Why-man is the main antagonist of the manga and anime series Dr. Stone. It is the name given to the source that was behind the mysterious powerful radio waves and is the cause of the petrification that took place over three thousand years ago. It is a biomechanical organism with extraterrestrial origins.

After the members of the Kingdom of Science were able to defeat Ibara, the Why-man attempted to petrify all of humanity a second time through a signal disguised to sound like Senku's voice.

Upon Senku's arrival to the Moon, he and his crew would soon discover that the true identity of Why-man had been in front of them the entire time. It is revealed that the Petrification devices they call "Medusas" are actually living parasites that are part of Why-man's hivemind.

Personality[]

The true nature of Why-man was unknown for awhile. When Senku and members of the Kingdom of Science were able to use the radio wave, the Why-man communicated to them using Morse code, "why" multiple times. While the Why-man's true personality is mysterious, they attempted to have all of humanity petrified after Senku and the Kingdom of Science defeated Ibara. This shows that they prefer for humanity to be petrified. When Chrome, Senku, and the Kingdom of Science realizes that Why-man's recent message translates to "Do you wanna die?". Senku, Gen, and others speculate that the Why-man is warning them and that the Why-man has a will of its own.

It is revealed that the Why-man has vested interest in perserving life and that it thinks that by petrifying humanity, it is giving humanity the solution of not facing death. Gen, Senku, and some members of the Kingdom of Science, realize that the Why-man does not consider negotiations beforehand and instead makes decisions that they think would benefit humanity. Why-man has shown to not understand why humanity would prefer not to be petrified and would ask "why".

In spite of humanity's defiance to the Why-man, it was shown to forceful by making attempts to petrify humanity once again. Despite being a major threat to Senku and the Kingdom of Science, it is open to revealing as much information about itself and its reasons for its actions to humanity.

Biography[]

Why-man makes their presence known when Senku, Ukyo, and the Kingdom of Science were able to make a radar and sonar, they were able to pick up a signal from an unknown source in an unknown location. The signal kept on repeating the word why multiple times. Senku speculates that this signal is coming from the being that was responsible for the petrification of humanity over three millennia ago. After some time, the signal ended leaving many to wonder what it was and where it came from.

When the Kingdom of Science managed to defeat Ibara in the Petrification Kingdom, they were about to get back into contact with other members of the Kingdom of Science on a different island. However, the signal from the Kingdom of Science was interrupted by a new signal by a being using a synthesized version of Senku's voice. The voice attempted to send a command to the petrification device the Kingdom of Science got hold of after defeating Ibara and attempted to have it petrify the entire Earth in one second. The attempt failed since the petrification weapon could not take the command from the signal.

When Senku heard Matsukaze's story about the time that dozens of petrification weapons rained from the skies over 100 years ago, Senku came to the conclusion that the Why-man is located on the Moon. After leaving San Francisco, Senku and his group head for South America the original source of the petrification beam. It is revealed that Dr. Xeno (who was held captive) is aware of Why-man too and its location on the Moon.

When the battle between Stanley Snyder's forces and the Kingdom of Science intensifies, Senku has Joel procure one of the petrification devices. Since Senku and his team are losing in their battle against Stanley's forces and had to change their initial plan to petrify Stanley and his supporters, Senku and Joel use this opportunity to allow one of the Why-man's radio signals to reach the petrification device to petrify all of humanity on Earth. The plan succeeds and the remainder of humans on Earth are petrified. Despite succeeding in petrifying humanity, Suika is eventually depetrified by the revival fluid as part of Senku's plan to revive humanity.

Seven years after the global petrification event, the Kingdom of Science speculates that the Why-man went inactive. However, they picked up another radio signal from the Moon. When Chrome points out that the Why-man's usual message is not "why", he notice the message is in English. After deciphering the message, it is revealed that the Why-man is telling the Kingdom of Science "Do you wanna die?" repeatedly in its message which makes the whole team go silent. Francios responds back to Why-man, but the signal stops. Senku and their allies discuss the Why-man and continue to put forth their resolve to want to meet Why-man on the Moon.

As Senku, Kohaku, Stanley, and Ryusui make it to the Moon to confront the Why-man. The Why-man gives an order to Kohaku using Senku's voice to release the petrification device. Ryusui and others realize that it is not Senku who gave the order and that Why-man attempted to petrify them. Senku, Kohaku, and Stanley make it to the dark mass on the Moon, only to find a pile of petrification devices. The group finally realize that all this time the Why-man were the petrification devices themselves, the Medusa. One of them floating within the container that Senku brought communicates to the group and asks if they wanted to die. The group realizes that Why-man prioritizes life and attempt to make a deal with the Why-man where they would replenish the life forces of the petrification devices with diamond batteries. The Why-man states that it will reveal information about why humanity was turned to stone.

Turns out the Why-man are the petrification devices themselves, who are actually a highly advanced parasite alien species who petrified humanity in an attempt to offer them the benefits of the suspended animation granted by the petrification in exchange for humanity to build more petrification devices and ensure their species' survival. However, humanity took much longer to break free from petrification than they had expected, and even after that, they rejected their "gift", confusing the Why-man and causing it to ask the repeated questions the Kingdom of Science had heard from them.

In the end, Senku offers his help to rebuild the malfunctioned petrification devices, but the devices decide to leave Earth with the exception of one of them, which Senku and his team take back home.
