The Wicked Fairy Godmother is the main antagonist of the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty by Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm. She is an elderly evil fairy that curses Sleeping Beauty after the king and queen did not invite her to her christening.
Biography[]
A king and queen have a baby girl after a long period of being childless. To celebrate, the king and queen hold a christening and invite the Fairies who live in the kingdom to attend and to be the Princess's godmothers. However, they do not invite the Wicked Fairy Godmother because nobody has seen her leave her tower in many years and has been pronounced dead.
At the party, the Fairies give the Princess various magical gifts and as the last Fairy is about to give her gift, the Wicked Fairy Godmother appears at the christening. Angry and hurt that she was not invited, the Wicked Fairy curses the princess to prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die when she turns fifteen. The Wicked Fairy Godmother then immediately leaves the christening. The last Good Fairy revises the curse partially as the Wicked Fairy Godmother's magic is too powerful to undo completely. Instead of dying when she pricks her finger, the Princess will sleep for one hundred years and be awaken by a prince when the one hundred years pass. In an attempt to keep the curse from being fulfilled completely, the King and Queen order that all spinning wheels be destroyed. When the Princess turns fifteen, she finds an old woman in the castle spinning on a spinning wheel. Wanting to try spinning on the spinning wheel herself, the Princess pricks her finger on the spindle and she instantly falls asleep, fulfilling the Wicked Fairy Godmother's evil spell. In countless adaptations, the old woman is the Wicked Fairy Godmother in disguise. One hundred years pass, and the Princess is awakened by the kiss of a Prince, whom she marries. It is completely unknown what happened to the Wicked Fairy Godmother as she is never mentioned or seen for the remainder of the fairy tale. In some versions it is said that the Evil Fairy Godmother tried to kill the prince to prevent him from saving the princess but the prince finally ended up killing her.
Ballet[]
In Tchaikovsky's ballet adaptation of Sleeping Beauty, The Wicked Fairy Godmother is named Carabosse and entered each time to ominous music. Carabosse arrives with her rat minions and curses the princess to die when she pricks herself on the spindle on a spinning wheel. On the princess's 15th birthday, Carabosse in disguise visits and gives the princess a spindle which she pricks her finger on and falls asleep. In Matthew Bourne's reimagining of the story, the king and queen driven in despair seek her help who gives them a daughter (Aurora), however the king forgets to express his gratitude and she curses the child. Years later when Aurora is in her early twenties, Carabosse has died in exile but her son, Caradoc attempts to exact revenge and seduce Aurora.
Other Versions[]
Disney[]
- Main article: Maleficent (Disney)
In the 1959 Disney animated version of Sleeping Beauty, the character of the wicked fairy godmother is personified in Maleficent, a dark sinister fairy who is the "Mistress of All Evil". She lays a curse on the princess (called Aurora here, as in Tchaikovsky's ballet) and the fairies plan to take the princess away and hide her in an abandoned woodcutter's cottage to protect her. Maleficent's monstrous minions hunt for Aurora in years to come, and on her 16th birthday Aurora returns to the palace and pricks her finger on a spinning wheel magically conjured up by Maleficent.
When Maleficent learns that Prince Phillip is in love with the princess, she captures him and locked in the dungeons of her mountain castle for 100 years so that he will be too old and feeble to free and marry Aurora. When the good fairies help him escape, Maleficent creates a forest of thorns and later transforms into a giant black dragon to do battle with the hero. Prince Phillip defeats the evil fairy with his Sword of Truth, killing her by throwing the sword into her heart. She then falls off a cliff and all that's left of Maleficent is her robe.
Jetlag[]
The fairy also appears in Jetlag Productions' Sleeping Beauty, named Odelia in this version. At the time of the christening of the princess, Felicity, Odelia is believed dead, but the fairy appears to give her gift to the child, the gift of death, as one week after Felicity's 16th birthday, she is to prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and fall dead (an extremely meaningless act of revenge on Felicty's parents for not inviting her). Odelia disguises as an old spinning woman (somewhat a spinster) like in the original fairytale, and hands Felicity the spindle and she accidentally pricks her index finger. Throughout 100 years (and a day later), many princes and noble men try to break Odelia's spell, until Prince Richard and his faithful steed overcome the many obstacles to reach the sleeping Felicity and put an end to Odelia's curse and her own life. She is killed by spirit of the 7th fairy, who lost all powers to put castle to sleep, and spent hundred years and one day as a pink-red rose flower.
