I'm not proud about what I put my subjects through. Like me, they had once been... human. Pain was still... pain. But I had to make things right no matter the cost to redeem my betrayal with the Van Helsings.
~ Willem to Violet and Jack
Doing all of this, fighting back against the darkness, loving us despite why you made us, it doesn't make up for the things you've done. The people you've killed. Like Avery.
~ Violet to Willem

Biography[]

Charlotte: You! You are one of them.
Willem: Please, ma'am.
Charlotte: You are the reason my family has been betrayed, and they're now adrift.
Willem: Kill me if you must but there are things you can only learn from me.
Charlotte: You have ruined us!
Willem: I did, it's true. But I can still help your cause. I swear it.
Charlotte: After all the evil that you have done? What good could you possibly do?
Willem: Destroy them from within. Kill the Dark One forever.
~ Willem and Charlotte Van Helsing

Centuries ago, Willem was the apprentice of Jacob Van Helsing. However, he was turned into a vampire by Bathory, the Oracle to serve Dracula (aka the Dark One) as one of his brides, and was forced to turn Jacob into a vampire too.

Despite their instincts, what was left of Van Helsings regained their trust on Willem, allowing him to keep things that they thought held only sentimental value. They didn't know the magical pages (the first two pages opens the portal from Earth, while the last one opens it from "Dracula's prison world") were behind his painting, to help the cause and to protect the knowledge of how to liberate the Dark One from the other brides. Even if that meant keeping it from the Van Helsings. Willem created enough doubt in Bathory's mind about Michaela (and the Sisterhood) and her jealousy that she had her locked away. He performed his part for the Oracle and told her he was researching ways how to strengthen vampire kind so Dracula would have an army.

In truth, Willem was searching only for a weapon that would kill his "master". At first, he sought a chemical solution; torturing and experimenting on other vampires. For decades, centuries, the world carried on around him. He needed to take a new form to secure the position he required; Hansen. So that he could discover the terrible world of eugenics. He had the pages, but failed for so long to create the weapon. However, he knew the Third Reich had the means; cross-breeding and DNA manipulation. Their evil paved a certain sinister path that Willem reluctantly followed. He took what he discovered in their bunker and years later he founded Blak Tek so he could finally make the perfect weapon to destroy Dracula; Violet and Jack Van Helsing.

The next step in what Vanessa and Scarlett Van Helsing were, a hybridization of the very best of humanity. An antidote to the Dark One, using his own blood weaponized in them. One bite could destroy Dracula forever. Willem wanted to tell his daughters the truth, but something happened along the way. Once created, the two went from weapon he needed to children he loved. And as years went by and they grew, he wondered if any of this would be necessary at all, since Dracula was locked away and the pages were protected. He just wanted his the two to have happy, normal lives and keep them safe from the evil of the world.

And on the day of the rising, everything changed. Willem knew that day safety would be gone. So he sent a vampire to protect Jack. In a world overrun with vampires, Bathory might find her own pathway to Dracula, and that one day, whether he liked it or not, Violet and Jack would be needed. Eventually, his betrayal was discovered by Bathory and Michaela, who tortured him and made him prisoner. However, he was rescued by Violet and told her and Jack the truth. He sacrificed himself to detain Bathory, but was killed by her.
