~ Atwood trying to discourage his own arrest.. |
Walter Atwood is the main antagonist of the Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders episode “Blowback”. Atwood is an FBI chief official and the mastermind of a violent cover-up campaign to destroy all evidence of his corruption to benefit organized crime in Kurjikstan.
He’s portrayed by Jim Beaver.
Biography[]
Atwood was the deputy director of the FBI and a close associate of Agent Jack Garrett. His favorite game was chess, as it involved strategy and intellect, and, in his words, “you always get to be king”. He was also an American liaison for a child smuggling operation in Kurjikstan, who Garrett and his division, the International Response Team, were assigned to investigate. Atwood allied with a militant cult in the country known as the Brotherhood of Faith, and his code name was “Bishop”, an allusion to his passion for chess. He placed orders for the cultists to kill Keri Lodel and Aron Sabri, in the hopes of framing Edward Delgado, who realized Atwood’s involvement. Lodel was stabbed, Sabri shoved off a balcony. When Delgado went on the run, Garret and his team were tasked with finding him. They knew from him full well he was framed when they reached him, but Atwood decided to get rid of the agents as well. He sent the cultists to get into a shootout with the agents, which killed Delgado, Atwood specifically forbidding backup to them and covering up his motives. It was bad enough Agent Matthew Simmons hacked into federal systems to send an SOS and Agent Russell “Monty” Montgomery from back in the U.S. hacked into nuclear weapons he dispatched to use on the cultists.
The disaster of the operation was so bad the entire team was under review by Atwood himself and Linda Barnes, the FBI’s Director of National Security. Atwood lied to Garrett he had his back, arguing to Barnes he needed to go through the evidence of the review and “treat it like a game of chess”, going into his love for the game. Barnes, however, openly professes her eagerness to completely dismantle the team with the opportunity she has. Atwood’s plan does succeed in briefly getting Monty arrested for his drastic action, but Delgado’s wife Amelia sends photo evidence proving Atwood is the liaison. As a consequence, when he was brought in for testimony, he revealed their confirmation of Atwood’s code name, which his how Garrett profiled Atwood to be responsible. Barnes catches on and, agreeing to do the right thing, she orders Atwood’s arrest. Atwood protests they’re all expendable and tris to justify his actions, to which Garrett, in his disgust, professes he didn’t answer to his responsibility to do right by his duties. Atwood is later incarcerated, and Barnes calls a temporary truce with the team.
