William Johns, most commonly known as just Johns, is the secondary antagonist of the 2000 film Pitch Black.
He is a bounty hunter who sought to capture the notorious fugitive Richard B. Riddick, thus becoming one of his sworn adversaries in general.
The character was portrayed by Cole Hauser, who also played Carter Verone in 2 Fast 2 Furious and Steve Curtis in ER respectively.
Biography[]
A mercenary posing as a cop onboard a civilian transport ship, Johns was on his way to turn in Riddick, one of the most wanted men in the cosmos. However, a rogue comet caused the ship to crash on planet M6-117, and thus began a brutal trial to escape for the survivors as the world was dominated by the ultra hostile Bioraptors. While amicable on the outside and generally taking it upon himself to protect the non-combatant civilians of the group, Johns was ultimately only out for himself, and was more than willing to have a innocent teenage girl killed if it meant increasing his chances of survival. This malicious act, replicating a similar one he committed in the past, is what spelled his doom, as in a brief standoff, Riddick badly wounded him and the Bioraptors ate him shortly after.
Personality[]
Johns comes off as a composed, rational and leaderlike man. A life of military style service and training has given him high discipline and skills that he employs to great effect in his field of work. While he may appear caring and even protective of innocents, Johns is willing to do virtually anything to get his job done, if that means playing protector he will, but is also capable of extreme cruelty if it means accomplishing his goals. This was demonstrated when he murdered an innocent child just to capture Riddick, and was once again willing to have a innocent girl killed in order to better his odds of escaping M6-117 alive.
When he was discharged from service his record was clean and it was a amicable release, however some obsessive compulsive traits were noted. Due to a violent encounter with Riddick, a piece of a blade was forced to be left inside his body during the surgery, causing him to become a morphine addict in order to control the pain.
Powers and Abilities[]
Having received military grade training from an early age, Johns is well versed in both armed and unarmed combat, able to both use all manners of weapons as well as melee combat to notable effect. He is in near peak physical performance, and is a capable and thoughtful leader when the situation calls for it. He has a major weakness however, as without morphine he is in constant pain due to the broken shiv that remains lodged in his body.
