Wang is the main antagonist in the first half of the manga and the anime of the same name, Darwin's Game. One of the players of the tournament known as Darwin's Game, Wang is the leader of the clan that dominated Shibuya, Eighth, notorious for their savagery and brutality just like their master. Believing himself to be a protagonist of the Darwin's Game, Wang has no hesitation to brutally murders or brutalizing other people just to get what he wants. Due to his brutality and sadism, he makes his mark as the protagonist, Kaname Sudou's, personal foe.
He is voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka in the original Japanese version who voiced Emile from Dragalia Lost, Loki in Record of Ragnarok and Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti from Re;Zero. In the English dub, he is voiced by Mike McFarland, best known as the voice of Buggy the Clown from One Piece and Koutarou Amon in Tokyo Ghoul.
Appearance[]
Wang appears as man with a fair build and a rather ghastly look on his face which reflects his true personality with his smug grin and his slanted eyes. He has a black hair tied in dreadlocks, wearing a black vest with a number 8 on his back and a grey shirt tucked in on the sleeves and a dark green pants which is also the uniform that were used by his clan mates. In addition, to prove himself he is the leader of the clan, he also has several red stripped tattoos on his arm.
Personality[]
Wang can be described as a savage and sadistic animal who relishes on committing violence and viewing people as nothing but a mere toy for him to play. This was evidenced when Wang and his gang members usually tortures his victims in a slow and painful manner before finishing them off. His favorite modus operandi however, was to cut the fingers of his victims while using them as his favorite drink for him and his own subordinates.
In addition, Wang can be described as a delusional person, claiming that he was the hero of the Darwin's Game as according to him, his kanji name means "King" and can do whatever he wanted with his own position and doing whatever it takes to win the fight. Another evidence of his delusional behavior is when he claims that Eight is a clan that protect Shibuya despite at the end, they were nothing but a thrill killers obsessed with brutalizing people out of the way. When the going gets though, Wang is shown to be a coward, pathetically begging for his life to be spared and claiming that the Darwin's Game is bugged.
In spite of his negative traits, Wang does have several positive traits on his sleeve such as his cordial relationship with his gang members. It is shown that his gang members respected Wang not out of fear, but his charismatic behavior to the point one of the gang members shown Wang as a huge enlightenment to kill more people. Other moments that he shown his charismatic behavior is when he gave one of his subordinates to drink his own personal favorite drink to become more powerful, the moment where he warned his gang members to keep their pants on and not get overly optimistic or at one moment where he becomes angry towards his subordinates due to his incompetence but return to his cordial behavior again after sharing their mutual hatred with the cops.
However, some may argue that his positive trait fell apart because Wang has no hesitation to use his subordinates as a disposable fodder to attack the Shibuya Tower because they didn't participate in the Treasure Hunt event while he and the rest of his subordinate who participate in the game tried to solve the puzzle of the Treasure Hunt event and how he prioritizes his view about the heroes being nothing but his playthings after they massacred his gang members. Other positive traits that he shown is that despite his cowardice, he seemingly accepts his defeat despite being defiant to the very end.
Biography[]
Wang and his gang were introduced in the story as he and his gang brutally massacred the people who are the members Yakuza gang that ruled Shibuya, Akita-Kai, while torturing the remaining survivor by slicing his fingers off and using it as a drink for himself and his own gang. It is heavily implied that he is also responsible for the massacre in Shibuya as he and his gang attempts to took care of the lose ends.
During the Shibuya Treasure Hunt event, Wang was fighting against a mysterious girl with pyrokinetic powers at the top of a skyscraper building. Seemingly defeated at first, Wang manages to overpower her and throws her into the ground which led her into an imminent death. After the fight, it was soon revealed that he already collect 32 rings during the event and seemingly crack the code of the rings. During Kaname's fight against another Darwin's Game participant, Ryuji Maesaka, it was soon revealed that Ryuji hold a grudge against Wang because he murdered Ryuji's brother.
Seeing that some of his gang members didn't participate on the treasure hunt events, Wang decides to use them as a reinforcements so that he could attack the Shibuya Tower in order to retrieve the remaining ring while Wang and the rest of the gang decides to go to the Shibuya Station after managing to solve the ring puzzle.
During his hunts in the Shibuya Station alongside his gang, he and his gang managed to found the Information Broker of Darwin's Game, Rein Kashiwagi, who attempts to run away to save herself. However, Wang manages to capture her with his tenacious powers and starts to interrogate her in order to find the treasure. When Rein answered the interrogation by saying that she didn't know anything, Wang then twists her arm and threatens to cut her fingers one by one and then goes straight to her ears and her tongue.
Fortunately, Kaname and his companions manages to step in and saved Rein from trouble. During the fight against the heroes, Wang forces them to extract the information about the treasure and when Ryuji, who is now one of Kaname's companions, tries to run away from Wang, the latter then manages to capture Ryuji and attempts to torture him to death and turn his fingers into a liquor just like the Yakuza survivor he had brutally murdered.
Before Ryuji met his impending doom, Kaname steps into the scene and declare himself surrendering against Wang after Wang tries to slice Kaname off and seemingly give the info of the treasure location by saying that it was located in a bank. As a result, Wang decided to pragmatically team up with Kaname in order to get the treasure and if Wang suspected it was a trick, he has no hesitation to murder him and Ryuji if the deed is done. However, it was soon revealed that Wang was defeated during the treasure hunt as Kaname manages to trick him while Wang orders his gang members to mow Kaname like a pig which failed as they were teleported away.
Displeased with his own defeat, Wang then orders his gang members to track down where Kaname live and then decides to kidnap his best friend, Shinozuka, when he tried to visit Kaname. Successfully kidnapping Shinozuka, Wang then cuts his finger off and video taped Shinozuka misery while sending it to Kaname just to screw with him much to Kaname's anger. As a result, the heroes attempt to locate where Wang is hiding in which is revealed to be a warehouse near the port.
As Kaname managed to trace their location, he then send the SWAT Team as a mere distraction to save Shinozuka from trouble. Knowing that the police were on to them, Wang become furious towards one of his gang members, Shinji, because on how he told Wang to play safe and not to worry about the cops. However, Wang manages to put his cordial mask again towards Shinji after sharing their mutual hatred with the police.
As Wang's gang members are getting distracted to fight the police, Kaname then orders Shinozuka to use the Darwin's Game help center to escape from his torture while Wang also orders Shinji to pop Shinozuka's head off before leaving to kill the cops. Knowing that he is unable to call the help center due to his finger being sliced off, Shinozuka decides to join Darwin's Game as he was bestowed by a telekinetic power in order to defeat Wang's gang members including Shinji.
As Kaname attempted to retrieve his friend back, he then encountered Wang who then gleefully told Kaname that he and his gang members already killed Shinozuka while putting his mutilated remains on the corpse. Knowing that it's all too late to save Shinozuka, Kaname then questions about his own philosophy about not killing people because they were trapped in the game and deduces at the end of the day, Wang and his gang members are simply savage animals that needs to be killed.
After the heroes manage to kill most of the members of Wang's gang, Wang then ranted towards the heroes that they should still be his own playthings before attempting to butcher them with satisfaction. Fortunately, his limbs were chopped thanks to the help from one of Kaname's companions, Shuka. When seemingly defeated, Wang then complained that the game was bugged and claiming that he's the king of the game before pathetically begging for mercy so that he would be spared. When Kaname attempts to kill him, Wang instead accepts his death while giving an advice in a mocking fashion that other poisonous people will targeted him in the end.
