I think it's our lucky night, Widco
~ Kallisca to Widco as they corner Tatonka

Widco is a major antagonist in the French computer-generated television series, Tales of Tatonka. He is a male coyote, part of Kallisca's gang alongside his brother Maslika, and the two brothers constantly argue over who should be the chief between the two of them.

He was voiced by Lionel Tua in the original French version and by Brian Bowles in the UK English version.

Appearence[]

Widco is a coyote with a primarily dark reddish-brown coat, with white paws and orange eyes like Kallisca and Maslika.

Personality[]

Widco is one of Kallisca's followers, he is known for being brash, and often trying to outwit his brother Maslika or assert himself when he thinks Kallisca isn't watching, but quickly falls back and coward in fear in line when challenged by Kallisca himself or when a more powerful opponent like Tork or Wicasa and his wolf pack appears when they are on their territory.

History[]

Season 1[]

End of Rainbow: Widco first appears when he and Maslika spot Wanji, Cinksi and Yamni near the waterfall. Kallisca arrives at that moment and questions his followers about why they aren't waiting for him. Widco tries to explain but Maslika says that his brother wanted to be leader instead of Kallisca. An angry Kallisca tackles Widco to the ground reminding him that he is the leader before howling with Maslika scaring the cubs. Kallisca allows Widco to get up and orders him and Maslika to find their prey. The three coyotes manage to corner the cubs on the canyon arch, but Moose comes to his friends' rescue and make Kallisca fall, scaring Widco and Maslika who run away.

Save Tatonka: Widco and Kallisca, without Maslika, discovered Tatonka the bison one evening while he was stuck in the mud. The two coyotes decided to target him, lying there all night waiting for him to be weak enough before attacking him. The next day, they spotted Wanji, Cinksi, Tap-Tap, Wahi, and Moose trying to help Tatonka. They growled at them, and the youngsters left without the coyotes knowing that Wanji had a plan. Widco and Kallisca tried to attack Tatonka, believing he was weak enough for them to attack without risk. But when Wahi feigned to be danger, Tatonka regained his strength and growled at the coyotes before climbing out of the mud. Widco and Kalliska then ran away.

Howling at the Moon: One night in the desert, the four wolf cubs had a howling contest at the moon. Their howls attracted the attention of Widco, Kallisca, and Maslika, who were drinking nearby. The coyotes began to howl in turn, fooling the wolf cubs into thinking they were stray wolves. This allows them to find the cubs. Wahi tries to alert his friends, but having damaged his voice trying to howl as well, he is unable to do so. The coyotes begin to chase the group, but Wahi attracts the attention of Widco and Maslika and makes them slide onto Kallisca. Widco then helps Maslika get unstuck after he gets his head stuck in a tree trunk. The three coyotes manage to corner Wahi, but the cubs lure them straight into rattlesnakes, which scare them away.

Delicious but Dangerous: One spring, Widco, searching for food for himself and his companions, ventures alone into Mato's territory. There he finds a snake he covets, but is frightened by the bear. Having found nothing, the coyote returns to his fellows and Kallisca decides that they should look at the acorn trees to find prey that feed in these trees. Later, they spot Pahin feeding in an acorn tree, but Widco is talking too loudly, and Pahin spots them. The Porcupine curls up into a ball as the coyote trio surrounds him, but before they can attack, Mato reappears and scares them off. Unbeknownst to them, the wolf cubs had spotted them and warned Mato.

A Terrible Roar: Widco and Kalliska appear as cameos, with the renegade wolf taking on the role of the main antagonist of this episode. The two coyotes spot Moose returning to his herd before leaving the area.

A Taste of Freedom: Widco, Maslika, and Kallisca are hunting in the region after winter. They come across Wahi, Poum, Wanji, and Cinksi. They ambush the last two, but Wanji scares them off by threatening to call the pack, against which the coyotes are no match. The trio decides to fall back on Poum and Wahi, but while trying to devour them at night, they are scared off by Mato once again.

The Night of the Shooting Stars: Widco with Kallisca, and Maslika attack the group while they are in the mountains watching shooting stars. Widco taunts them saying how bad encounters they can have in the middle of the night outside the den. The group led by Nunpa resists them, while Luta and Ska are afraid of the coyotes. But soon, they hear a feline cry, believing it to be Tork the Puma, as they are in his territory, the coyotes become frightened and run away.

Season 2[]

A Great Danger: Widco and his gang were fleeing the meadow fire during the summer. At one point, he and Maslika lost sight of Kallisca and encountered Luta and Ska. They cornered them near the waterfall, and Widco told his brother they could eat them without having to share with their leader. But Kallisca appeared, and when he told his companions that they would only eat the leftovers, Widco protested, which angered Kallisca. But at that moment, Wanji, posing as Wicasa, appeared at the top of the waterfall and howled to summon the pack. Widco, believing it to be the pack, suggested they flee, and Maslika followed him.

Drought: During the drought, Widco and Maslika go to the lake to drink. On the way, they argue over who will drink first. Widco replies that he should do so because Kalliska prefers him, but at that moment, Kalliska belittles them by saying that he is the chief and drinks first. But while they are drinking, they see Tork, who scares them with a mere look and makes them run away.

Panic: As winter approaches, the elk herd prepares for its migration. The coyotes decide to venture into wolf territory to attack the herd. Widco decides to target Moose (presumably as revenge for the young elk pushing Kallisca into the void, in order to gain favour from his chief), but Maslika provokes him by telling him that the best part always goes to the chief, and they begin to argue again over who should be the chief between them. Kallisca interrupts and threatens to feed them only if one of them brings a raven as an appetizer. After the earthquake, the trio chase the elks to a crevasse but are chased off by Wicasa and the pack.

Wahi’s Ancestor: On a stormy spring day, Widco and his gang are very hungry and begin to weaken, losing the strength to pursue their prey. Despite this, Widco try to impose himself as chief to Maslika by telling him that he is in charge when their boss isn’t here. But the two speak too loudly that it prevents Kalliska from catching a snake, then a crow. Kalliska reprimands them severely and reminds them once and for all that he is the chief, ordering them to find prey. Widco then finds the footprints of the wolf cubs, Cinksi and Wahi, but Wambli notices them. After noticing the wolf cubs and Cinksi, Widco and his brother begin arguing again, this time over who will eat first. They jostle each other, preventing them from reaching their prey. Widco then notices the bones of a long-dead squirrel, which they cannot gnaw because they are hard as rock, and they then set off in pursuit of Yamni and Wahi. Finally they are confronted by the whole gang but at that moment, Hail starts to fall, which destabilises the coyotes who run away never to be seen again.

Trivia[]

  • Despite trying to undermine his leader Kallisca, Widco is terrified of him and immediately falls in line when challenged.
  • Widco and Maslika are similar to Pain and Panic, Hades' servants in Hercules, due to the fact that they constantly fail at his simplest tasks and blame each other for incompetence.
  • The name "Widco" does not come from any documented Native American language, folk term, or etymological root. It was likely invented or stylized by French designers at Cyber Group Studios, perhaps for its phonetic appeal or to evoke a sly, whimsical sound reminiscent of the trickster coyote archetype in Native American narratives (where coyotes are commonly referred to by terms like "mąʼii" in Navajo or "Itsappa" in Shoshone, but nothing matches "Widco").
  • Widco and Kallisca are the only antagonist in the series to directly target Tatonka.
