The White Rabbit, or simply the Rabbit, is the main antagonist of the first season of Netflix's 2025 animated action fantasy series Devil May Cry. He is loosely based on the character of the same name from the manga.

Formerly a human turned Artificial Demon, he lead a gang of Demons in a plot to destroy the barrier separating the Human World and Makai with the end-goal of enacting revenge against DARKCOM to save the low-level Demons from oppression on both sides and bring them to a new peaceful place to call home and is willing to do whatever it takes to complete this plan. After obtaining Sparda's sword, the Force Edge, and Vergil's amulet, he sets out to find Dante's amulet so he can put the two together for the sword.

He was voiced by Hoon Lee, who also voiced Shredder from Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as well as Splinter in the 2012 TMNT series. In the Japanese dub , he is voiced by Ryōtarō Okiayu, who also voiced Roman Bridger in the Japanese dub of Scream 3.

Biography[]

Background[]

The White Rabbit was originally a human child with a love for Lewis Carroll's book “Alice in Wonderland” who was raised by an abusive foster family. One day, he ended up in Makai and would be raised by a family of low-level demons who struggled to survive in the cruel conditions of Mundus' reign. He would develop a method to locate portals leading to the human world for them to use until DARKCOM killed them and he barely survived. Following the massacre, he converted himself into an artificial demon, with the appearance of the White Rabbit from the book, in order to exact his revenge against DARKCOM and save the low-level demons of Makai after they murdered his family and friends. He used his device to relocate many of the low-level demons and experiments on the orphans into soldiers.

He then made a deal with Nelo Angelo (who he knows is actually Vergil, the other son of Sparda) to help him bring both the Force Edge and Dante's amulet so he can destroy the barrier between the Human World and Makai, in exchange for Nelo giving his blood.

Season 1[]

At some point he hired a group of mercenaries to start a heist at the Vatican Museums, steals Force Edge, a sword once owned by the legendary demon Sparda, who turned against his own kind and created a magical barrier between Hell and Earth. The Rabbit massacres the men he hired before blowing up the building, and announces his plan to destroy the barrier between realms and usher in the apocalypse.

He then blackmails a soldier named Anders to keep an eye on DARKCOM or he will murder his daughters, so Anders is forced to comply. Later after DARKCOM captured Dante, the White Rabbit and his enforcers: Cavaliere, Echidna, Plasma, Agni, and Rundra, ambush DARKCOM's convoy and engage Mary's team. The Rabbit entered the convoy where Anders and Dr. Fisher are in, and Anders willingly gives him Dante's amulet. The Rabbit combines it with his half of the amulet, but Fisher realizes that he still requires another component before the barrier between realms can be destroyed. The Rabbit then kills Fisher, wounds Anders, and takes Enzo hostage. Dante breaks free from his containment and pursues the Rabbit, but is almost killed when the bomb Lady implanted in his neck explodes. The Rabbit then refers to Dante as Sparda's son and takes him captive.

Lady’s team tracked the White Rabbit in his lair with a tracker on the Amulet. However, it was a trap by the Rabbit as Cavaliere and Echidna murders Lady’s squadron with Lady being the only survivor. Meanwhile, the White Rabbit captured Dante, Enzo, Baines and other hostages in a plane with Agni and Rundra threatening to bomb the plane if Dante doesn’t awaken his demon powers. The Rabbit then contacted with Dante and Lady, reveals his plan to break the barrier between Earth and Makai, by using Dante’s blood. The Rabbit then travels to Makai to meet up with Nelo Angelo for his own blood as they agreed, and returned to Earth to await Dante’s arrival.

The White Rabbit lures Dante onto a rooftop under the threat of a demonic invasion. There, the Rabbit holds Lady hostage and shows Dante the wastelands of Makai in an attempt to recruit him to the demons' side. Dante rejects his offer, and the Rabbit orders Cavaliere Angelo and the rest of his forces to attack Dante.

The Rabbit reveals his true face to Lady, who recognizes him as the human that her team attacked years prior. As the Rabbit prepares to kill Lady, Dante manages to arrive just in time to save her. The Rabbit then allows himself to fall into a river.

The White Rabbit survives the fall and encounters one of his minions, Bloodstrike, whom he kills. After drinking Bloodstrike's blood, the Rabbit mutates into a giant demon and begins to wreak havoc on the city, culminating in him and Dante getting into a duel, which Enzo sacrifices himself to save Dante. The Rabbit successfully stabs Dante with Force Edge and uses his blood to break the barrier to Makai, causing swarms of demons to begin appearing. While the Rabbit is distracted, Lady shoots his heart implant, giving Dante an opening to impale the Rabbit with Force Edge. With his final moments, the White Rabbit tells Dante that he'll never be accepted by humanity or the demons, before Dante slices him in half, killing the White Rabbit for good.

Personality[]

The White Rabbit poses a sophisticated manner, chatting with his enemies affably while showing his sadism to any of his enemies specifically the humans. At several points in the show, Rabbit openly mocks Dante for his mixed heritage and being the son of Sparda, the legendary dark knight who rebelled against his own kind. He blames Sparda for the pain of what the lesser demons are put through in the demon world, as he compares it to being locked in the same cell with the more evil and powerful demons like Mundus. In his eyes, Sparda was an egotist who sought praise from humans while leaving behind his own kind to suffer. It wasn't made any better when some of the demon refugees he brought over were being hunted and killed by humans. In his quest to help his "kind", Rabbit desires to merge the human and demon world together so the lesser demon population can freely walk over to the human world and was willing to do whatever it takes to complete this goal.

As it turns out, he is actually a human wearing a rabbit mask and was keeping himself alive by creating an artificial heart pumping with demon blood, which would make him an artificial demon in a way. Many years ago, Rabbit was an orphan with a love for Lewis Caroll's Alice in Wonderland but lived in an abusive household. Feeling unloved, he landed into the demon world and raised by the lesser demons of that realm. He grew to love his new family and started to view himself as one of them. He created a device to help them cross over to the human world, but after being confronted by Darkcom, he was left horrified by their actions of gunning down his friends and family. After Darkcom robbed him of his lifetime, he swore revenge on them and plotted through his years to enact his plans.

Despite his justifications, Rabbit is a hypocrite and is just as bad as the humans he claims to despise. Not only he is just as ruthless as them but constantly excuses his atrocities as "something that had to be done". Rabbit was experimenting on the lesser demons and forcing them to work with him even though they just want to live peacefully in the human world. Rabbit doesn't even see how illogical his plan is as he is literally damning both the humans and lesser demons to suffer by breaking the barrier, which would lead the powerful and evil demons to cross over. He also doesn't care if humans are suffering and end up dying from his attempts to open the hell gate. As revealed by Mary, he is mainly upset with DARKCOM for killing his foster family and with it being the centerpiece of his revenge scheme. All in all, Rabbit is so hyper fixated on his quest for revenge on DARKCOM that he is willing to destroy humanity and even members of demonkind as payback for his suffering.

Powers and Abilities[]

Artificial Demon Physiology[]

In addition to his astounding genius-level intellect and surprisingly strong swordsmanship skills, the artificial heart which pumps and regulates demonic blood in his body, the White Rabbit developed superhuman strength, speed, and regeneration.

  • Superhuman Strength: Upon becoming an artificial demon, the White Rabbit's strength was enhanced beyond the levels of the finest human athletes as well as low-level demons. The White Rabbit could effortlessly kill a human mercenary in top physical conditioning with a single blow to his body with his arm. The White Rabbit can also use the Sword of Sparda to to easily slice the finest human soldiers into pieces. However, his strength was inferior compared to the likes of Dante.
  • Superhuman Speed: Upon becoming an artificial demon, the White Rabbit's mobility, dexterity, and reflexes were enhanced beyond the levels of the finest human athletes and low-level demons. He could move faster than the human eye can see able to slice up several human mercenaries into pieces within an instant. He can also use his superhuman speed in tandem with the Sword of Sparda to easily keep up with and block ballistic attacks with the blade of a sword.
  • Regenerative Healing Factor: With the restorative properties of the demon blood circulating his veins thanks to his artificial heart, the White Rabbit developed a regenerative healing factor. When one of DARKCOM's anti-demon bullets hit his left arm, the damage had fully healed within a few seconds. He was also unaffected from being the blast radius of many bombs he had set around the Vatican's chambers.
  • Superhuman Immunity: As artificial demon, the White Rabbit was immune to the effects of DARKCOM's anti-demon bullets. This also extends to his immense tolerance for pain, when he had stitched the White Rabbit mask to his face. He can even breathe the toxic air of the demon world without any negative effects.
  • Genius-Level Intellect: Even as a human, the White Rabbit showed a very impressive level of intelligence and knowledge of engineering, science, mysticism, and alchemy. He had managed to deduce the paternal origins of Dante, and was even able to deduce Vergil's true identity as Dante's twin brother who was believed to be deceased.
    • Alchemical Knowledge: Using a few resources, he somehow managed to create a device that opens rifts from Makai to Earth, allowing his allies and low-level demon refugees to pass through. He performed an experimental surgery on himself to make him an artificial demon, allowing him superhuman abilities. He even conducted inhumane experiments on demonic orphans in order to enhance their powers.
    • Master Manipulator: The White Rabbit has surprising skilled manipulator with impressive oratory skills and managed to convive many disenfranchised demons to become his allies in his cause getting revenge on DARKCOM. He managed to orchestrate an incredibly complex plan to destroy DARKCOM by reuniting the Sword of Sparda with the two amulets to open the barrier that separates the two worlds and had almost come close to succeeding. He even managed to convince Vergil to let him keep the Sword of Sparda for their cause. Even DARKCOM believed he was a demon due to the demon blood in his veins, preventing them for figuring out his true identity as a human. He even tricked a bunch of highly skilled human mercenaries to break into the Vatican's chambers so that the White Rabbit can sneak in and get the Sword of Sparda without sounding the alarm.
  • Swordsmanship: The White Rabbit is a highly skilled swordsman, being capable of using the Sword of Sparda in tandem with his superhuman speed to easily block and deflect ballistic attacks, fight off DARKCOM's best soldiers easily, as well as fight someone like Dante in his human form.
  • Portal Manipulation: The White Rabbit managed to build a device which extends the time a rift between the human and demon world remains open to an unspecified degree.

Demonic Empowerment[]

Upon consuming the blood of a demon called Blood-Strike, the White Rabbit mutated into a powerful juggernaut of a demon. In this form his strength, speed, and durability was further increased to the point where he was able to go toe-to-toe with someone like Dante, as well as even get the upper hand on him. However, even in this empowered form, the White Rabbit was no match for Dante when he was in his "Devil Trigger" form.

Trivia[]

  • The White Rabbit is based on a similar character of the same name from one of the Devil May Cry mangas, specifically Code 1: Dante. In it, he is a mysterious demon with unclear motives, who has hired Dante in saving a little girl named Alice but it is revealed that he wanted to see how the sons of Sparda are presenting themselves to the world.
    • Despite both being Alice in Wonderland-themed and revealing to Dante that Vergil is alive, the Netflix version is much different since he is not only human but also an artificial demon with a hatred towards humans when his lifetime was robbed by Darkcom.
  • The White Rabbit is one of the three people (alongside Dante and Lady), who tragically lost a family (mostly his adoptive family)
