~ Waluigi |
Waluigi is a supporting character in Nintendo's Super Mario franchise.
Introduced in Mario Tennis in 2000, he serves as the primary compatriot of Wario in sports events and as Luigi's rival in much the same way Wario serves as Mario's rival.
Just like Mario, Luigi, Wario, Baby Mario, and Baby Luigi, he was voiced by Charles Martinet until 2023, who also voiced Captain Ratbeard in the Reader Rabbit series, the Elder Brother in Kane & Lynch: Dead Men, and Commander Magenta in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. Following Martinet's retirement as a voice actor in 2023, Kevin Afghani will take over the role beginning with Super Mario Party Jamboree.
Biography[]
Past[]
Waluigi was once a nameless individual driven by a longing for fame. Although nothing is known about his past, he was likely born around the same time as the Mario Bros.; he saw the brothers rise to fame, felt envious, and desired to have their fame, so day and night he would start practicing tennis to eventually face the brothers in "Mario Tennis.".
He would adopt the persona "Waluigi" to act as a rival to them. Taking inspiration from Wario but acknowledging that Mario's position as his rival was taken, he created the name Waluigi (Wario + Luigi) and declared himself Luigi's rival. He and Wario eventually became partners in crime.
Luigi doesn’t tend to take him seriously, thus making him madder and more hellbent on taking his fame and making him feel the jealousy he feels.
Mario Tennis Aces[]
In Mario Tennis Aces, Waluigi plays the role as a minor antagonist in its Adventure mode. In the story, both him and Wario are under the control of Lucien, an ancient evil tennis racket. It is stated that they were easy to manipulate because of their greed. However, rather than themselves, Lucien forces them to give it to Mario so it can use his body to take over the world, perhaps enforcing the idea that Waluigi (and Wario) are seen as incompetent by about everyone. Luigi ends up taking Lucien instead, however, and becomes possessed by it, transforming into a mummified, evil version of himself. As this happens, the same fate is bestowed upon Waluigi and Wario. They do not do much in the story at first, but at the end of the story, they steal two of the Power Stones used to either empower or defeat Lucien right from under Mario's nose and challenge him to a duel in Marina Stadium. Instead, however, they do a Doubles round against Princess Peach and Princess Daisy while Mario takes on the possessed Luigi. When they enter the stadium, they receive a dose of booing for their usual behavior in sports, such as foul play and bad sportsmanship.
In the game itself, Waluigi is a Defensive character much like he usually is. He used to be extremely overpowered but is now a lot more balanced. He has great reach and good shot power, but is rather slow and his shots don't curve very well. As a result, Waluigi players usually spam his Flat Shot. His Special Shot, Showtime, involves him showing his theatrical side, which looks a lot like the animation for him getting an Eagle or better in Mario Golf World Tour; He snaps his finger, gets a rose in his mouth, poses and spins around while screaming "WAAAAAAAAAAAAA" and levitates upwards. His Special Shot seems to also have rose petals as its visual effect. Much like the Mario Brothers and Wario, he is this time in a tennis outfit: a purple polo, a tennis cap, black shorts and tennis shoes that are pointy and resemble his normal shoes. He also does the Moonwalk while doing a Trick Shot.
Other Media[]
Super Smash Bros.[]
Super Smash Bros. Melee[]
Waluigi appears as a trophy, unlockable through the Lottery once at least 250 other trophies have been obtained.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]
Waluigi appears as an Assist Trophy. When summoned, he will run to opponents and stomps them into the ground multiple times before swatting them away with his tennis racquet. Additionally, a random collectable trophy can be obtained, and two stickers are based on Waluigi; the first is based on Mario Superstar Baseball and increases indirect attack power for all Mario fighters. The second is based on Super Mario Strikers, and increases slash attack power for all Mario fighters.
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS[]
Waluigi appears once more as an Assist Trophy. He behaves the same as before, although he can be defeated if he takes enough damage. In both versions, Waluigi's cap is an unlockable hat for Mii Fighters and a trophy can be unlocked by achieving a score of 85 or more in Rival Smash.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
Once again, Waluigi is an Assist Trophy, and defeating him rewards a point. He cannot be summoned on the 3D Land, Midgar, Mute City SNES, Norfair, Spirit Train, and Suzaku Castle stages. Waluigi's cap is still an unlockable hat for Mii Fighters. In "World of Light", Waluigi is portrayed by three spirits. His default spirit is an ace neutral that increases damage from foot attacks, and can the Vault Shop for 6,000 G, scanning the Waluigi amiibo, for facing him in a spirit battle against Luigi wearing Waluigi's clothes on Peach's Castle and summons the Waluigi Assist Trophy. The second spirit is based on Super Mario Strikers, an advanced grab type that increases foot damage. Its spirit battle is against Luigi again wearing Waluigi's clothes on the Swordplay Colosseum portion of Wuhu Island, where soccer balls are the only spawning item. The third and last spirit features Waluigi on a Standard Bike, and a novice support that boosts the fighter's speed when at no damage. Its spirit battle is against four Warios on the Figure-8 Circuit with increased move speed and power to their motorbikes.
Appearance[]
Waluigi is tall, with a very dark indigo/navy blue shade of overalls (sometimes black), a purple shirt, and a purple hat with a yellow upside down "L" along with orange elf-like shoes and white gloves with his symbol printed on it (similar to Wario's). He also possesses a crooked mustache, a big pink nose just like Wario's, pointy ears and a huge chin, and is rather skinny.
Red Eyes[]
In the original Mario Tennis, whenever Waluigi won a round, his eyes would flash red for a second. This is unknown why he does this, but some speculate he is a robot created by Wario. In Mario Tennis Open, he does this again, but only for two seconds this time.
Personality[]
In a twisted way, Waluigi is similar to Luigi; whereas Luigi is more timid than him, but also more cautious and conscientious than the brave, but bull-headed and noble Mario, Waluigi is more passive-aggressive and self-pitying than the outwardly aggressive Wario. Waluigi also complains a lot, and cannot accept his own flaws. Whenever he fails, he tends to blame it on others by claiming everyone's a cheater.
Indeed, Charles Martinet, the voice actor of Waluigi, stated that self-pity was his primary characteristic. He is also jealous, spiteful and bitter. In short, Waluigi is a cruel parody of Luigi. He also has many attributes of a classic villain, such as treachery, cunning, manipulation, and occasionally, he exhibits some narcissistic and psychotic tendencies. Because he is unpopular with many people in universe, Waluigi is boastful, and brags obnoxiously about every achievement, be it big or small, since nobody else will give him any positive reinforcement.
Powers and Abilities[]
Waluigi has the power to summon water, which he can use to cover an area. Waluigi can also swim through the air as a way of flying. Waluigi is incredibly skilled at sports, with his best sport being tennis. Waluigi often uses Bob-ombs, and Piranha Plants in battle. Waluigi's legs are incredibly powerful, allowing him to jump high and run at high speeds. Waluigi can also use the warp speed power-up to move at high speeds. With the power of all of the Music Keys, Waluigi becomes the best dancer in the world, and his dance moves have hypnotic abilities.

Trivia[]
- Waluigi (Waruīji) is a portmanteau of the japanese adjective (warui) and Luigi (Ruīji).
- Both Luigi and Waluigi seem to be in love with Daisy.
- Despite being seen as a joke character by Nintendo, Waluigi has a surprisingly large fanbase and is one of the most beloved Mario characters to date. Ever since 2022, Mario Strikers: Battle League was most likely Waluigi's last appearance as his 22-year streak was broken in 2023. Nintendo seemingly forgot to include the fan-favorite weirdo, announcing the Waluigi-less year since the popular character's inception.
- This is further shown when he became one of the most requested characters for the Super Smash Bros. series to be made as a playable character in spite of his status as an assist trophy.
- The official guide for Mario Kart: Double Dash!! indicates that Waluigi has a recurring nightmare in which he transforms into a Pokémon.
- Waluigi has starred in a multitude of fan games, the most popular and beloved one being the game, Psycho Waluigi, made by Thunder Dragon. In the game, Waluigi ends up in the land of Unconsia and is informed by a creature named Psycho Iris that he has Psychic powers. Psycho Iris the asks Waluigi if he wants to assist in his conquest of Unconcia, to which he gleefully replies and the two go around invading various kingdoms, dethroning the rulers and fighting General Hazel of the Hanzelnaut army.
- Waluigi is also known to be one of the most requested characters to be playable in Super Smash Bros., and as such, this has evolved into an internet meme.
- Waluigi's colors is referenced in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door when Mario wears both the W Emblem and L Emblem badges together.
- Additionally, both Mario and Luigi have alternate costumes based on Waluigi's outfit, with Luigi gaining his in Super Smash Bros. and Mario gaining theirs in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
- A Waluigi costume also exists in Super Mario Odyssey, with the costume making reference to his lack of major roles in its descriptions, saying that his cap is barely used and his clothing saying something about lurking in the shadows.
- Despite being Wario's sport partner, he has never appeared in any Wario games, save for his cameo as a crude sketch in WarioWare Gold.
- Mario Tennis for the Game Boy Color marks Waluigi's only appearance on a Game Boy Color game.
- Mario Tennis Power Tour marks the only time where Waluigi is seen without Wario.
- Although Waluigi is not playable in Mario Kart 7 (though he was supposed to appear in the game as a playable character, but was scrapped, due to time constraints) but his track, Waluigi Pinball from Mario Kart DS appears as one of the retro tracks, which makes it the only post-Mario Kart Double Dash!! game where Waluigi does not physically appear.
- During the development of Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64, before the name "Waluigi" is ultimately decided, several names were brainstormed such as "Jeroji", "Jinani" and "Wa-igi".
- The music of Waluigi Pinball from Mario Kart DS is considered to be Waluigi's theme.
- In Super Mario Party and Mario Party Superstars, Waluigi's dance moves look similar to the late Michael Jackson's moonwalk.
- Waluigi’s symbol possibly looks like an R because it represents “Ruigi,” which is short for “Waruiji”
- While Wario and Waluigi's relationship is that of partners, many fans see them as siblings.
- Waluigi appears to be inspired by Boyacky from Yatterman.
- He never plays a major villainous role with the exception of Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix where he kicks off the events of the story and attempts to take over the world with his dancing.
- Waluigi has an affinity for plants, as shown by his frequently being depicted with red roses, wielding a Piranha Plant initially in duels from Mario Party 3, having the whiskered eggplant as a food and a tool to poison batters in Mario Sluggers, and his ability to conjure briar plants en masse in the Mario Strikers games.
- Mario Kart Wii says that he owns Mushroom Kingdom's largest motor oil refinery, and Stadium Arena and Waluigi Stadium from Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 suggest he has an interest in mechanical attractions like animatronic dinosaurs, further compounded by the suggestion that he designed and built the Waluigi Pinball courses in other Mario Kart games.
