“ | The stage-constructing witch (alias: Walpurgis Night / real name: unknown); her nature is helplessness. She symbolizes the fool who continuously spins in circles. The witch's mysteries have been handed down through the course of history; her appellation is "Walpurgis Night." She will continue to rotate aimlessly throughout the world until she completely changes the whole of this age into a drama. When the doll's usual upside-down position reaches the top part of the witch, she completely roils the civilization on the ground in a flash through her gale-like flight. | „ |

“ | She will turn all of fate's misfortune to nothing. She will flood the earth with magic, and take all of humankind into her play. A moving stage construction. If everything is a play, no unhappy things will exist. It may be a tragedy, but it'll all be part of the script. The play stops on Walpurgisnacht, and the earth does not turn even once more. The story will not change. Tomorrow, and the day after, is the night of Walpurgis. |

~ From Puella Magi Production Note |
Walpurgisnacht is the secondary antagonist of the anime and manga series Puella Magi Madoka Magica as well as a minor antagonist of the first arc of Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story. She is the strongest of the Witches, symbolizing the fool who continuously spins in circles. She is also Madoka Kaname's archenemy.
She was voiced by Kaori Mizuhashi, who also voiced all of her minions.
Appearance[]
Walpurgisnacht has the appearance of a gigantic woman with white skin, wearing a blue and white Renaissance-era dress, turning upside down. The dress' sleeves are very long with a big ruby on each. Her head lacks a top, making it look like a cup. Her headdress holds a large white silk sheet. Her most recognizable feature is the large cog in the place that should be for her legs, connected to her upper body via a red column.
Personality[]
Not much can truly be said about Walpurgisnacht aside from her desire for destruction. She sees the world as a play and desires to remake it in her own image, so that everything will be "part of the script". Befitting her nature as "helplessness", she is always accompanied with a mad laugh at everyone's feeble attempts to stop her. She doesn't seem to see her minions as people, but instead as her puppets that only exist to worship her and fuel her power with their souls.
Walpurgisnacht also has an unhealthy obsession with Madoka, stalking the latter throughout the series to ultimately kill her. Despite the timeline resetting itself over and over again, Walpurgisnacht still tries to kill Madoka every time. When Madoka finally destroys her, Walpurgisnacht still laughs, but this time at her own helplessness, as a poetic end for her.
Biography[]
Like the other Witches, Walpurgisnacht was once an ordinary girl who made a deal with Kyubey to become a magical girl. Over time, her soul was corrupted by grief and despair, turning her into a witch. She would then absorb other witches' powers and turn them into her minion/puppets, using their souls to fuel her power.
Throughout the series, Homura uses the month in which she meets Madoka to not only protect her, but also to prepare defeating Walpurgisnacht. Eventually, Walpurgisnacht successfully kills Madoka in episode 10, thus Homura contracts to reset the timeline 100+ times (in the show, only 3 timelines were presented), but while they manage to defeat Walpurgisnacht in all those timelines, it always brings a bad outcome in that either Madoka's Soul Gem darkens or both Madoka and Homura's Soul Gems do.
Later on, Walpurgisnacht arrives at the current timeline, causing a massive storm that forces the citizens to evacuate. Homura then fights the witch to no avail thanks to her nigh-invulnerability. Eventually, Homura is shot down and runs out of time in her shield, but Madoka arrives in time and makes a wish to destroy all witches and finally becomes a magical girl. Using her newfound powers, Madoka vanquishes Walpurgisnacht, leaving only the witch's cog behind.
Powers and abilities[]
Due to being a fusion of countless different Witches, Walpurgisnacht is considered the most powerful witch of all time, although this does not take into account Kriemhild Gretchen. The power of Walpurgisnacht is so great that, unlike normal Witches, she can exist outside of a Barrier. This means that she can directly affect the physical world, without needing to rely on a Witch's Kiss to kill its victims through despair like most Witches do. A team of powerful Magical Girls can conceivably defeat Walpurgisnacht, but such a monumental task typically comes at the cost of a tremendous loss of life.
Walpurgisnacht is monstrously resilient to damage, to the point that repeated attacks on her using military-grade weaponry seem to deal very little damage, if any at all. It is unclear whether she is simply that durable, has resistance to nonmagical weapons, resists explosive weaponry by virtue of her natural affiliation with fire, or a combination of two or more of these.
Walpurgisnacht is powerful enough to leave a major city in complete ruin, people unaware of the existence of magic usually believe her activities to be attributable to an unprecedented natural disaster. She generates around herself a magical tempest of apocalyptic proportions, powerful enough to snap and uproot skyscrapers. The debris caught in the storm double as massive, deadly projectiles and seem to represent the main threat associated with trying to battle the Witch. In addition, Walpurgis Night has the power to manipulate fire, exhaling massive gouts of flame from her mouth like a dragon's breath and setting buildings in its vicinity ablaze.
Due to the way Walpurgisnacht behaves, it is not entirely clear whether the Witch even consciously targets her aggressors, but her nameless familiars, which appear to be the vestiges of deceased magical girls, will actively defend her, in addition to the grave danger presented by her magical storm.
It is said that Walpurgisnight utterly destroys "the civilization on the ground" if she ever flips right-side up, but since this never happens in the show, it is unclear whether this is a hypothetical scenario or something that has happened before, and what the limitations on this ability are, if any at all.
