Watchers (What If...?)

The Watchers are the main antagonists of the anthology television series What If...?

They are a group of omnipotent beings from the fifth dimension who observe the multiverse without interfering. After one of their ranks, Uatu, continuously interfered with other universes, they decided to stop him once and for all.

History[]

The Watchers' origins are unknown, though it is made clear that they have been around for eons. All Watchers had to take an oath that they took an oath to not interfere with other universes, though they are willing to break this oath if they deemed it necessary for the multiverse's survival. At one point, The Eminence, the leader of the Watchers, trained a disciple named Uatu, whom he tried to teach their ways.

The Watchers first appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, briefly showing up when Rocket and Yondu Udonta flew through a jump point. They talked to Stan Lee before getting annoyed with him and returning to the Fifth Dimension, leaving the man stranded.

Years later, three Watchers, Eminence, Incarnate, and Executioner, observed Uatu and his many interferences with the multiverse. After he helped Riri Williams defeat Quentin Beck, they questioned if they should intervene. Shortly after Uatu saved Kwai Jun-Fan, the Watcher's kidnaped him and forced him to go on trial for his crimes. They recapped him on Captain Carter and informed him that she was trying to find them. They later kidnapped the captain after she tried to recruit an alternate version of Infinity Ultron.

The Watchers prepared to punish the two rebels, though they were stopped by the Guardians of the Multiverse. The heroes escaped while the Watchers fought and killed Ultron 2.0. The three Watchers then chased the heroes and destroyed their ship, leaving them on an unspecified universe. The Watchers tried to kill the heroes, though they were stopped when Uatu gave them Watcher powers. A long fight ensued, which culminated in the Watchers trying to erase every version of the heroes across all reality. However, Peggy sacrificed herself to transport them into a universe created by Strange Supreme, as it would cancel out the Watcher's powers.

Without their omnipotence, the Watchers were humbled, and The Eminence surrenders.

Abilities[]

Omnipotence: As beings from a higher plain of reality, the Watchers have the ability to interact with the fifth dimension and see other universes. Only extremely powerful beings are even able to detect their existence, such as Strange Supreme and Infinity Ultron.
Intelligence: Likely as a biproduct of their omnipotence, Watchers are shown to be extremely wise. They have a great understanding of humanity and the choices they make. They also in general appear very sophisticated.
Teleportation/Multiversal Travel: The Watchers have the ability to transport themselves and other beings across to whatever dimension they chose.
Ergokinesis: Watchers can manipulate fifth dimensional energy, which they can use to create lasers, armor, and in one case, shackles.
Fight: Watchers have the ability to levitate.
Strength and Durability: As shown with Uatu's fight with Infinity Ultron, Watchers are exceptionally strong; Uatu, a presumed weaker Watcher, was able to take on an Infinity Stone powered Ultron.
Telekinesis: Watchers can move objects with their minds
Longevity: Watchers are seemingly immortal and have been around for eons.
