A King holds absolute power over his people. He is not meant to serve... He is meant to be served! To command! To possess! To enjoy! That is the privilege of royalty! And it shall be mine!
~ The Wasp King

Hoaxe, better known as the Wasp King, is the main antagonist of the 2019 role-playing video game Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling, and the titular villainous main protagonist of the Hoaxe: Origins prequel comic. He is the tyrannical monarch of the Wasp Kingdom who actually is a fly, overthrowing the kingdom's queen, Vanessa, and brainwashing the wasps in the kingdom to serve him.

Biography[]

Past[]

As an infant, Hoaxe was abandoned in the Dead Lands by his parents. For several years, he would struggle to survive within the Dead Lands and fight off against the Dead Landers. During a fight with a Dead Lander Gamma, Hoaxe was crushed by a large crystal that fell from the wall. A group of wasps find and rescue the dying Hoaxe and nurse him back to health in the Wasp Kingdom.

He would settle in the Wasp Kingdom, becoming a waste collector, ridiculed and mocked by other civilians. Angered, Hoaxe swore revenge against the populace and later left the Wasp Kingdom to travel across Bugaria after reading about the Everlasting Sapling from within the library.

Eventually, Hoaxe travelled to Metal Island and met the merchant Yale, who gave him a crown; this crown actually being the Ancient Crown, one of many Ancient Artifacts created by the Roaches fabled to be in Bugaria.

The crown enhanced his magic, granting him powerful pyrokinesis, allowing him to seize full control of the Wasp Kingdom upon his return. With a single snap from his fingers, the wasps were brainwashed under his control with the exception of Queen Vanessa II, who Hoaxe sealed away within her room.

Now known as the Wasp King, Hoaxe would then begin to seek out the remaining Ancient Mask, Tablet, and Key Pieces in hopes of finding the Everlasting Sapling to achieve eternal life. The Ant Kingdom, also in search of the Sapling, would soon become a frequent target of attacks and invasions under the Wasp King.

Bug Fables[]

The Wasp King first appears during the break between Chapters 4 and 5, after Team Snakemouth, comprised of Vi, Kabbu, and Leif, had succeeded in finding the four Ancient Artifacts. He and his troops attacked the Ant Kingdom City, and stormed the castle himself to confront Queen Elizant II, besting her guard in combat with ease. Team Snakemouth confront and fight the Wasp King, but are defeated by one of the king's flame vortexes. The Wasp King takes a swing at Leif and steals the Ancient Key piece from him. He attempts to take the rest from Elizant, is stopped by Maki. After his defeat, Hoaxe takes his leave, swearing to return so he could retrieve the rest of the artifacts from her.

Team Snakemouth and Maki journey to the Wasp Kingdom and confront General Ultimax, who tells them that the King is in his chamber with the Artifact. He is defeated and the team enter the Wasp King's private chamber, only to find Queen Vanessa II instead, who warns them that he was on his way to the Ant Kingdom again to retrieve the rest of the Artifacts.

Team Snakemouth, Vanessa, and Maki return to the Ant Kingdom City to find that it had not been destroyed by the wasps again. Maki suspects something may be wrong in the castle and leaves to check along with Vanessa. Team Snakemouth soon follow to find that the Wasp King had broken into the throne room and attacked Elizant. The team try to confront the king again only to be wiped out by his flame attack. The Wasp King threatens to kill Elizant and her people should she not surrender the remaining artifacts. With no other options, she concedes and gives him the Ancient Mask, Tablet, and remaining Key piece. The Wasp King leaves to journey to the Giant's Lair to retrieve the Everlasting Sapling.

After Team Snakemouth defeat Ultimax and the wasps stationed in Rubber Prison, they reach the Giant's Land, where the Wasp King abandoned his troops to the Dead Landers and activated a large stove to create a fiery barrier to prevent anyone from pursuing him, exposing a nearby Roach village to the flames. Eventually, the team best the Dead Landers and turn off the machine, allowing them to confront the Wasp King. He vows to kill everyone who stands in his way.

Team Snakemouth manage to defeat the Wasp King, but he catches them off-guard with a sneak attack, allowing him enough time to open the capsule containing the Everlasting Sapling. To his horror, the Sapling had since wilted. Enraged, the Wasp King refuses to accept defeat and quickly devours the last remaining leaf, turning him into the Everlasting King. He then burns what remained of the Sapling. Team Snakemouth engage in a final battle with the Everlasting King and ultimately succeed in defeating him. The Everlasting King cries out of his immortality before turning into a plant. With the Wasp King's demise, the wasps were freed from his brainwashing.

Bestiary Entries[]

Wasp King[]

Hoaxe was abandoned by his parents in the middle of the Dead Lands, before he spoke his first words. Only through a miracle did he survive to reach Bugaria, where he managed to blend into the Wasp Kingdom's populace. He had no friends, and no respect. All he had was his job: cleaning up trash. One day, he vanished from the Wasp Kingdom. Nobody cared. When he returned, unrecognized by all who ostracized him, he commanded such power and charisma...They had no choice but to serve him.

Vile usurper, who has led the Wasp Kingdom to ruin... Today, bugkind will be freed from your villainy. We must not waste this opportunity the Flame Brooch has given us! Give it your all, everyone!
~ Kabbu's spy notes on the Wasp King.
You're gonna pay for that invasion! Your plans are super over! The fire still hurts a bit, but we can take it now! Time to show him what Team Snakemouth's made of!
~ Vi's spy notes on the Wasp King.
Sweet payback. We've been waiting for a good few missions to bring karma upon you. Everyone, even though the Flame Brooch protects us, don't get careless. We can't afford to lose!
~ Leif's spy notes on the Wasp King.

Everlasting King[]

Although the Everlasting Sapling seemed wilted, it still possessed enough power to morph Hoaxe into an incredibly powerful form. Commanding the power of the artifacts, the flames, and the Sapling, there was no logical way for Team Snakemouth to win. What was the reason, then, for Hoaxe's power to eventually run out...? Sadly, as the Everlasting Sapling is no more, research cannot be conducted.
~ The Everlasting King's bestiary entry.
Everyone...we have never faced power like this. It's overwhelming, but we stand together! Let us destroy the artifacts as he summons them. We must press on until the end!
~ Kabbu's spy notes on the Everlasting King.
You dumb jerk! You've caused my friends too much trouble! We're gonna save everyone! I'll get the flying artifacts down... I trust you guys with your parts!
~ Vi's spy notes on the Everlasting King.
This is it, huh. Vi, Kabbu... thanks for all the good times. We can feel the artifacts... Let's destroy them as soon as they appear. We can't stop now!
~ Leif's spy notes on the Everlasting King.
