John "Webby" Garton is a minor character in Stephen King's It and its 2019 film adaptation IT: Chapter 2. He is a homophobic teenager who attacks a gay couple he sees at a carnival.
Webby and his friends harass gay couple Adrian Mellon and his partner, Don Hagarty, after the festival they attended when Adrian won the "I love Derry" hat, making it easy for the gang to find Adrian and Don. The gang has often teased Adrian and been harsh to him for being gay, but just before a fight is about to break out, the teens are stopped by a police officer, who tells Mellon and Hagarty to leave before things get worse, which angers Webby
The teens later confront Adrian and Don at The Kissing Bridge and brutally beat upthe two men, especially Adrian. After the teens throw him over the bridge, Pennywise drags him out of the water and bites him "like he was going for his heart." while Don and Chris witness and later recall to the police. One officer mentions this to the ADA, who hotly dismisses this.
When Webby and Chris are later put on trial for Adrian's death, nobody mentions Pennywise. In the end, the two are charged with manslaughter and incarcerated.
Webby appears to be the most aggressive of the four, despite the fact that he and Chris Unwin are essentially the two leaders.
2019[]
He is the leader of a homophobic group that attacks Adrian Mellon and Don Hagarty in the 2019 movie. He severely attacks Adrian and attempts to toss him into the Derry River from a bridge, but a passing train scares him and his friends away.
Webby seems to be older than he is in the book. The actor Jake Weary plays him. He is somewhat less brutal than in the novel since, unlike in the 1986 source material, he doesn't whip out a switchblade and repeatedly stab Adrian.
