We have recovered artifacts from an ancient alien civilization on (planet name)! They must have been active in this region of space approximately 12 million years ago, judging by the age of the artifacts.
From what they have been able to piece together, our scientists theorize that these aliens, who called themselves the "Vultaum Star Assembly," were worm-like annelids, roughly 3 to 4 meters in length, that communicated with each other primarily through vibrations carried along their segmented bodies.
~ The player empire upon encountering Vultaum ruins

The Vultaum, also known as the Vultaum Star Assembly, are major characters in the 4x strategy game Stellaris.

They are one of the precursor races, the long-extinct empires that existed prior to the rise of the player empire and all other empires in the current galaxy. Their story is told through various archeological sites and details a saga of a once-prosperous empire falling victim of delusion that culminated in the mass suicide of their race.

In game, they are long extinct, their empire collapsing over 12 million years ago, leaving only archeological sites including mining bases, observatories, and colonies behind for the newer races to discover. Recovered data indicates that the Vultaum were a highly developed, highly prosperous race, with numerous trade routes and a very advanced VR system, with a popular game within said system having billions of players across their empire. They also began to believe, via their studies or simply through mad delusion, that their universe was a simulation and used a trade station to evangelize their beliefs to traders, resulting in reduced traffic and the ultimate closure of the station.

This madness culminated with the race committing mass suicide via neutron torpedoes or any other means possible everywhere; their colonies, their mines, everywhere, in an attempt to "crash the game" and ultimately escape. Those who did not believe in their delusions were too few in number to repopulate their empire, and so the Vultaum faded into extinction.

Trivia[]

  • The Vultaum's belief of the universe being a simulation is a reference to the Matrix movie series as well as the real-life conspiracy theory.
  • Ironically, the Vultaum were technically correct, as the universe is a game, Stellaris, but the method they used was off. Due to in game mechanics, removing an entire empire of population would actually improve game performance, hence why genocide is not only popular, but encouraged in the game.
