Von Bork is the main antagonist of Arthur Conan Doyle's short story "His Last Bow".
Biography[]
Von Bork was a German spy working for the diplomat Baron von Herling. He was one of the German's most effective agents, and initiated various plots to destabilize the enemy, such as directing the derailing of several trains in the US.
On the eve of World War 1, Von Bork evacuated his family to Germany before meeting with Baron von Herling, who gave him several dossiers concerning British defence information he had gathered, although he still had to meet with his contact Alamont for information on British naval signals. Von Herling then departed for London in order to continue negotiations with the British government.
Alamont arrived soon after, and was surprised to see the safe in which Von Bork kept his secrets open (as he had given them to von Herling). Alamont informed him that his operation had been compromised by a double agent, several of his operatives had been arrested and he himself was being followed by the intelligence service. He then handed Von Bork the package, but when he opened it he found it was a book entitled A Practical Handbook of Bee Culture. As Von Bork stared at the book in disbelief, Alamont chloroformed him, knocking him out.
When Von Bork came to, he found that Alamont was in reality detective Sherlock Holmes, and swore vengeance on him, which Holmes brushed off, noting that James Moriarty and Sebastian Moran had done the same. He also revealed that all the information he had given to von Herling was worthless, before he and his partner John Watson hauled Von Bork away. Von Bork insisted that this was illegal, as Holmes was a private citizen and therefore was, in effect, kidnapping him, but Holmes told him to stop resisting or else the locals would lynch him for espionage. Instead, Holmes told him he was to be taken to Scotland Yard, and taunted him to call Baron von Herling for help to get him out.
Trivia[]
- As His Last Bow is the final chronological story in the Sherlock Holmes canon, Von Bork is the final antagonist Holmes faces.
