| ~ The Violator's famous catchphrase. |
The Violator, also known as the Clown in his human disguise, is one of the main antagonists of Image Comic's Spawn franchise.
He is the one of the primary archenemies of the titular character. who also serves as a member of the Phlebiac Brothers, a group of half-demons born to human mothers, who are under the service of Malebolgia, Mammon, Lucifer, and even Satan himself. His true form is that of a demon, but he prefered the appearance of a morbidly obese clown.
In issues #294 and #295, it is revealed that he had been the designer and creator of the Hellspawns' suits and powers, with Al Simmons being the most recent since the first Hellspawn. He is also the one who killed Wanda, Al's former wife, just to get more power. He is also now the commander of the demons on earth usurping his former master's place. He later loses this status after Sinn defeats him in issue#350, and his remains are used by Nyx for her throne as the Queen of Hell.
Appearance[]
Violator as a clown initially resembled an obese short man with blue face paint and balding hair. In his true form, he is a large albeit slim demon. The cambion soon received an upgrade in which both his forms are now either taller, more muscular and far more imposing. His human state is either wearing a suit with longer hair in a ponytail, whilst his demon shape stands more muscular and studded with spikes than his previous form.

Personality[]
The Violator is a psychotic, cruel, depraved and sadistic demon who looks down on humans and wants true demons to lead the armies of hell. He is ambitious, treacherous, and manipulative. He is also quite perverted towards women. Violator sees murder, torture and depravity as forms of entertainment and holds humanity in contempt; feeling true demons like himself are superior beings. This in part fuels his particularly brutal interactions with Spawn: who he is sworn to serve but still holds in extreme contempt for formerly being human.
Biography[]
The Violator is one of Spawn's most recurring and vicious opponents. Being a mentor of sorts to the Hellspawn, he is an arrogant and cruel entity with a sadistic sense of humor, that delights in the pain of others. While naturally a gigantic monster he often takes the disguise of an obese clown when interacting with the mortal realm, hence earned his alter ego of "The Clown".
Violator would team up with Bludd to take control of JIm Downing and later fought his former master Malebolgia who has been revived.
After Al Simmons returns, he was stuck in his clown form for quite sometime after Jim Drowning's time as Spawn and he later teams up with Simmons to get power. But unknown to Simmons, he still had his ability to shapeshift. In later issues he is seen plotting something and had a hand in Wanda's death. In the recent issues, (specifically #294 and #295) it's revealed that Violator was the one who designed Spawn's suit along with every other Hellspawn's symbiotes. Hence why he watches over them Malebolgia simply took the credit. He has been killed multiple times, each time to be returned to Hell and reanimated by his master, or on his own.
There was one arc where he possessed a man and had corrupted people into become deranged clowns have them kill each other and tried to have the survivors attack Spawn. Violator was defeated in 295 and appears in 296-297 in the recap. He also had possessed Jason Wynn one time and later possessed many people to attack Spawn. After Spawn reset the universe after the Armageddon arc Violator possesses on new form and attack Spawn once more.
During the Jim Dowing Era, he teamed up with a vampire called Bludd to take control of Jim Dowing and take Malebolgia's place and to make a new unholy trinity. After Simmons returns he offers Violator to help him get to Hell to save Wanda in exchange to get his powers back but it's revealed that Violator still retained enough power he simply wanted more. In issues 290, 293, 295 and 298, it's revealed that Violator now possess as a politician and discusses Gabreille about Spawn and how he had a hand in Spawn's anger. In 299 and 300 it is revealed that Violator was the one who killed Wanda and thanks to Spawn empowering him had now evolved to a point as his demon form had bulked up. He is also the commander of the demons on earth and in 301 Spawn destroys Violator and Godsend with a nuke.
Violator shows up in 302 where he warns Jessica Priest to give up her powers and return them to hell. Violator also appears in a couple of spin-offs. Violator appeared in the Badrock vs Violator crossover mini series alongside his brothers and in spawn the dark ages. He was also made a cameo in adventures of spawn alongside his brothers and appeared in the mini series Spawn Kills Everyone. Violator makes a return in the Gunslinger Spawn series where he showcases his newfound ability to create an army of his clones in his Classic image. It is also revealed the necroplasmic explosion from Spawn 301 also caused Violator to absorb some of it and made him split into two beings - his Clown and Violators forms - at will and fought Gunslinger Spawn. He later returns in the King Spawn series using his classic form to hide his recent evolution in power from the others.
In the events for the throne of Hell, Violator faces both Spawn and Cogliostro (the latter now known as Sinn) for the fight over who will reign over Hell itself. Eventually, Violator was decapitated by Sinn and Nyx takes over Hell by killing Sinn using Violator's remains for her throne.
In the second six-issue miniseries, Violator tells the reader of his "true" origins. He claims to have once been an Angel named Baziel, who sided with Lucifer and went down to Hell, which led into his demonic transformation into the Violator. He had a mate named Glorina, an angel from Heaven and remains bitter over his loss. He would deal with Viking Spawn as well as the other angels and demons. He also encounters and possesses Grigori Rasputin, proceeding to perform debaucherous, depraved and horrific acts while using him as a human host. However, it is stated that he is an unreliable narrator, so the authenticity of his tales are extremely dubious and likely fabricated given that it majorly contradicts his long-established background as a hellborn half-demon borne from a human woman that was impregnated by his demonic father, along with the rest of his six siblings.

He was known by the nickname Double K. After promising his sister to be with her for her birthday, Ken is murdered by clients. Seven years later, Ken is brought back as a Hellspawn. (It is heavily implied that Ken returned to Earth at the exact same time as did Al Simmons, as many events parallel events in the original comic). Like Al Simmons, Kurosawa initially has no memories and is confronted almost immediately after awakening by the Clown. Clown briefly leaves the manga, replaced by a faerie-like creature calling herself Beelzebub. He returns as the Violator

Call of Duty[]
The Violator appears in both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Call of Duty: War Zone as a skin for multiplayer both for his clown and demon forms.
Powers and Abilities[]
The Violator is one of Spawn's most common and recurring enemies; having displayed incredible superhuman strength, speed, stamina, agility and durability with a powerful healing factor both in and out of human & demon form. Being a cambion of moderate standing. Clown is also an avid shape-changer, able to morph from his original demon form to a stumpy, portly human shape he uses to blend in on the mortal plane at will. He can manipulate Hellfire in the form of firebreath or projectile, and is highly skilled in the art of demonic magic. The Phlebiac is also cunning and manipulative towards people, being a master tactician on par with Simmons himself and thanks to these manipulations.
Having tricked Al into giving him more power than he originally possessed numerous times, Clown gained a significant ability increase through his machinations. This enabled him to possess countless people while hosting an individual body. Even morphing said vessels into his primary monster shape at will.
After another encounter with the wayward hell general, Clown had bulked up considerably to a much more physically imposing form. Both his human and Violator state have been vastly augmented to incredible extremes. His recent jaunt through time has given him the ability to make off-shoots of himself which stand as manifestations of his prior shapes and forms. Now, he can be both Clown and the Violator while commanding a sizable enclave that is enslaved to his will. He can also manipulate ionic energy to engulf a target in a field of pulverizing shockwaves or destroy a human by merely increasing the vibrational frequency in their bodies.
Trivia[]
- Violator is based on the Joker from Batman. Both are the archenemy to their respective protagonists and Violator even has gotten an identity called Joseph C. Kurr. There are notable differences, as Joker is obsessed with Batman due to their conflicting ideologies and wishes to prove that he is just as corrupt as himself. Violator simply despises Spawn and wanted to lead Hell's army or torment him because of his inferiority complex towards the latter.
- Interestingly, Violator and Spawn appear in Mortal Kombat 11, where Joker also appear as a guest villain, and as expected, he expresses deep hate towards the Clown Prince because he reminds him of Violator.
- Violator has appeared in the most issues than any other Spawn villain making him the most recurring villain in the series with the second being Jason Wynn and the third being Malebolgia.
- Iced Earth made a Spawn album that features a song, Violate, based on the character.
- Violator was listed on IGN's Top 100 Greatest Comic book Villains Of All Time in the 97th slot. He is the only villain in the Spawn franchise to do so.
- As revealed in Scorched issue #25, Violator's repulsive human form is actually a curse that Malebolgia placed on him as punishment after he was defeated by Medieval Spawn and failed to rein him in as his newest General of Hell. The animated series version of Clown/Violator also mentioned that his iconic human form was forced on him for displeasing his master(presumably for the same failure). His current human appearance (after absorbing Spawn's power) is likely what he originally looked like.
- His current human appearance was stated by Todd Mcfarlane to be based on Kingpin.
- Violator is considered the mascot villain of Spawn. He has the most reoccurring appearances out of Spawn's entire rogue gallery. He also starred in two mini-series, has appeared in several adaptations and consistently received substantial merchandising from the creator since his appearance in the early 1990s, making him the most iconic character besides Al Simmons himself. The only other villains who come close are Jason Wynn, Malebolgia, Cogliostro, Mammon, Redeemer, and Nyx.
