William Hafner is a major antagonist in the Lupin the 3rd PART 2 episode "A Wedding Dress Doesn't Suit Fujiko".
He was a rich collector who was known to be married numerous times and was believed to be the one who killed his brides, although there was no physical proof of his actions. He was voiced by Iemasa Kayumi, who also voiced Kyōsuke Mamō from Lupin the 3rd PART 1.
Biography[]
He made his first appearance when He and Fujiko Mine were at a church as it was revealed that He and Fujiko were tying the knot. However just as there were wed, Lupin (who was on the roof of the building across the church) took out a gun and shot Fujiko, which resulted in her being dead. Horrified that his bride died within minutes, of their wedding, Hafner decide to take her back to his home, where he is seen with a room filled of pictures of his previous wives, with a photo of Fujiko with a #100 above the frame. Hafner's butler then informs him if he should be looking for the next Mrs. Hafner and he approved it, even asking how Fujiko doing. As Hafner is taking a drink, he revealed that he was disappointed that he wasn't the one who killed Fujiko, just like he did to the others and decide to go to his secret room, which contained of what seems at first to be life size mannequins of his former wives in different positions, including a chair that had the #100 on it, meaning those mannequins are actually his real late wives and it meant for Fujiko.
The next day as Hafner and his butler prepared to make Fujiko another one of his collection, where he replaces her old ring with a newer one, only for Fujiko (who was revealed not to be died by pretending as it seems that the bullet that hit Fujiko didn't kill her but put her into a deep sleep for 24 hours) to awaken to the shock of Hafner as he learns that she wasn't dead. This however made Hafner happy as Fujiko notice the mannequins and was told that they are real and that Hafner really did kill his wives (a rumor that Fujiko refused to believe in the beginning) and was excited because now he'll get the chance to kill her himself, even using a wipe as his weapon of choice.
Luckily Lupin, Jigen and Goemon arrived in the nick of time and rescue Fujiko. telling them he doesn't kill men, he revealed that one of his mannequins' wives is a fake and that he had her aimed at Lupin if he moves, he notice one of them lifted her arms up and began to shot bullets at Lupin, who not only dodged but also manage to make a direct hit, resulted in the mannequin to blow up but not before killing Hafner with a bullet to the chest.
As Hafner was about to die from the gunshot wound, he revealed a trump card; a pulley that he had made in order to prevent his collection to be defiled, which he pulled as the room began to crumble. As Lupin and the others tried to escape, Fujiko discovered that Hafner's collection of rare jewels (which is the reason why she married him in the first place and were to believe to be a lie) are actually the engagement rings that Hafner gave to his wives and attempted to get all of them, only for Lupin to stop her as the room crumbled and Hafner's corpse would remain with his wives (and leaving Fujiko with only one of them on her finger.)
Personality[]
Unknown to the world, underneath his suave personality, William Hafner had a strange habit of marrying young women and killing them, so that he can perverse their youthful appearance before they reach a certain age where they would get winkles or cellulites on their bodies. He also shown to have a love of enjoying killing his wives and shown to be upset when someone else kills his bride before he could. He also had this thing where he never kills men but rather have someone else kill them for him. He also shown to love his wives, which would result in destroying the room to prevent anyone else taking them from him.
Trivia[]
- William Hafner's name is an obvious parody of the late Hugh Hefner, the founder of the Playboy magazine.
- His character also has a reference of him having numerous women living in the manor, with the only difference being Hafner killed his brides in order to have them maintain their youth and never age.
- Hafner's trait of killing his wives to preserve their youth and beauty in a secret room could be inspired by the folklore Bluebeard, who was known to marry young women and then kill them and put them a forbidden room.
