The Werewolf is the titular overarching antagonist of the 1981 horror comedy film An American Werewolf In London. He was a lone werewolf who was responsible for the death of Jack Goodman and was also responsible for giving the curse of lycanthropy to David Kessler.
In his human form, he was portrayed by the late Paddy Ryan.
Biography[]
When Jack and David are out on the moors of the Yorkshire village of East Procter at night, they hear a sinister howl and start to head back to the pub called The Slaughtered Lamb but realise they are lost and start running as they hear more strange animal sounds.
David trips and Jack reaches down to get him back up but the werewolf lunges out of the darkness and starts mauling Jack. David quickly gets up and runs off in fear, leaving Jack to die. After Jack dies and the werewolf runs off, David runs back to Jack and finds his corpse.
As David starts mourning over Jack's death, the werewolf comes back and attacks David but the werewolf gets shot by the pubgoers and the werewolf changes back to a dead naked man.

Trivia[]
- According to a deleted scene in An American Werewolf in Paris, the werewolf who attacked David Kessler was a former member of the werewolf society.
- While filming Jack's death scene, Rick Baker (who designed the werewolf) told Griffin Dune (the actor who portrays Jack Goodman) to be careful with the wolf's head as it was new and quite delicate. At their first take, Dunne ripped the foam rubber of the wolf's head. The irritated Baker then decided to just use a back up head and beat Dunne with it.
- In the 1997 BBC radio play version of the film, the werewolf is said to have been the brother of East Procter's special constable George Hackett (the man who told David and Jack to beware the moon as they left The Slaughtered Lamb in the film) and had escaped from a lunatic asylum the night of the full moon when he transformed and attacked David and Jack.
