~ Hollis explaining his motives while holding a child hostage |
Wayne Hollis is the main antagonist of the Criminal Minds episode "Hamelin". Hollis is a serial kidnapper who targets the children of people who falsely accused him of being a child molester, which resulted in his son Garrett committing suicide.
He was portrayed by Sean Donnellan.
Biography[]
Wayne was a computers teacher in Wesser, Iowa, who participated in curricular instruction for summer programs, until families of children found out he'd take them to parks, malls, etc. for more leisurely activities. The community spread rumors Wayne was a pedophile targeting and sexually exploiting the children of the town, so he was fired from his job after three weeks. When his son Garrett, who he presumably raised as a single father, was bullied at school because of the rumors, he hanged himself at the Hollis family home. Wayne found Garrett and, cutting him down from the rope and failing to resuscitate him, eventually buried Garrett in their backyard. Wayne wanted revenge, so he decided to terrorize the families who ruined his life by targeting their children, stalking them to find the worst parents among them as easy examples. He used his technological prowess to hack into computers when children used them at home as part of his scheme.
Wayne created audio files to provoke audio sensory meridian responses in the children once they heard the files sent directly to their emails. He'd included noises associated with locations children would regularly be at, such as a playground, and the children would be hypnotized to leave their homes and arrive at the locations, while the messages would self-delete. Wayne did this with three children in one night, kidnapping each of them at the rendezvous for holding them captive. As a signature taunt, he backmasked the word "Hamelin" into the audio recordings, in reference to the legend of the Pied Piper, who lured children out of the namesake German village to punish the villagers. he then sends an envelope with nail clippings and a flash drive with footage of the children, the message "How does it feel?" included. As one child didn't hear the audio because his electronic privileges were taken from his for avoiding his choirs, Wayne broke into the home to kidnap him personally. Wayne ended up bludgeoning the mother to death with a hatchet and then taking her son.
As an end game, Wayne goes to a public park with a loaded gun, compliments a woman holding her baby, then harasses her and insults her parenting. When she tries to leave, he holds her hostage and threatens to shoot her if the townspeople try to move. When the BAU arrives, he goes into a tirade about the lies the parents spread about him and Garrett's life being taken away. Wayne ends by professing all the children are gonna die, which he'll leave all the other families with live with, before shooting himself dead. Wayne efforts were futile, as the team found the abandoned meat plant the children were kept prisoner in, and they were all safely rescued.
Trivia[]
- Hollis is inspired by multiple real-life criminal cases:
- The disappearance of Asha Degree, a nine-year-old Black child who went missing from Shelby, North Carolina, after reportedly packing a bag and leaving her house during a blackout at night.
- William Michael Stankewicz, a disgraced elementary teacher who committed a machete attack at the school from which he was fired, over his failed marriage and reports against him for sexually abusing his daughters.
- The late Arnold Friedman, a computer technician convicted of child sexual abuse along with his son Jesse, in what is now contested as likely having derived from an unsubstantiated moral panic.
