Kawara! Only one thing has kept me going through the hell of these last 26 years... The revenge I take today. I know you slaughtered my brethren who came from Korea too! I'll put a bullet in you for every one of them you murdered.
~ Kurahashi, after wounding Kawara

Wataru Kurahashi, real name Yeongmin Ji, is the secondary antagonist of Yakuza 2 and it's remake Yakuza Kiwami 2.

He is a Jingweon Mafia member who managed to infiltrate the Japanese police. His goal is to avenge the deaths of his comrades killed during the Jingweon Massacre committed by the Tojo Clan. He also wanted to kill the officer Jiro Kawara, to avenge the deaths of other Jingweon members who killed his wife, for not following the creed.

He was portrayed by Houka Kinoshita.

Biography[]

Yeongmin Ji was a Korean immigrant in Japan and a member of the Jingweon Mafia, one of the most feared gangs in Asia. Ji assisted to the Jingweon Massacre perpetrated by Tojo Clan, which caused 33 victims among their members. Ji, however managed to survive, along his friend Daejim Kim/Yukio Terada, after being spared by Shintaro Kazama, one of the most efficient hitmen in the Tojo Clan. Ji, hurt by the loss of his colleagues, decided to plan revenge against the Tojo Clan, taking the name of Wataru Kurahashi, and infiltrated in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police

In 2006, Kurahashi is leading a task force composed by Makoto Date, Jiro Kawara and Junichi Sudo, who is investigating on the Jinweon Mafia, who are suspected to be responsible to let explode a bomb at the Millenium Tower. Kurahashi asks Date and kwara to investigate on Kazuki, the Stardust Club owner, who is suspected to be a Jingweon agent. However said Kazuki was actually an impostor, who kidnapped the real Kazuki. The impostor was killed later by Kaoru Sayama. The case was later taken by the Division One, after a video showed Date supposedly shooting at the fake Kazuki, leaving the task force off the case.

Kurahashi reveals his true allegiances to Kiryu, ordering to come at the Millenium Tower, with Kaoru Sayama, threating to blow up Date, the Florist and his staff, taken hostage by the Jingweon. After they show up, Kurahashi reveals to Kaoru that Jiro Kawara, who deicded also to show up, after having heard about Date, is her father. Later, he wounds Kawara, expriming his desire to take revenge against him and attempted to let explode the bomb, only to be knocked out by Kiryu. Despite his defeat, he still managed to shot at Kaoru, dying in the shootout but succesfully killing his archnemesis Kawara who shielded agent Sayama with his body.

Personality[]

Kurahashi appears as a fair by-book police officer, who hides his vengeful grudge against the Tojo Clan for the Jingweon Massacre, desiring to avenge his fallen brothers by blowing up 33 bombs in Kamurocho, one for every member dead. He's also livid against Kawara, for the deaths of his gang brothers, clearly enjoying to plant in him several bullets. Like other Jingweon members, he has an undying loyalty to the Jingweon Creed, offering to every person who has a blood bond with a Jingweon member to join the Syndicate, or be killed by it

Abilities[]

  • Manipulation: Kurahashi is an able manipulator, hiding his true identity from everyone, except Jiro Kawara.
  • Fighting Skills: He's an able gunslinger, as showed in his fight against Kiryu
  • Bilinguism: Speaks Korean and Japanese fluently
