~ Vox's introductory quote.
I can’t believe we thought you could handle even something this simple. And do us a favor; if they don’t kill you, go ahead and do it yourself! You miserable failure!

Vox: It's been seven years!
Valentino: You still pissed he almost beat you that time?
Vox: Uh, f*ck you!
Valentino: Just saying.
Vox: Things have changed a lot since he left town!
Valentino: That's for sure.
Vox: I got to send a message of who's
really in charge of things now!
~ Vox and Valentino after learning of Alastor's return.

Vox is one of the secondary antagonists of the 2024 adult animated musical series Hazbin Hotel. He is a technopathic Overlord of Hell, the CEO of VoxTek, and a member of the Vees alongside Valentino and Velvette, and acts as the leader of the trio.

He is also Alastor's archenemy and rival, trying his best to undermine his influence in Hell as petty revenge over Alastor rejecting his partnership offer years ago.

He is voiced by Christian Borle, who also portrayed Marvin in Falsettos, Orin Scrivello in the 2019 off-Broadway version of Little Shop of Horrors, and both Father and William in Tangled: The Series.

Appearance[]

Vox is shown to be a tall, slim, technology-themed demon standing at about 7'0" ft. He wears a striped tuxedo, a black and red striped shirt, a red bow tie, a whiteish blue undershirt, and a black top hat with a red a broadcast symbol, a blue radio wave, and his antennas out of it. He has a flat screen TV for a head, with the monitor projecting eyes with red sclera, small cyan pupils and different-colored outlines - black for his right and cyan for his left. The screen also shows a mouth full of sharp, cyan-colored teeth and a long pointed tongue similar to Valentino's but cyan. Sometimes what looks like blood seems to drip out of his mouth. A photograph of himself and Valentino shows that many decades ago is head used to resemble an old-fashioned "fat backed" television, meaning he somehow upgraded his appearance to coincide with evolving technology.

Personality[]

Show off. All hat and no cattle.
~ Alastor, describing Vox in the official Hazbin comic "The Radio Demon".

His personality has been shown to be that of an egotistical and charismatic showman who craves and loves attention, and is obsessed with technology, television and innovation, with a not-so-much-educated and formal attitude. Due to his love and obsession for technology, he entered a rivalry with the fellow Overlord Alastor, who despises modern technology while preferring tech from the Victorian era, to the point that he seems to be obsessed with him. He seems to be the main leader of the Vees and the only person capable of calming down Valentino (mostly through manipulation).

He and Valentino seem to have a deep and possibly romantic relationship. When Valentino flies into rage when Angel Dust moves into the Hazbin Hotel, believing he's sleeping with Charlie, and prepares to attack the place, Vox is able to calmly reason with him, pointing out that Angel Dust still works for him and that such an assault would be bad for their reputation. Valentino seems to be aware of his own temper problem and demanded to see Vox so that he can talk him out of it, showing a great sense of trust and respect between the two. However, Vox is also capable of losing his temper as badly as Valentino is, with Val often taking pleasure in stoking the fire on purpose. This was shown when Valentino tells Vox that Alastor is working with Charlie, with Vox flying into an even worse rage than Valentino did.

Aside from Valentino and Velvette, as well as Alastor, Vox does not seem to care much for the other Overlords, such as Carmilla Carmine, who he refers her derisively when talking to his assistant after making up VoxTek Angelic Security, presumably it can be indicated that he only maintains his association with the other Overlords due to his business interest while agreeing with Velvette that the rest of them are just a joke. This also extends to other demons in Pentagram City, manipulating them in the process. Also in the Season 1 finale as he takes pleasure and joy out of seeing people fight and trying to kill each other, which causes him to get verbally explicit and overly honest.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

Not much is known about Vox's past other than that he was once the leader of a cult and hosted a TV show in the 1950s. After he died from an unknown cause, he was reborn in Hell as a powerful demon and later became one of the Overlords of Hell. Having died at the time television was a fledgling form of entertainment, Vox was inspired to adapt the medium and dominate it, eventually controlling the entire television industry of the Pride Ring (and possibly other parts of Hell). He quickly joined forces with Valentino, the equivalent power in Hell's film industry (specifically porn), becoming partners and friends. In "Radio Killed the Video Star", a photograph or himself and Valentino shows that his head used to be an old fashioned "fat backed" television; it can be assumed he used some sort of magic to upgrade his appearance as technology advanced, eventually changing the form of his head to a flat backed widescreen. Eventually, as social media became popular, their recruited Velvette into their fold as well, forming a trinity heading a vast media empire, making them, as a team, one of the most powerful and influential powers in Hell. Because all their names started with V, they officially became known as "the Vees".

At some point in time, he met Alastor and they became rivals. They apparently fought once one time at least seven years before the events of the pilot. Vox was "almost beaten", according to Valentino. Around the same time, Vox also asked Alastor to join the Vees, but he refused, which Vox took very personally. It's unknown if he asked Alastor this before or after their fight, as he could has asked him before, and then fought him in rage of his declination, or after, seeing Alastor as a threat worthy of joining the Vees. Regardless, Alastor was uninterested either way. It's implied that Vox and Alastor used to be friends once.

Pilot[]

In the pilot episode "That's Entertainment", Vox is first seen hiding from the Exorcists alongside Valentino and Velvette, with the latter taking a picture of him to his dismay. Vox and the other overlords of Hell later appear in a flashback when Vaggie tells Angel Dust who Alastor is.

Season 1[]

"Radio Killed the Video Star"[]

In the second episode of the first season, Vox is shown advertising multiple products with his name on across Hell, and is shown to be in a good mood, until Velvette calls him, demanding that Vox come up to her department and calm down Valentino, who is wrecking the place in frustration about Angel Dust leaving him. Vox is shown to be frustrated as he has to go deal with Valentino, and briefly answers some questions from some news reporters, claiming they are working on angel-defense technology and using his powers to hypnotize the demons, before saying hello to Velvette on her floor, who says Valentino is waiting upstairs for Vox to calm him down.

When Vox goes upstairs, he finds Valentino throwing a tantrum and angrily yelling about Angel leaving him, and is about to go and shoot up the Hazbin Hotel when Vox has to stop him and calm him down, saying it would be bad for their image to be chasing 'whores' around town. Valentino concedes but says he still wanted to shoot some people today, and Vox consoles him by offering to get him the lowest-earners that month, with Valentino stating that he knows him too well, before adding that Angel isn't the only one who is staying at the hotel, and that the Radio Demon is as well. Vox is angered when he finds out that Valentino knew and didn't immediately tell him, before looking at the hotel on the cameras and seeing Alastor going to the tailor to get his outfit fixed. He angrily announces that Alastor is back, and Valentino makes a few mocking remarks toward him, reminding him of how Alastor nearly beat him seven years ago. Vox decides to send him a 'message', and sings 'Stayed Gone', to which Alastor soon joins in and overpowers him, shutting down his signal, much to Vox's embarrassment.

The Vees have a meeting, with Vox wanting to stop Alastor from making a deal with Charlie, who is running the hotel and the princess of Hell. Valentino suggests sending someone in on the inside, and Vox asks if Angel would be willing to do it. Valentino dismisses this idea, claiming Angel hasn't even returned his calls, and Vox says that they need someone who Charlie would be willing to take in, while Velvette points out that they need someone who is 'pathetic, desperate and not directly connected to them'. Valentino says he's employed everyone on their side of the city, wondering who else is left, and Vox ominously comments that he has 'just the one'.

This turns out to be Sir Pentious, a demon who had previously attacked the hotel twice. While Charlie warmly welcomes him in, Angel shows distrust towards him and seems disappointed by the notion that Charlie doesn't believe he can change. Things quickly go sideways, however, as Angel discovers Sir Pentious and Vox's plan, and tells Vaggie and Charlie. When Sir Pentious begs Vox to help him escape on a watch he has, Vox is shocked he got caught (as Sir Pentious wasn't even in the hotel for a full day) and tells him that if the hotel staff don't kill him, to do it himself, before quickly turning the watch off.

When the episode ends and the others leave Sir Pentious's room, Alastor comes out of the shadows, revealing he was watching the whole thing, and turns the watch back on. Vox is surprised to see him, but Alastor tells him he needs to be better than that, mockingly calling him 'old pal' before destroying the watch and retreating to the shadows while laughing, causing Vox to scream with rage.

"Scrambled Eggs"[]

Vox makes a silent and unseen appearance in Scrambled Eggs, the third episode. Velvette is seen calling him before the meeting of the Overlords, telling him not to doubt her, before hanging up.

"Masquerade"[]

Vox makes another brief and silent appearance in the fourth episode. He is seen talking with Valentino as Angel watches from his balcony, but the two stop talking as Angel notices, and Vox vanishes, implying he's well aware of Valentino's treatment of him.

"The Show Must Go On"[]

Vox is seen observing the fight between the Hazbin Hotel's residents and the Exorcists from his control room. After first taunting Alastor about his upcoming death, he joins the other Vees in watching the battle; he shows orgasm-like excitement at Alastor fighting and nearly dying to Adam, and later shows shock and respect at Niffty managing to get the killing blow on Adam. He is later seen smiling to himself as Katie Killjoy and Tom Trench report the Extermination to be cancelled. He makes one last appearance in the song "Finale", singing with how Valentino about how the Vees have an opportunity to take over Hell before making out, Velvette recording it

In Other Media[]

A Day In The Afterlife[]

Vox is seen advertising his products to two men on TV at the TV station. When Alastor comes by, the two men flee from him because he is one of the most powerful demons in Hell and Vox stares at him through the TV screens, as well as taking over the broadcast to show himself on all the screens. Alastor then calls Vox a "show off" and walks off as Vox continues to stare at him.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Electrical manipulation: Vox could be able to transform himself into electricity for fly and cause black outs and enter in electrical dispositive. He can also cause a hell-wide black out if he gets particularly furious or if he simply wants it.
  • Electricity transformation: Vox can turn into electricity, which he can use to move around or enter and travel through electronic devices such as security cameras, watches and television monitors that he can control as he pleases. There is a few flaws to this: the place Vox wants to go has to have some form of technology he could go through as he apparently can't teleport through an old-styled radio.
  • Spark Generation: He can create sparks from his fingertips, which can be used to ignite and/or light something, like when he lit Valentino's cigarette in "Radio Killed the Video Star". He can even generate sparks on his body, especially when he is angry. He also causes what looks like a small surge or ripple of electricity to appear through the floor during Stayed Gone from his feet. Its hard to tell if this is part of the spark generation or a separate ability entirely.
  • Brainwashing: His broadcasts seem to have some sort of hypnotic hold on the residents of Pentagram City, compelling them to view and leaving them susceptible to what he says. This also convinces them to buy his advertised products, which are mostly useless.
  • Scrying: As shown in the prequel comic, A Day in the Afterlife, Vox is seemingly able to see through other screens, appearing to stare directly at Alastor while projecting into the TV display of a window-fronted store.
  • Demonic magic: Vox hold superiority over lower demons due to his status as an Overlord in terms of power and show many supernatural and unique abilities. He is regarded by Vivziepop to be "very powerful" and is believed to be one of the most powerful Overlords.
  • Screening: Vox can spy and hear others thought screens.
  • Interferences: Vox can cause glitches, distortions and interferences in dispositive.
  • Influence: As an Overlord, he held social superiority over lower demons, and he lead a popular company that distributes many services, such as the famous Voxtagram and Voxflix, technological dispositive and even food like cereals.
  • Hypnosis: In "Radio Killed the Video Star", it is shown that with his left eye he uses hypnosis to keep his audience drawn in to his program and keep their interest.
  • Communication: He can receive calls from people such as Velvette with his screen head similar to calling on a phone. He could transfer the call to another device.
  • Video playing: Vox can play videos on his face.
  • Electronic device synchronizing: He can plug himself into other devices with the help of cables.
  • Self-replication: Vox was shown to be able to make clones of himself in "Radio Killed the Video Star" during Stayed Gone. However, he has only displayed the ability on television and it is unknown if he can do it physically.
  • Acoustokinesis: He can manipulate the sound of his voice to sound more intimidating. He can also generate different sound effects such as echoing voices and the sound of a winning game machine.

Trivia[]

  • The word "vox" is the shortened version of the word "vocals". It may also be the shortened version of the Latin word vox, meaning "voice", "command".
  • While he had not been given a speaking role in the pilot episode, Vivziepop's head canon voice actor for Vox was Mark Hamill, who famously played Luke Skywalker from the Star Wars franchise, Chucky from the 2019 remake of Child's Play, and The Joker in various DC Comics properties.
  • Vox and Alastor do not get along due to their different views on technology.
  • Velvette once mentioned on one of Blitzo's art streams that Vox and Valentino recently broke up. This could possibly imply that Vox and Valentino were in a relationship, further messages also from the live stream implies it as a romantic one. Though from the pictures on the Val and Vox's Instagram's, this relationship is abusive, as Val breaks Vox's screen for small and petty reasons, seemingly belittling him and comparing him to a TV to replace.
  • Vox owns a pet hammerhead shark named Vark.
  • Vox is confirmed to be bisexual by one of the directors of Hazbin Hotel.[1]
  • According to Valentino in "Radio Killed the Video Star", Alastor almost beat Vox during one of their encounters in the past.
    • Alastor also reveals that Vox once asked him to join him and his team, which he refused, thus explaining Vox's hostility and obsession towards him as quoted in the song "Stayed Gone": “He asked me to join his team! I said no and now he's pissy, that's the tea”.
  • It is implied that Vox has a plan involving Niffty since in "The Show Must Go On", he is impressed that she killed Adam from behind and now seems to take an interest in her.
    • It's been speculated by fans that Vox and Niffty might have been married in life and that he abused her, as both died in the 1950s with Niffty showing both love for "bad boys" and falling dead silent whenever cameras are on her.
  • Vox could be considered the one partially responsible for Velvette and Valentino's own actions such as Valentino sexually abusing and exploiting his employees like Angel Dust which Vox seems to be aware of although he doesn't seem to care and shows apathy towards any of their victims, being more focused on his rivalry with Alastor than anything else, he also encourages their behavior (especially Valentino's), since he offers to bring some of his low earning employees to Valentino so he could take his anger out on them and agrees with Velvette's plan to go to war with Heaven despite not knowing who killed the Exorcist and not actually going to fight the Exorcists themselves.
  • According to Alastor, Vox owes his major success and position as an Overlord thanks to his alliances with Velvette and Valentino. Valentino is always bringing fresh blood for the Vees, while Velvette constantly keeping their business from getting bad PR and hyping them up.
  • During "Stayed Gone", Vox has a mug which, upon closer look, says "Fuck Alastor".
  • Fans have often theorized that Vox died when his head was crushed by a television.
  • Vox was Caucasian back he was alive.
  • Whenever Vox gets angry or frustrated, his voice will be corrupted with glitches and/or static.
  • Chronologically, Vox is the oldest of the Vees, being born in the 1910s-1930s (as he was in his 30s-40s during his death in the 1950s).
  • It's been widely speculated that Vox might have/had unrequited feelings towards Alastor, as they were implied to be former friends, Vivziepop said their relationship was "complicated and sad", and Vox clearly has some sexual attraction towards Alastor with how he got erect over him nearly dying at Adam's hands.
    • Many theorize that Vox's offer for Alastor to "join his team" might have actually been a love confession that Alastor misunderstood, as he's already shown to be blind to romance (with him not getting Rosie's joke about his asexuality, which not even Alastor is aware of).
