He is a professor of applied microbiology at Whitmore College who covers up the death of his former roommate, Megan, and is later revealed to be a member of a secret society that studies vampires. Wes chooses Jesse as his test subject to create vampires and kills him to transition him. Afterward, he continues to study Jesse and plans to perform future experiments on him. Elena confronts Wes about Megan's death and later Katherine sedates him to remove the vervain from her system.
Katherine and Caroline try to uncover the truth behind the mysterious secret society Wes was rumored to work for. Wes reveals to them that the society is called Augustine and that new members are chosen based on their heritage and talent. He also tells them that Megan's death was not caused by an ordinary vampire, but by an "Augustine vampire". Wes is then forced to forget everything about Elena and Caroline. In a later conversation, Wes tells Katherine that her body is aging rapidly as a result of having been a vampire for over 500 years before turning back into a human. In another experiment, Wes conditions Jesse to want vampire blood instead of human blood. Finally, Wes admits that his goal is to make vampires feed off each other until the species is extinct. Jesse, conditioned by Wes, tries to feed on Damon.
Wes examines Damon for his new test subject after losing Jesse. He reveals to Aaron the truth about vampires and the Whitmore family, and gives him a vervain watch. Wes takes Elena to a new location to continue her experiments and shows her her father's research. He also lets go of Enzo to use as insurance to prevent Damon and Stefan from escaping. Wes prepares to make Elena her patient zero with her upgraded and modified composite of hers, but Stefan arrives just in time to rescue her from her. Aaron, furious at his family's lies, punches Wes in the face and disowns him.
Wes moved into an abandoned warehouse to continue his experiments on vampires, and created a deadlier version of his Ripper serum. Wes used the Travelers to trap Damon and Enzo to observe his ability to fight the hunger of his own kind after being subjected to his serum. Wes also used Katherine and her daughter Nadia to gain access to werewolf venom to create an even more rabid version of his Ripper serum. Eventually, Damon killed Wes after torturing him to experiment on him like he was experienced during his years as Augustine's vampire.
Personality[]
Wes, a professor at Whitmore College, is described as brilliant but arrogant in his knowledge of microbiology and medicine. He is a disciplinarian with his students and embarrassed Caroline and Elena when they tried to sneak into his class. Despite this, Wes shows concern for Aaron and is observant upon learning that he was drinking and gives him money for a cab. Although he is partial to vampires, he would lie to protect Aaron from the supernatural. After Aaron's death, he shows a more fearless side by taking on Damon. Wes has the makings of a mad scientist experimenting on innocent humans to create his Ripper serum, but he makes sure to take safety precautions and only creates what he can control.
