William Sutherland is a major antagonist in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. He is a Natural who's an officer of the Earth Alliance general staff, stationed at the Alliance's JOSH-A headquarters. He's also a member of Blue Cosmos and answers to his boss Muruta Azrael.
History
First Alliance-PLANT War
After the Archangel arrives in Alaska, Sutherland subjects its officers to an inquiry. Sutherland's comments in the course of this hearing, which reveal own prejudice against Coordinators, provide a hint as to his real agenda to eliminate all Coordinators.
Operation Spitbreak
At the Battle of JOSH-A, Sutherland is one of the two OMNI officers (later that other OMNI officer gets killed by GENESIS) who triggers the Cyclops System in an attempt to get rid of OMNI's less desirable forces, the moderate Eurasian Federation, the Atlantic Federation's Archangel ship (for having Kira Yamato, a Coordinator, as one of her members), and a large portion of ZAFT's fighting strength.
Battle of Boaz
He is also involved in the Battle of Boaz, where he deploys the Peacemaker Team, a team of Moebius mobile armors armed with nuclear missiles to use against the ZAFT base Boaz.
Later, the Peacemaker Team would attempt to destroy the PLANTs, only for the attack to be halted by the Three Ships Alliance.
Second Battle of Jachin Due
In the Second Battle of Jachin Due, Sutherland as an Admiral commands a Agamemnon-class ship, the Doolittle, which also held the Peacemaker Team. They would make another attempt at the Coordinator's homeland.
Demise
He ultimately dies when his ship, the Doolittle is destroyed by the combined efforts of Yzak Joule and Dearka Elsman at the Battle of Jachin Due.

Trivia
- He is in many ways analogous to Bask Om from the Universal Century, as both were the second in command to their respective corrupt Terran leaders.
