~ The Warring Triad warning mortals not to awaken them. |
The Demon, the Fiend, and the Goddess, collectively known as the Warring Triad, are the overarching antagonists of the 1994 role-playing video game Final Fantasy VI.
They are a trio of gods who descended from above to wage war against each other in the realm of mortals, creating magic and espers to do so. Upon realizing how their constant battles were tearing the planet apart, the Warring Triad decided to slumber within statues for the rest of the eternity in order to stop the bloodshed, warning humanity not to reawaken them. However, thousands of years later, the Triad are reawakened by Kefka Palazzo, who absorbs their power and forces them to act as his servants in destroying the world.
History[]
Past[]
Long ago, the Warring Triad descended from the heavens and created magic. Fearing each other's power, the three deities went to war, creating espers and enslaving humans to serve as their minions. Eventually, the world was devastated by their constant feuding, causing the Triad to see the error of their ways. Thus, they turned themselves into statues that face each other to keep their powers in check, and went into an eternal slumber. However, they warned the mortals that if anyone was to reawaken them, they would tear the planet apart.
Final Fantasy VI[]
Thousands of years later, Emperor Gestahl, ruler of the Gestahlian Empire, plots to uncover the location of the Warring Triad's statues so he can harness their powers and take over the world. To achieve this, Gestahl begins capturing and killing espers, using their remains to form Magicite and infuse his own soldiers with said Magicite to turn them into Magitek Knights. The first of these knights was Kefka Palazzo; however, since the process of infusing Magicite into humans was still in its experimental phase, the results drove Kefka insane and left him with a burning desire of destruction. Nevertheless, Gestahl saw Kefka's newfound madness as a tool, and kept him as his primary general.
Eventually, Gestahl and Kefka found the Warring Triad. However, Kefka, having secretly absorbed far more Magicite than he was supposed to, betrayed the Emperor and murdered him before moving the Triad's statues out of place. He then absorbs the Triad's power and uses it to destroy most of the world.
One year later, the Warring Triad themselves have been reduced to nothing but slaves for Kefka to control atop his tower, where he rules as the World of Ruin as a god and abuses the Triad's powers to murder people at will. The protagonists of the game, the Returners, eventually climb Kefka's Tower and defeat the weakened Warring Triad before finally putting an end to Kefka himself.
Other Appearances[]
Final Fantasy IX[]
Statues of a demon, a fiend, and a goddess can be found in Kuja's lair, the Desert Palace. These are implied to be this game's versions of the Warring Triad.
Final Fantasy XIV[]
The Warring Triad appear in Final Fantasy XIV as major antagonists in the Heavensward expansion pack. Here, they are reimagined as three Primals who terrorized the Allagan Empire, only to be sealed away. When the Knights of the Round attempt to take their power for themselves, the Traid reawakens, only to be defeated by the player characters.
