The Warden of the Silent Sorrow, formerly known as the Eldest Brother, is a minor antagonist and the first boss in the indie game Blasphemous. He was once the leader of the Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow before mutating and going mad due to the effects of the Miracle.
Biography[]
The Warden was once known as the Eldest Brother, the leader of the Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow, a covenant of mute warriors who were vowed in silence as penance. When they opposed the religious orders from Escribar, the entire covenant was massacred on his command. One member would be resurrected as a way to complete his penance, becoming known as the Penitent One.
Shortly after beginning his quest, the Penitent One comes across another room within the Brotherhood littered with corpses of fallen warriors. In the distance is the Warden, smashing his weapon against the ground, either killing off still living warriors or simply slamming in fury. Upon noticing the Penitent One, the Warden leaps to the foreground to confront him.
The Warden has only two attacks, both of which are simple to dodge. One is a leap where he repositions himself to face towards the Penitent One or to be in front of him. The other is a slam from his weapon, causing a shockwave that travels across the arena all the way in front of him. It can be dodged by jumping over the shockwave or by sliding under him as he slams his attack.
Once defeated, the Warden collapses backwards before bleeding to death from his injuries. The Penitent One proceeds to gather gushing blood from the Warden's open wound with his helmet before placing it back on his head. Outside the Brotherhood, the Penitent One meets Deogracias, who claims that "The anguish of the Eldest Brother has now come to an end."
Later on, two Wardens can be encountered as minibosses at the Wall of the Holy Prohibitions.
Appearance[]
The Warden is a giant man bare of any clothing except for an olive green vest with yellow scribbles on it that covers his front and back torso, and an iron mask that hides his entire face, including his hair. He wields a candelabrum-like object that he slams like a mace.

- Defeating the Warden unlocks the "A Long Path Ahead" achievement.
- Should the Warden defeat the Penitent One, the game will give the player a tutorial on how to use the sliding mechanic.
