You’re kidding yourself, a--hole. All I ever cared about was killing, and I can’t even do that right anymore. That’s what you’ve got to look forward to. This is your future, and it includes adult f-cking diapers!
~ Walter Kenney to Dexter.

Walter Kenney is a minor antagonist appearing in Season Six of the series Dexter. He is an elderly serial killer who comes out of "retirement" to kill his sixteenth victim.

He was portrayed by Ronny Cox, who also portrayed Richard Jones in RoboCop, Stuart Adams in Killzone, Scott McMillan and Billy Kincaid in Todd McFarlane's Spawn, and Vilos Cohaagen in Total Recall.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Walter Kenney was born to Melinda Kenney and an unknown father in Salem, Oregon. His mother was abusive and beat him, knocking out one of his teeth when he was nine. The police found evidence of long-term abuse and Kenney's mother was arrested.

Killing spree[]

As an adult, Kenney got married and worked as a pipe fitter for over 25 years. During the 1980s, he committed a string of murders across Oregon. He would kidnap prostitutes, rip out their lateral incisor (the same tooth his mother knocked out), violently beat them and finally strangle them to death. He would then dump them on the side of the road (in one case, he was driving drunk and couldn't make it to a highway, so he dumped the body on the deputy sheriff's lawn). The fact that he removed his victim's teeth earned him the nickname "the Tooth Fairy".

Growing up, future serial killer Dexter Morgan viewed Kenney as a role model, keeping a notebook containing newspaper reports of all his crimes.

Kenney retired from both his job and being a serial killer in 2006, moving to Miami and living in a retirement home, where he spent his time playing golf.

Events of Dexter[]

After five years of living in retirement, Kenney grew bored and decided to go back to killing. He attacked a prostitute named Rosalia Davalos a block away from his retirement home, but his old age meant it took 10 minutes for him to kill her and another 20 to crack her tooth, which he failed to remove.

At the crime scene the next day, Dexter (now a blood splatter analyst with the Miami Metro Police Department) noticed Rosalia’s broken lateral incisor and realized it was the work of the Tooth Fairy. He checked out the nearest retirement home and decided that Kenney had to be the killer. He befriended Kenney on the golf course and started running errands for him, like getting him pornography. He then broke into Kenney's storage unit and found his box of teeth. Dexter was disappointed that his idol turned out to be so pathetic and disgusting.

However, Kenney turned out to be more intelligent than expected, as he researched Dexter and found out he worked for Miami Metro. He tricked Dexter into picking him up and then pulled a gun on him, threatening to pull out all his teeth. Dexter subdued him by crashing the car and then took him back to the retirement home.

Now tied down and unable to escape his fate, Kenney admitted that he was clumsy in his latest kill and that the dumping of the body on the deputy sheriff's lawn was nothing more than drunkenness. He became excited that the world would find out he was the Tooth Fairy, but Dexter decided not to give him the satisfaction and smothered him with a pillow, making it look as if he died in his sleep, and then destroyed the evidence of Kenney's crimes. Kenney was last seen as a corpse being taken away by paramedics.

  • Gail Milton - Beaten to death by Kenney off-screen, body found.

Trivia[]

  • Kenney is Dexter's oldest known victim, being 73 years old when Dexter killed him.
  • Some of Kenney's murders pre-date even Arthur Mitchell's killing spree.
