Am I alone? I am not alone... My friends, my brothers, I want to be whole...
~ Void

Void is the main antagonist of the party game Sonic Shuffle.

He is one of the two halves (alongside Lumina Flowlight) of the Goddess of Dreams and Maginaryworld's ruler, Illumina, and wants to obtain the ancient Precioustone to become whole again after being shattered from his whole self. He soon faces Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends in the game's main events, having been sent by Lumina to re-obtain the Precioustones and restore the Perfect Precioustone.

He was voiced by Urara Takano in Japanese, and Lani Minella (who also voiced Rouge the Bat, Larry Koopa and Wendy O. Koopa in the Super Mario franchise, Sheeva and Sindel in Mortal Kombat (2011), and Ivy Valentine in Soulcallibur III) in English.

Personality[]

Void is a truly unique character among the villains in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Rather than being portrayed as a purely malicious being, he is presented as a tragic figure driven by a genuine desire to overcome his own emptiness, rather than seeking power, control, revenge, or destruction. On the surface, Void appears as a young boy with a distant gaze, showing no signs of emotion. However, underneath this facade, Void constantly battles with intense loneliness due to his separation, which leaves him in a perpetual state of sadness and depression.

His only wish is to heal himself and become friends with Lumina, as a means to escape his pain. Unfortunately, due to his nature, Void is rejected by everything and everyone, causing his sadness to deepen to the point where he questions his own existence. In moments of reflection, he speaks to himself and expresses his profound emotions, which are tinged with a sense of sadness.

Because he embodies negative emotions, Void tends to have a destructive impact on dreams and causes chaos wherever he goes. However, it is important to note that he does not have any malicious intentions and only engages in such behavior due to his inherent nature and lack of understanding. Instead of simply shattering people's dreams for no reason, his aim is to challenge them and help them grow stronger by exposing them to despair. Therefore, he does not perceive his actions as harmful and denies any responsibility for causing misfortune.

Similarly, he struggles to comprehend why people dislike him for his actions, which has led him to slightly resent others whom he believes are needlessly tormenting and betraying him.

Biography[]

Past[]

Void came into existence as a result of Illumina losing touch with herself and her aspirations, leading to a deep inner conflict that divided her into two distinct entities: Void, embodying the negative aspects of dreams, and Lumina Flowlight, embodying the positive aspects. This separation left Void feeling profoundly alone and desiring to reunite with his other half. Realizing that he was a fragment of the Precioustone, a crucial element necessary for dreams to thrive, Void embarked on a quest to find this precious crystal, believing it would restore his wholeness. Upon arriving at the Temple of Light and coming into contact with the Perfect Precioustone, however, Void's immense powers caused the crystal to shatter, its fragments scattering across the diverse worlds within Maginaryworld.

Sonic Shuffle[]

Following the destruction of the Precioustone, Void proceeded to extend his influence over the entirety of Maginaryworld, using his powers to alter the various dream worlds within it. In his relentless pursuit of the remaining Precioustones, Void hoped that they would be able to restore his shattered being. However, his quest was met with resistance from a group consisting of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, who had been summoned to Maginaryworld by Lumina. Lumina sought their assistance in recovering the Precioustones and restoring the Perfect Precioustone.

Despite Void managing to outpace Sonic and his friends in obtaining the Precioustones, his touch only caused them to break further, leaving him with no choice but to retreat. Each time Sonic and his friends successfully retrieved a Precioustone, Void would appear before them alongside Lumina in a vision, where he would express his profound feelings of sadness and isolation.

As the construction of the Precioustone drew closer to its final stages within the sacred walls of the Temple of Light, Void felt a strong urge to venture there and once again lay his eyes upon the mystical crystal. Upon entering the temple, his presence was immediately met with the formidable presence of Lumina, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy. Void, burdened by his constant yearning to be whole once more, pleaded for their assistance in attaining this unattainable desire through the power of the Precioustone. However, his heartfelt pleas were met with rejection after rejection, as the group remained steadfast in their belief that they could manage without him.

The weight of this rejection, coupled with the overwhelming sense of loneliness and sadness that had long plagued him, finally reached its breaking point. In a fit of uncontrollable rage and despair, Void underwent a terrifying transformation, morphing into a monstrous being that threatened to unleash havoc upon all in its path.

During the intense battle, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy joined forces and emerged victorious over Void, transforming him into a precious gem. As Void bemoaned his rejection by both Illumina and Lumina, Sonic and his friends intervened, persuading Lumina to open her heart and recognize the importance of negative emotions in balance with positive ones, as they fuel people's ability to dream. Lumina, moved by their arguments, incorporated Void's gem into the reformed Precioustone, causing him to regain his original form. In this moment, Void finally accepted Lumina's offer of acceptance, and the two reconciled, uniting their powers to restore and rebuild Illumina.

Powers and Abilities[]

Void possesses an immense level of control over the powers of darkness, granting him a range of abilities that are not clearly defined. These dark powers have the ability to manipulate and distort the very fabric of Maginaryworld, leading to a transformation and corruption of its different realms. As a result, the once thriving worlds within Maginaryworld are slowly being destroyed. Void's mere touch holds a similar corruptive influence as the Perfect Precioustone and its fragments, causing them to become enveloped in darkness and shatter upon contact. However, it appears that Void has limited or no control over this ability.

Additionally, he is capable of defying gravity, effortlessly maneuvering through the air, and possesses the power to instantaneously transport himself to any desired location.

Transformation[]

At the height of his sorrow, Void undergoes a remarkable metamorphosis, morphing into a grotesque creature that is scarcely recognizable. During this extraordinary transformation, Void acquires extraordinary physical capabilities, surpassing the limits of human strength and endurance. His might becomes so formidable that he can generate seismic shockwaves with a mere strike to the earth's surface, and his resilience enables him to endure the impact of colossal boulders descending upon him without flinching. Moreover, he gains the uncanny ability to levitate effortlessly above the ground, defying gravity's constraints.

In addition to these phenomenal powers, Void possesses the capacity to unleash formidable energy-based assaults. By channeling his inner energy, he can discharge expansive bursts of power from his abdomen, obliterating anything in their path. Furthermore, he can focus his energy into concentrated beams of dark lasers emanating from his arms, poised to obliterate any adversary foolish enough to challenge him.

In other media[]

Archie Comics[]

Within the expansive Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its various spin-offs that have been published by Archie Comics, Void made his presence known. This occurred during the comics' adaptation of the widely popular Sonic Shuffle video game. In a manner that mirrored the game's storyline, Void emerged as one half of the entity known as Illumina. This peculiar being came into existence when Illumina, consumed by a wave of self-doubt, lost herself.

In a display of mysterious circumstances, Void materialized within the realm of Maginaryworld, where he proceeded to fracture the Master Precioustone. However, it should be noted that ultimately, Void was able to revert back to his original state. As the narrative unfolded, Void also made an appearance in Sonic Universe #29, where he was depicted as an inmate residing within the confines of the Zone Jail. At this point, it remains unclear whether this iteration of Void is indeed the same as the previously mentioned one or if he exists as a distinct variant of the character.
