3 Multiplayer's Classic Character Pack DLC, alongside with Mona Sax, Vladimir Lem, Nicole Horne, Valerie Winderson, Alfred Woden and Jack Lupino.
  • Vinnie is the only redeemed villain in Max Payne series.
  • At the end of the chapter "Dearest of All My Friends", somehow, Vinnie knows the Inner Circle, as when Max takes Vinnie to Mona Sax's hideout to try and defuse the bomb that is in Vinnie's costume, Vinnie states that Mona Sax and Vladimir Lem are "part of the same group."
