I am Void. My children, who gather on this planet... Heed my voice.
~ Void introducing himself.

Void (Japanese: ヴォイド, Voido), known as the Great One (Japanese: あの, Ano Kata, That Person) by his followers, is the overarching antagonist of Xenoblade Chronicles X. He is a Samaarian scientist that created the race known as the Ganglion and is the original pilot of the Skell, Vita. He originally led the Ganglion in the destruction of Elma's home world and later Earth, before being imprisoned away into Volitaris.

Following Luxaar's death, however, Void was able to break free from his imprisonment and regain control of the Vita. Assembling the remaining Ganglion forces by his side and claiming the cores of the Ares, Void seeks to continue where he left off in the destruction of all life in the universe.

He is voiced by Ryota Takeuchi in the Japanese version of the game, and by Bill Millsap in its the English dub.

Personality[]

What is death...? Is it simply...nothing more than the price of defeat? Does it express the ending of existence? But then, how should one define your kind's existence, exactly? You know not, yourselves... You know nothing. Not the abyss at the heart of everything, where all consciousness has accumulated. You are ignorant... Even of the art of sealing a mind within a person-shaped effigy. Ignorant that you made nothing more than an artificial recreation of its structure.
~ Void questioning death.

Void is a being devoid of any life and emotion in him. Instead, he desires to bring about the destruction of all life across the universe, in order to understand the concept of death. His nihilistic views are the result of his imprisonment in Volitaris, as the isolation within drove him to despair, seeking him to learn more about what death truly is.

He is looked upon by his followers as a messiah, with Luxaar in particular worshipping him as the Great One. Despite this, Void cares very little of those around him, holding no forms of attachment for others, including his own creations, as he is more than willing to drive them all to their extinction.

When Void eventually finds himself facing his own death, he is relieved to experience the sensation, hoping to go through it again. However, his excitement soon turns into dread and despair once he learns that death is only experienced once and that there's no coming back from it.

History[]

Background[]

Void as a mortal

Void constructing the Ares.

Void was a citizen of Samaar that came into possession of the Conduit and conducted research on it. Using its power, he constructed the Ares and the six cores that would give it its power. However, the construction of the Ares alerted the presence of the Ghosts, causing the Samaarians to destroy the Ares and leading Void being blamed as the culprit. As punishment for his crimes, his mind was imprisoned on Volitaris in the rift between worlds.

Left alone in limbo, Void was forced to embrace the solitude of his imprisonment and over time, he became obsessed with wanting to understand the concept of death. Void's mind was eventually freed when a fissure in his imprisonment appeared, allowing him to escape in the universe that contained Elma's homeworld. His mind would then inhabit the Vita, a Skell constructed by his followers.

Ganglion

Void forming and leading the Ganglion.

Learning that the Ares was reconstructed on Elma's homeworld, Void assembled his followers, creating the Ganglion and used them as an army that assisted him in both reclaiming the Ares, as well as seeking to understand what death means. This in turn led to the Ghosts reappearing as well, leading to Void clashing with the Ghosts once more. The conflict between the two brought the destruction of Elma's homeworld and the universe as a whole.

When Elma escaped to Earth with the Ares, both Void and the Ghosts pursued, continuing their conflict from there. In the end, Earth was destroyed but Elma was able to escape with the Ares, as well as the rest of humanity aboard the White Whale. Al then used the Ares to drive off Void's forces and the Ghosts, but he and Void were pulled back into the rift between worlds, with their minds intertwining. When the White Whale crashed on Mira, Void's Skell, the Vita, was left behind in the regions of Noctilum, as his soul laid dormant within the Skell.

Trivia[]

  • Being the true master of the Vita, Void can utilize it to its full capacity, whereas Luxaar can only use 30% of it.
