The Volkihar Clan are the main antagonists of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim DLC, Dawnguard.
A group of powerful vampires led by their lord and master Lord Harkon, they seek to complete an ancient prophecy known as the Tyranny of the Sun so their kind would rule the eternal night caused by it. During the main Dawnguard quest "Bloodline", the Dragonborn has the option of either joining the clan and being made a Vampire Lord by Harkon, or refuse and join the other faction, the Dawnguard, to destroy Harkon and his court before they can bring the prophecy to fruition.
Dawnguard[]
When the main Dawnguard quest line begins, Harkon had ordered his vampires to attack and destroy the Hall of the Vigilant in The Pale, home to the Vigilants of Stendarr, a group of warriors dedicated to destroying anything of the night they deem a threat, be it werewolves, vampires, witches, Daedra, and more, in the name of the Aedric God Stendarr. They spare no survivors, including Keeper Carcette, head of the Vigilants there, before heading to the nearby Dimhollow Crypt to retrieve Harkon's daughter Serana, who had been imprisoned there by her mother and Harkon's wife, Valerica, to prevent the fulfillment of the prophecy.
When the Dragonborn arrives there under orders to investigate what the vampires are doing by Isran, head of the newly-reformed Dawnguard, the Dragonborn kills the vampires, including their leader Lokil, and frees Serana themselves. Taking Serana back to Castle Volkihar, Harkon offers the Dragonborn the chance to join the clan as thanks for returning Serana and the Elder Scroll of Sun to him. When the Dragonborn accepts, Harkon bloods them as a Vampire Lord, then assigns them to fill the Bloodstone Chalice at Redwater Den for him. However, unknown to Harkon, his top two advisors, Vingalmo and Orthjolf, send their lackeys Stalf and Salonia to kill the Dragonborn and finish the assignment themselves. In the end, Stalf and Salonia are slain by the Dragonborn, who returns triumphant to the castle with the filled chalice, and Harkon then asks them to take Serana and hunt down a Moth Priest to read her Elder Scroll to the clan. After they return with the Moth Priest Dexion Evicus as the Dragonborn's thrall and he reads the Elder Scroll to them, Harkon then sends Serana and the Dragonborn to find the other two and locate Auriel's Bow so that he can complete the prophecy.
When the Dragonborn and Serana return with the bow, it is clear to the both of them that Harkon had no intention of letting them live, intending to sacrifice Serana to complete the prophecy and then eliminate the Dragonborn for serving their purpose. In the end, Harkon is slain, and the Dragonborn is dubbed the new Lord/Lady of Castle Volkihar and master of the Volkihar Clan, allowing them to do odd jobs for the clan that would benefit them, including heading to Fort Dawnguard to eliminate Isran and the Dawnguard once and for all so they won't threaten the clan any further.
Should the Dragonborn refuse Harkon's offer and return to the Dawnguard, the Volkihar Clan is slaughtered by the Dawnguard, with the Dragonborn and Serana killing Harkon, ending their threat to Tamriel and ensuring the Tyranny of the Sun never comes to fruition.
