The Wendigos are the main antagonist of Screen Gems’ 2025 horror film Until Dawn. They are cannibalistic zombie-like monsters that terrorize Glore Valley.

history[]

Unlike in the games, these wendigos are not the result of cannibalism, but of death loops—a unique supernatural phenomenon where people become trapped in time loops, forced to die over and over, consumed by fear until they transform into cannibalistic monsters.

The Wendigos are one of the primary antagonists in the Until Dawn film, where five friends must escape a death loop and face new foes each night. They appear in the fourth night, after the protagonists notice their bodies beginning to change, with them losing hair and growing fangs. The group finds VHS tapes, and one of them explains that a cave-in caused the town of Glore Valley to collapse on itself, leaving few survivors. Dr. Hill was brought in, but instead of helping the survivors, he experimented on them and put them through the death loop, causing them to become Wendigos after the eleventh night. On the tape, an inmate is seen eating the other inmate. When Clover runs out into the woods and gets trapped in a bear trap, she finds her previously missing sister Melanie, now transformed into a Wendigo after having failed to survive the death loop. Horrified, Clover, Max and Megan (who both ran after Clover) begin to flee Melanie and other Wendigos. Max loses Megan when she falls through the ground and into the basement where a Wendigo drags her away, presumably killing her.

During the thirteenth and final night, Clover ends up in the Glore Valley mines and is confronted by Melanie, who she eventually kills by stabbing her. She later finds Megan locked up in a room with a chained up Wendigo in the Glore Valley Sanatorium, while her other friends are chased by the Wendigos in the mines. After eventually defeating Dr. Hill, Clover rescues Megan and the group continue fleeing the Wendigos until they make their way out, surviving until dawn, and stopping their own transformation into Wendigos.

The mining collapse of Glore Valley is similar to the mining incident in the Blackwood Mines in the game's story, though the film changes the way one transforms into a Wendigo. While someone must resort to cannibalism in the game's location, Blackwood Mountain, to become a Wendigo, in the film's location Glore Valley someone turns into a Wendigo after being consumed by fear when having been trapped in the death loop for too long. The Wendigos in the Until Dawn film are also able to be killed through knife stabs, as opposed to the game, where they can only be killed by fire.
