William Kenzie

William Kenzie is supporting antagonist in the 2022 superhero crime film The Batman and a minor antagonist in its 2024 spin-off miniseries The Penguin. He is a corrupt detective of the Gotham City Police Department Narcotics division who secretly works for Carmine Falcone.

He was portrayed by Peter McDonald.

Biography[]

Background[]

While working as a detective for the GCPD, Kenzie was one of many corrupt officers who worked for the Falcone Crime Family. He partook along with many figures in the city in taking down Salvatore Maroni, in order to bring Falcone into power, and exploited Thomas Wayne's renewal plan to keep Falcone as the true mayor of the city.

He was also the officer who, under Carmine Falcone's order, arrested Sofia, Falcone's own daughter, for the murders of 7 women that Carmine killed.

The Batman[]

After the death of Don Mitchell, Jr. the Batman sought out to solve the mystery and found clues that led him to Oswald "Oz" Cobb, also known as the Penguin. As he ambushed the Iceberg Lounge, fighting with the Penguin's goons, Kenzie encountered him, pointing a pistol telling him to surrender, however, Batman threw a baseball bat towards Kenzie's face breaking his nose.

After his altercation with the Batman, Falcone ordered him to find the late mayor's mistress, Annika Kosolov and kidnap her, as she knew the truth about Falcone's role as the informant in the Salvatore Maroni case. Kenzie broke into Selina Kyle's home where Annika was staying, took her phone and kidnapped Annika, bringing her before Falcone, where she was ultimately strangled by him. However Annika managed to record the altercation on Selina's voicemail by calling her phone.

Following Gil Colson's death, the Batman was taken into custody and Kenzie entered the room questioning what was going on. As he saw the vigilante, they both recognized each other, with Batman asking Jim Gordon about William's true identity, with the former naming Kenzie as a narcotics officer, while Batman speculated that the Penguin was the rat who had Maroni arrested and that William was working for him.

Later, Kenzie is seen with Oz making a drop deal at the Gotham Docks, when they were unexpectedly ambushed by Batman, Selina Kyle, and Jim Gordon. Kenzie was ordered to give the deal's money to the Penguin, however, when Batman revved up his Batmobile and pursued Penguin in a chase, Kenzie was left alone, as Selina took the money bag from his possession.

Once Selina found out about Kenzie taking her phone, and being involved in Annika Kosolov's murder, she kidnapped him and held him hostage atop an abandoned skyscraper. Batman and Jim Gordon arrived shortly after and confronted Selina and Kenzie, as she proved through Annika's voice message that Falcone was the 'rat' and that he killed her. Batman questioned Kenzie about Falcone's role in the Maroni case, where Kenzie revealed how Carmine is the true mayor of Gotham City, and how everyone works for him in secret, all through the help of Thomas Wayne's renewal project being used as a coverup for money laundering. Angered by her friend's death, Selina pushed Kenzie off the skyscraper ledge, but Batman and Gordon managed to save him from the fall and take him into custody. Kenzie was later incarcerated for his actions, after his role in the Maroni case and Kosolov's death was revealed to the entirety of Gotham City through Jim Gordon leaking Kosolov's audio message to a news station.

Personality[]

Kenzie is a greedy individual who's only real concern is money and being willing to do any dirty jobs he had to in order to ensure that he got paid including kidnapping. However, he did appear to have some morals as he was visibly unnerved by the Annika Kosolov's screams as she was being strangled to death by his employer perhaps having believed himself that the man had just wanted to talk to her and, after seeing that things were no longer in Falcone's favor, he willingly told Batman and Lt Gordon the truth about the Renewal Fund and Falcone's involvement.
