The Watchers, also referred to as the Frozen Watchers or Pierce-Eyes, are the overarching antagonists of the League of Legends franchise.
They are ancient entities from the Void who serves aa the ultimate rulers of all living Voidborns, and the creators of the early versions of the modern Voidborn. They were responsible for transforming the native beings of Freljord into the Iceborn, who eventually rebelled against their rule. According to a largely forgotten myth, the Howling Abyss was constructed by Ornn at the request of the Three Iceborn Sisters to imprison the Watchers. They were also responsible for the cataclysm at Icathia, where they destroyed and consumed an entire civilization.
The Watchers are immensely powerful, with a deep, insatiable hunger to consume and control all realities, believing themselves to be the rightful masters of the universe.
Description[]
In the Void, the Watchers exist as formless entities, embodying the emptiness of the Void itself. However, when they manifest in the material world, their appearance can change depending on their surroundings. According to the Legend of the Frozen Watchers, when a Watcher first made contact with Runeterra, it developed horns, patches of fur, and its massive tentacle-like limbs transformed into jointed humanoid arms with fingers that clawed at the rocky mountainsides. In their physical state, the Watchers are subject to the laws of Runeterra, which enabled Lissandra to temporarily imprison some of them in True Ice.
To Lissandra, the dreams of the Watchers appear as pure nothingness.
History[]
The Watchers hail from the Void, a mysterious and terrifying realm outside the known universe. They are ancient beings, existing long before the formation of Runeterra, and their influence spans across time and space. Unlike most Voidborn, who are monstrous entities born from the Void's raw energy, the Watchers are far more advanced, intelligent, and potent. They were the original creators of the first Voidborn prototypes, which later evolved into the forms known today. Their motives are enigmatic, driven by a desire to return the universe to a state of nothingness, which they view as its perfect form.
The Iceborn and the Freljord[]
Long ago, the Watchers set their sights on Runeterra, particularly the icy region of Freljord. They sought to extend their dominion by transforming the native beings of Freljord into a new race known as the Iceborn, powerful beings imbued with the essence of the Void. The Iceborn were created to serve the Watchers and spread their influence. However, over time, the Iceborn grew resentful of their masters and ultimately rebelled against them, severing their connection to the Void and vowing to protect their homeland from the Watchers' malevolence.
The Howling Abyss[]
In response to the growing threat posed by the Watchers, the legendary demigod Ornn was approached by the Three Iceborn Sisters, Lissandra, Avarosa, and Serylda. At their request, Ornn constructed the Howling Abyss, a massive chasm designed to imprison the Watchers and halt their advance into the physical realm. The Howling Abyss serves as a barrier, sealing the Watchers within a frozen prison, deep beneath the ice and snow of Freljord. Over time, the true nature of the Howling Abyss and the Watchers' existence faded into myth and legend, forgotten by most.

Bel'Veth[]
Bel'Veth is a Voidborn formed from the remnants of an entire city that was consumed by the Void. Although she was created by the Watchers and understands their motives, she looks down on them for not recognizing the potential she envisioned. While the Watchers aim to destroy all of creation, Bel'Veth seeks to reshape it, leading her to rebel against them. She is even willing to ally with humanity to thwart their plans.
Lissandra[]
Lissandra was once an ally of the Watchers, collaborating with them to bring about the end of all life. However, she eventually turned against them and became their captor, imprisoning the Watchers within a massive barrier of ice.
Vel'Koz[]
Vel'Koz is the oldest remaining Voidborn prototype created by the Watchers. His primary purpose is to gather knowledge on their behalf.
