~ Vlad Tepes to Guts while transforming into a monster |
Vlad Tepes is the main antagonist of Berserk: The Prototype, a rough-draft for the series that would become Berserk.
A cruel and merciless ruler, Vlad Tepes is a human who was granted supernatural and demonic powers by the enigmatic Vuana in exchange for fealty. He took delight in abducting and killing young females in his castle, an act which eventually brought him at odds with the wandering demon-killer Guts.
Biography[]
The one known as Vlad Tepes was once a human ruler of a fiefdom before coming into contact with the demonic ruler Vuana, to which he apparently made a deal with them granting himself unholy powers in exchange for his servitude.
As a demon, Vlad Tepes went to war with another neighboring country, resulting in him taking over five-hundred prisoners. To instill fear into the hearts of his enemies, Vlad impaled the corpses of these prisoners along the border of his fiefdom, regardless if they were priests, women, or children. He ordered for them not to be removed.
Years later, as the lord ran out of enemies, Vlad Tepes began to lash his sadism at his subjects. He grew to have a habit of gathering up and butchering young maidens in his castle, a rumor that was reinforced when a corpse of such a maiden was discovered in the moat of the castle, skewered from head to torso.
Eventually, the lord began to request for handmaids to add to his collection, among which was a girl named Frikka. This girl would be rescued by a wandering mercenary named Guts, who would be informed of Vlad Tepes’ existence. As Frikka resigned herself to be taken back to the lord’s castle, she was followed by Guts, who noticed that the lordly emblem on the carriage she was being taken in was that of the brand of Vuana.
Frikka would encounter the lord, who began to marvel at her beauty as he told her to approach him. However, Frikka noticed that he was beginning to confort into something less than human as he caressed her, preparing to hurt her. However, an arrow would strike Vlad Tepes in the eye, revealed to be by Guts.
Marveling at this human’s boldness, Vlad Tepes removed the arrow from his eye and stepped forward, to which another arrow found itself lodged in his throat.
The lord retaliated by throwing numerous spears at Guts with telekinesis, to which he survived, confounding Vlad Tepes. Guts removed a spear lodged in his abdomen and pointed his abnormally long sword at the lord in defiance, referring to him as a “dog of Vuana”. This enraged Vlad Tepes who demanded to know how a human like himself could possibly know of their name while transforming into his demon form. Guts lunges at the demonic lord, only to be caught by his massive hand.
Laughing, the lord crushes Guts and mocks him for his failure, only to be fired at by Guts’ secret cannon-arm, causing a portion of his head to be blown off. As Guts fell to the ground, he immediately finished off a dazed Vlad Tepes with a strike through his abdomen via his long sword. As the lord lay dying, he contemplated on how a mere human was able to beat the likes of him, only to notice that Guts, having his shirt burned, had the brand of Vuana on his chest. Before he could properly react, a large piece of debris from his now-collapsing castle fell upon him, killing him once and for all.
Trivia[]
- His appearance mirrors that of of the Slug Baron’s, a villain introduced in the beginning of the official canon of the series.
- His name and his habit for impalement are based off of that of historical figure Vlad III Tepes, ruler of Wallachia and the inspiration for Dracula.
