Volfe Karkko, known by his followers as the Dark Dreamer, is the main antagonist of the Darkness arc of the comic series Star Wars: Republic. He is an Anzat Dark Jedi and sorcerer who is addicted to consuming the "soup" (brain matter and mental essence) of living beings and uses hypnosis to influence the minds of followers and enemies alike.
Once a respected and powerful Jedi, he became addicted to it and became a great danger, so much so it required the entire Jedi Council to bring him down. Instead of killing him due to the rarity of an Anzat Jedi and fondness for the great Jedi he once was, they imprisoned him instead so he can hopefully think on his actions and redeem himself. It had the opposite effect and the Anzati came to worship Karkko, calling him the Dark Dreamer. Karkko continued to use his mind control abilities to influence those around him, as well as bringing other Anzati to him.
After a thousand years, he used his mind powers to make Jedi Padawan Aayla Secura free him. Using her and an army of feral Anzati, he ultimately planned to consume more "soup" so he can become more powerful and take over the galaxy.
Biography[]
Rougly a thousand years ago, a Force sensitive member of the Anzati species named Volfe Karrko joined the Jedi Order. He was the only Anzat in the entire order's history, as it was believed Anzati were too violent by nature. Mainly due to their ability to feed on the brains and essence of their victims (which they called 'soup'), giving them the reputation as 'brain eaters.' To everyone's surprise, Karkko was a great and respected Jedi, powerful and wise.
Karkko was, however, also known to be arrogant. He believed he was above his peoples' obsession with the 'soup.' It was this arrogance that led him into thinking, even if he had tasted the soup, he would not be addicted. One day he did it, using his facial tentacles to feast on the brain and essence of a person. Karkko immediately became addicted and became violent and bloodthirsty, turning to the dark side of the Force. Karkko's addiction was so great that he even consumed the 'soup' of other Jedi. Due to his power in the Force, it required the combined efforts of the entire Jedi High Council at the time to bring him down.
The Council did not wish to kill him, remembering him as the Jedi he was and not the monster he became, as well as recognizing his importance to his people. Therefore, on the prison planet Kiffex, Karkko was placed in stasis, the idea being that, given enough time, Karkko would realize the error of his ways. This failed, as Karkko sought revenge on the council. He was a legendary figure among the Anzati, who revered him as the Dark Dreamer and came to his prison to worship him. Using his telepathic powers, Karkko sustained himself on the energies of the Anzati, turning them into feral monsters. However, due to them not being Jedi, they were not able to help him. Many Anzati showed up during the reign of the Kiffu ruler, Sinte Vos, who allowed the Anzati to feed on the prisoners of Kiffex, and even allowed them to eat her own relatives, Quinlan Vos' parents.
After a thousand years, help finally came in the form of amnesiac Jedi Padawan Aayla Secura. Using his immense telepathic powers, he manipulated Aayla into freeing him. While he did not consume her 'soup', he did brainwash her into becoming his apprentice and future lover.
Personality[]
As a Jedi, Karkko was respected and acknowledged for his power and wisdom, and was overall seen positively by his Jedi peers. However, he was also noted as being arrogant, both toward fellow Jedi and even his own people, seeing their feasting on the 'soup' as beneath him. This arrogance also led him into believing he was beyond the addiction of the 'soup.' When he consumed it, Karkko immediately became obsessed and addicted, desiring to feed his hunger at all costs and turning to the dark side of the Force.
As a Dark Jedi, Karkko arrogance increased drastically, and his obsession with consuming the soup of Force sensitives turned him into a brutal, sadistic, callous, manipulative, utterly monstrous figure. He was obsessed with eating more soup. Despite his cruelty and addiction, Karkko was not stupid ir blinded by it, as seen when he resisted to eat the soup of Aayla Secura, thinking she was of use to him. He was also highly manipulative, ass seen by his influence of the Anzati and Aayla Secura. Although he expressed desire for Aayla, when she snapped out of Karkko's mind control and her memories came back, Karkko attacked her with Force lightning without any remorse.
Powers & Abilities[]
As a Jedi Master, Volfe Karkko was noted to be one of the most powerful Jedi of his day. So strong was his power in the Force that when he fell to the dark side, it took the entire Jedi Council to defeat him. He was proficient in Force lightning, as seen when torturing Aayla Secura and Quinlan Vos. He seemed to psychically feed off of others, as seen by his feral Anzati followers. He also had knowledge of Sith sorcery, as demonstrated by his illusions and mind control abilities. In combat, Karkko was a dedicated Force user and seemed to use his lightsaber as a last resort. This preference for Force abilities became evident when he was defeated by Quinlan Vos when lightsabers were drawn. He wielded a red lightsaber with a mace like pommel.
Karkko's deadliest powers were his telepathic abilities. As an Anzat, he was already capable of influencing the minds of his prey. Due to his Force sensitivity, however, his telepathic abilities were significantly stronger than most Anzati, to the point he was capable of hypnotizing Jedi and bringing them under his control, as seen with Aayla Secura.
Typical of an Anzat, Karkko, in addition to telepathic abilities, also possessed great durability, strength, stealth and a long lifespan, with the average Anzat having a thousand year lifespan. He also had the typical proboscises of Anzati, two tentacle like appendages that could hide in his cheeks which could be used to feed on the brains and essence of his victims, what his people call, "soup."
