~ Wild Knuckles to the Vicious 6 in the film's climax, and his most famous quote.

Henry "Wild" Knuckles is the overarching protagonist of Illumination's 12th full-length feature film Minions: The Rise of Gru, the sequel to the 2015 film Minions and the second prequel in the Despicable Me franchise.

He was a legendary supervillain, as well as the founder and leader of the Vicious 6, until they betrayed him for the Zodiac Stone. After that, he takes the role as young Gru's parental figure and assists him in defeating his former teammates.

He was voiced by the late Alan Arkin in his final film role, who also portrayed Harry Roat, Jr. in Wait Until Dark.

Personality[]

Wild Knuckles is the founder of the Vicious 6 and is considered to be the best. He was very committed to his team, willing to share the power of the Zodiac Stone with them before he was betrayed. Wild Knuckles has a deep desire to be a part of a team, and to be said team's leader. After his original team left him, he hired a band of criminals to be a part of his new team, although they only seemed to care about being paid. Once they left, Wild Knuckles stopped his plans of killing Gru and instead decided to mentor him. After bonding with Gru as his mentor, he became willing to risk his life in order to save him.

Wild Knuckles, even in his old age, is very dedicated to committing crimes. He dedicated his entire life to being a power-hungry thief, going so far as to steal from the Bank of Evil. Wild Knuckle's life of crime allowed him to build himself a wealthy empire, owning a large manor in San Fransisco.

Biography[]

Minions: Rise of Gru[]

The film starts with the Vicious 6, headed by the legendary Wild Knuckles, who goes on the quest with his team and retrieves the Zodiac Stone. After passing a few trials, he successfully retrieves the stone, but is betrayed by Belle Bottom, Nun Chuck, Jean Clawed, Svengeance, and Stronghold. They then attempted to kill him by throwing him off their plane. He ended up surviving this and going back to San Fransisco.

Knuckles was later seen back in San Fransisco with his henchman, telling them that they will be paid with "experience" as he proceeded to fight one of them.

Knuckles' henchmen capture Gru after finding out he possessed the stone. Gru is excited to meet his idol, but Knuckles is angry to find that Gru doesn’t have the Stone. He contacts Gru's home to attempt to get a ransom, and when the Minions pick up he tells them that they only have a couple of days to bring him what he wants before Gru would be killed.

Gru was put onto a torture device involving a giant record that would eventually cut him in half with a razor. Soon after this, his henchmen quit on him after their run-in with Master Chow. After they did so, he freed Gru from the device, as he needed someone to help him with things around the home. While cleaning his pool full of crocodiles, Knuckles falls in, but Gru was able to save him, causing Knuckles to realize that Gru would make a great student. He then brings Gru along to a heist involving the Bank of Evil, where he posed as his grandfather and Gru as his grandson. Knuckles pretends to have a heart attack so Gru can swipe the keys of Mr. Perkins. Gru manages to steal the Mona Lisa, making Knuckles proud.

After the 6 got word of Knuckles' possession of Gru, they went to Knuckles’ house and tore it apart looking for them. When Gru and Knuckles return to find the house destroyed, Knuckles admits that he no longer has anything and tells Gru to leave.

Later in the movie, Knuckles shows up to save Gru, along with Kevin, Stuart, and Bob. Knuckles was Belle's main focus, fighting him with her fiery breath. She ends up overpowering him, causing him to fall to the ground limp. After they are defeated by Gru, they are all arrested, including Knuckles.

Later at a funeral, Gru is seen giving him a touching eulogy, only to find that Knuckles faked his death and is hiding. After the Minions give a Minion rendition of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”, Gru rejoins his idol, and they drive off into the sunset with the rest of the Minions.

Trivia[]

  • Despite Wild Knuckles getting double-crossed by his own team, the Vicious 6, he did however manage to extract his revenge for betrayal with the help of Gru and his Minions, who defeated them by turning them into rats and allow the Anti-Villain League to apprehend them.
    • Before then Wild Knuckles was revealed to be lonely and all he ever wanted was a team. Unfortunately, his second in command Belle Bottom betrayed him for nothing. Later when he met Gru after kidnapping him, he never turned his back on him which made him a family he never had.
  • In the Polish Version, he is called Wściekły Kułak, which translates to “Angry Kulak”.
  • In the Latin American Version, he is called Willy Kobra.
  • In the Russian Version, he is called "Дед Кастет" (lat. Ded Kastet), which translates to "Grandpa Knuckle".
  • Wild Knuckles is the second Despicable Me villain who has a sense of honor for all villainy (especially for Gru) since El Macho when he wanted Gru to join forces with him so he can share his world domination with him, and Dru when he hopes his brother Gru would teach him how to be a good villain.
  • Wild Knuckles was the only villain not imprisoned in Despicable Me 4, implying he died prior to the first film.
  • The scene where Wild Knuckles stands up to Belle Bottom has become a subject for Wild Knuckles standing up to various villains on YouTube.
  • Wild Knuckles foreshadowed the first installment of Despicable Me franchise, as after the funeral, he tells Gru to "Shoot to the Moon", foreshadowing Gru's upcoming heist to steal the Moon.
